New Pixar Movie - Dia de los Muertos - Coming in 2015

OMG I could not be more excited about this announcement!

Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich is one of the foremost experts on The Shining, so his bona fides as an aficionado of the sinister and mysterious are without question.

What remains in question, however, is how this will shape his newly announced project for Pixar, a 2015 film set around the Mexican holiday honoring the dead, tentatively titled Dia de los Muertos.

Colorful painted skulls (like the kind pictured here) are a hallmark of that celebration, and featured prominently in the title art Disney animation chief John Lasseter presented while announcing the film Tuesday. But it’s unknown whether those will remain just decoration, or perhaps turn out to be the characters themselves.

No other details were released about that project, except that it was an original story not based on any previous source material.

Well this is exactly what I was going to say!!! I don't have any Mexican heritage, but I am obsessed with collecting Dia de los Muertos pieces. My sister got me an awesome custom painted sugar skull from New Orleans and it's one of my favorite things I own. Now I have to work on getting the 9/3" set!!!

I think I'm in the minority with this but I loved Coraline, and I hope it's kind of like that animation-wise. I think it'd be cool if the plot was like some kids daydreaming when they're at a family celebration (located in Mexico) for Dia de los Muertos and maybe a family member is telling stories or they're remembering deceased ancestors and the kid(s) go through an adventure discovering their past family with some sort of situation they have to fix or figure out maybe FOR the family member, but in the end it's about the importance about family, heritage or something. Well, that's MY imagination! :P

    Collecting since September 2010

Hmm, I really hope they handle this very respectfully and avoid cultural appropriation issues. It could be very beautifully done but it kind of makes me wary a bit. Hopefully Brave inspires them to have more female leads.

seems like an awesome idea. i like the aesthetic of day of the dead, and i'm sure pixar will do a beautiful job. i hope that they do a good job of being sensitive to the culture as well.

Lindsay, you are not alone about Coraline! While it wasn't my favorite of the creepy animated features, I still loved it! I, too, have no Mexican heritage, but I love Day of the Dead stuff. Your custom skull is SO cool! I'm ashamed to say I still haven't acquired the Day of the Dead 3" - one day soon, one day. At least I have my Trade City 9/3 combo to keep me happy for now!
