    SotMK - Rules/Strategy?

I'm glad to see a forum area created for SotMK! I haven't had a chance to play yet but I'm extremely interested in the game and look forward to trying it out in May.

One of the designers was on a podcast recently talking about the game, and they said that they are not officially releasing the rules on how the game works on the harder difficultly levels, they want people to figure that out. He did hint that the word next to the numbers on the card will determine how effective a card is on a certain villain, I imagine he was talking about the description like "Wishful Attack", "Charming Attack", etc.

All I've heard of so far is that I belive you can you two cards at the same time, and if you put two cards together from the same movie or same universe then they will be more powerful. And that using the same card multiple times will make it more powerful.

Has anyone else figured out more than that? What the difference is between Wishful, Charming, etc? How the Attack/Boost/Shield values all work together?

My wife and I spent all week playing (highly addictive). A cast member told us that on Medium and Hard you definitely have to play with strategy. He said to listen to the villain's taunt before s/he attacks to decide which card to play. I only got to do a few Main Street missions on medium before leaving but it seemed to be a sound strategy. My villain kept talking about "magic" and when I used a Buzz/Woody combo I didn't get any reaction. At the next portal I used the Blue Fairy (a wishful attack) and beat the guy.

However, I've also read that on medium at least it's just as effective to play the same villain 2-3 times in a row and you'll still automatically win. You just win faster if you play with some strategy.

It is simple but highly addictive. We got home Friday and are already talking about driving up for a day sometime later this month before our seasonal passes blackout around Easter....literally just to play SotMK. Crazy. My wife has never played or had a bit of interest in any card game like this before and she is as excited about going back up for a day just to do the portals as I am.

Do the portals AND collect 5 more cards of course!

Ok I don't know why post was deleted but whatever. What I said was that this game seems to be kind of like a pokemon type where only certain moves, or in this case spells, are effective on certain opponents. I imagine that like pokemon the more you play and the more you get familar with the generl idea it will become easy. I'm excited to try this when I go in August

Are there going to be game rules to play the game (like pokemon or yugiho) outside of the park? I think it would make
a really cool addition to Disney. There could be tournaments etc etc etc....... I think it would be cool if when you were at
the parks there could be ultimate prizes you could earn.

We had trouble at the Train Station Main Floor portal......anyone else?

I had no trouble with it, but played that location only once so far and it was during testing. Did have trouble at one outside Uptown Jewelers though. I imagine they're like anything else there--subject to breakdown at any time.

I'd not thought of that until Return_of_Phos brought it up at a recent trade night, but I'm on his side on that issue - I actually like that it's strictly you versus Hades' team of villains. Inviting a person-to-person format also invites the negative aspects of competition: bragging, sore losing, poor winning, and overall bad feelings. Seeing as Disney isn't about making anyone feel down, I think it would be a mistake to create or encourage any direct "player versus player" competition.

I could get on board with a specific prize, though - when I finish the game on hard, I want all ten lightning bolt cards as a reward. Make it happen, Disney!

The portals aren't exactly errorproof. The fire portal at Adventure Land wasn't reading cards last week. A CM rebooted it and it was just fine. Yesterday, the dragonfly at Frontier Land wasn't displaying any video for a while. The eye at Liberty Square didn't read some cards, but a quit t-shirt wipe of the windows fixed that.

those portals can be quite finicky, sometimes it's seems like just the lighting or the way you hold up the cards changes how it will react....especially when I try to use two different cards at the same time, sometimes they both show up and sometimes only one does...don't know why....

I found that the day I wore a solid black shirt - all of my cards worked beautifully! I wouldn't recommend wearing black in the hot summer... but it makes sense to wear a solid colored shirt so it's easier to read the cards. I'm curious how it's working for people who use the binders?

I also had trouble the last time I played at the Train Station. It didn't read any of my cards - boo!

One small trick that did help: place the binder/cards right in front of a camera and move away slowly. This allows the camera to focus before the spell window runs out. I had trouble at the Train Station too. And at the Fire Portal I've had trouble multiple times. It looks like they added a third camera there, but it only helped a little bit.

As for the binders, they work very well. I normally only play two card combos so I cover the two above or below the ones that I'm playing. I use a four card binder. If the portal is acting up, I'll flash four or eight cards. And for the sorcerer's crest I have the first page of my binder reserved for that.

I heard that toys are good against Cruella and Jafar, is this true or just rumor?

I've been told the same, at least as far as Cruella is concerned, but I've never noticed anything different. Maybe I need to have multiple Toy spells in the same combo as opposed to one (Buzz) paired with other types?

I do sort of wish the spell cues would be easier to decipher (or at least that we'd know which types of spells the enemies use in order to counter - you know, like rock crushes lizard, lizard poisons Spock, etc).
