    Little Mermaid

I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed that the artist's design doesn't match the actual vinyl on this one...

On the card the design shows that the vinyl's arm is supposed to be colored as if it is Ariel's arm... but on the actual figure the arm is just blank! Are there other vinyls with coloring differences from design to figure like this one?

I they it's a poor design either way. Not as disappointing and misleading as others though. namely Haunted Mansion and Pinball.

I think the Artists should actually try to put their designs on the vinyls when coming up with the designs so they can see if it works or how it will be tweaked. If you look at Mine or the Castle ones, they both had changes made to them as well. Mine the bird was to be on the arm and face, he isn't anywhere on the arm. The castle is supposed to fill the face, it doesn't and just comes out with the top looking like it is coming out of the clouds.

I think that they could have made this work by making it look like she is swiming through the vinyl. But in the actual design, where is her back and arm? Could have worked but didn't.

Yeah I was very disapointed to hear that the artists don't actually plan anything on the vinyl figure

It's definitely common to notice differences between the artist drawings on the cards and the actual figures. We discussed this a LOT on the other forum. Some, the differences can be overlooked. Others, it's just too depressing NOT to notice.

I think differences are probably inevitable. It's one thing to design on a 2-dimensional template, but when you execute the design, it may not work exactly the way you plan. I'd rather see the original design and compare it to how it worked in the end.

I do agree, this is a pretty weak design though.

    Very weak design...worst one, IMO.

You'd think with computer programs being the way that they are these days, they'd be able to come up with a 3D digital design template for the artists to work on in addition to traditional methods.

EH, you hate it for them but you can't be an artist if you can't take criticism. Even if Mermaid was an amazing figure they'd still be someone to hate on it, you know?

Not sure who reads the forum and who doesn't, but I was told "Some of those forum members are harsh." by one of the artists. He went on to say that a few of the artists were a little upset to read comments, but that he understood there would be criticism from time to time.

He's right though, that's just the nature of having something that lots of people see. Can't please everyone.

I agree, some of the comments can be harsh. While each artist has a vision, sometimes it doesn't translate as well as what they probably hoped it would be. When we discuss the concepts and how they turned out as an actual vinyl, we should be giving them constructive feedback, not just saying it sucks. Think of it as how would you want someone to give you feedback on your work.

Just like you said good designs can be conceived and executed. I know the artist can please us all, but if you design it one way, make it look one way. It's like a bait and switch.

Well, as I think we have started to notice, they stopped the bait and switch as we have not seen any more preview posters beyond Urban/Park 2 and the Holiday series. We are now only seeing the preview pieces. Now will they still release posters with Park/Urban 3?? Don't know !!

It all goes back to the artists. They need to be able to try designing their ideas on the actual vinyls, not just adobe photoshop (or whatever it was they use).

For Urban 2, I actually like the changes that have occurred to the square block one and the chinese writing ones. Their original designs were good, but I like the way they are actually coming out a bit better. But then, that is me.

I didn't realize this. FOTLK and Snow White are my 2 favorites of park #2 and two of my top favorites overall. I'm glad you posted this. I feel a lot better about this artist now...let's just say I'm not a fan of the LM fig.

Is it just me, or does it seem like there's
almost always a problem with a design on a 3"
that wraps around the arm of the figure?

P.S. Another figure that looks very different from
the original design is Fireworks from park series #1
