WDW FASTPASS System Updates, New Ride Reservation System in the Works

First off, this thread will NOT get out of hand like the other one. This is for information only, not to attack others. If this gets out of hand, posts will be deleted and warnings and/or infractions will be sent out. Thanks in advance for your cooperation, everyone.

One-hour FASTPASS return time window now enforced at Walt Disney World, leading to new ride reservation system

Today Walt Disney World theme parks have begun actively enforcing a rule that was often bent since the debut of the FASTPASS system in 1999. Return times listed on FASTPASS tickets are now strictly enforced, no longer allowing theme park guests to use a FASTPASS at their leisure.

But as of today, Walt Disney World is now enforcing both the beginning and end times, allowing guests holding a FASTPASS to only return during the one-hour window stated on the FASTPASS slip. It may sound like an undesirable change that will further limit flexibility in a busy theme park schedule, but it’s not actually a new rule. Though the return time window has often been ignored, the basis of the FASTPASS system lies within this return window. It’s simply now Walt Disney World’s decision to finally start enforcing the rule that’s been there since the beginning. And though it will affect regulars who know how to use the FASTPASS leniency to their advantage, most Walt Disney World guests already do return during the designated time window and likely won’t notice much of a difference.

There will always be, of course, exceptions to the rule. If an attraction becomes temporarily closed or guests are somehow otherwise prevented from visiting an attraction due to circumstances out of their control, Cast Members stationed at FASTPASS return areas will surely continue Disney’s long-standing tradition of doing whatever they can to make guests happy. But it does mean guests will need to pay closer attention to posted return times when grabbing a FASTPASS in the first place, as to not overlap times with dining reservations, parades, or anything else that might draw attention away from the desired attraction.

To make the change clear to theme park regulars who are used to disregarding the second time printed on a FASTPASS, Disney has added signs to FASTPASS machines property-wide, like this one:

The daily time and information guide that accompanies theme park maps also has added a note that reads:

“To ensure you have the best experience possible, please remember to return to FASTPASS attractions within your return time window (printed on FASTPASS tickets).”

FASTPASS tickets also now include the phrase, “Not able to accommodate late arrivals.”

Walt Disney World is certainly making it clear to all visitors that the former lax treatment of FASTPASS rules is no longer available and that all guests will need to strictly adhere to the FASTPASS rules. But why the sudden change of attitude?

Just over a year ago, in February 2011 at a Disney investors conference, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs confirmed Disney is working on a system from which those planning a trip to Walt Disney World will be able to make ride reservations from outside the parks, even from home before the trip begins.

Staggs said, “…we are currently developing an innovative system that will, in essence, create a version of FASTPASS for their entire Disney vacations. Now we define the guest experience as beginning from the time a potential guest sits down at a computer or picks up a phone to make a reservation. [...] They’ll be able to create a personalized itinerary that gives them the exact Disney vacation they want.”

Though that revelation was met with mixed reactions from Disney theme park fans, it’s likely that the new FASTPASS rule enforcement is directly related to the yet-to-be-revealed ride reservation system, rumored to be dubbed “X-Pass” or “xPass” (or a variety of other names). With Disney planning to add a more advanced ride reservation ability, the current FASTPASS system must be completely under their control, knowing exactly when and how many guests will be returning, expecting to “skip” the line.

The change is likely to cause some frustration among those who have grown used to the convenience of using a FASTPASS any time later in the day, but ultimately just as FASTPASS was a revolutionary addition to the parks in the late ’90s, the new “xPass” system (or whatever it might be called) is being designed to revolutionize, enhance, and minimize the act of mindlessly waiting in line, allowing for more entertainment and enjoyment out of a Disney theme park visit.

I'll admit it. At DL I am one of those that will get the FP but return way later that day but that was how I am able to make the most of my time. Especially like at CA. At the start of the day the fammily would start out at Soarin while i walked down to California Screamin and FP it. It would be well into the day before we got down there but with that ride and Toy Story Mania, it helped. No biggie though, I'll just adapt.

I never abused the system but I'm also someone who was guilty of returning at any time (though that usually never ever happened). I think it's really really dumb what Disney is planning to do with this "xpass" or whatever, it really makes no sense at all. There are many guests (i hate that word so I cringe every time I have to say it) have no diea what they are doing from day to day on their vacation beyond a few days in advance. My family plans out each day and each dining reservation months and months in advance but our plans usually always change. I think this is just a dumb idea because let say, for arguments sake, that I make plans to go to MK next Saturday and did it especially because I can make reservations at Tony's which have my reservations at 6pm (but really wanted to go to Studios because it's the only day Fantasmic is playing). There were other days I could have made these reservations but it's the only day that my friends can make it from Tampa and we're all very very excited to ride Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain (though these friends also said they would have seen Fantasmic but would rather ride both mountains also instead of riding coaster, tower and star tours which I could've also gotten xpasses for). Now as you all know, both Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain are outside rides and are weather permitting. Let's now say that I got fast passes for 2pm and 4pm respectively and it's a whole day thunderstorm that's lightening and thundering all day and therefore both rides are closed and we all know that the 3 afmore mentioned Studios rides are indoors and are not affected by weather (and also how screwy the weather is in florida) and the rain and stuff does not stop until 2am the next morning. What happens now? Now my plans are all messed up and got screwed out on riding 2 rides that I wanted to ride with friends, who btw, are only able to make it to WDW that one day. Instead of riding the 3 studios rides and possibly seeing Fantasmic, I'm now stuck with fast passes I never got to use and my day was a complete, ahem, washout. What will Disney do about that I wonder? We all know that no matter what (except for some very very very rare cases which I've actually never heard of happening) the fastpasses are only valid on the same day they are printed. I know this may seem very confusing but I'm just trying to get at the fact that you can't plan for your day to day adventures, let alone the weather so many months in advance. I can see it now, there will be millions of people complaining if and when (cause I can bet my life it will) this happens. Disney "is headed into some mighty tough territory", to quote John Wayne in The Great Movie Ride. I'm curious to see how Disney plans for the biggest variable of all.... the weather. On a whole other note but kind of the same concept..... what about ride break downs for the entire day? Not just for 2 or 3 hours which occur during your return time but down from let's say 1pm-park closing when your "xpass" is from 3pm-4pm? What happens then? Are we allowed to use it next day? What about my friends that came to MK thast one day? It's an interesting concept no doubt but I don't think it will work

You have to consider if you are going to utilize the xpass system is that there will be a possibility of variables. I'm sure as we get more info on the new system things will become more clear on how Disney will handle these situations you have brought up. More than likely it will be some sort of disclaimer stating that they can't gautantee that the xpass experience may not work out as planned and if so they will attempt to make your vacation experience a magical as possible.

Since we really have no confirmed details on how the xpass will work, I think we should wait for some real info before we judge if it is bad or good.

i'm not really a fan of a reservation system for resort guests, mainly because at dlr i never stay at the resort hotels.

um you do realize that if it's is lightning and storming all day at WDW then Fantasmic would be canceled since its outside right?

Disney has said that they will still honor late passes if the ride is closed during a guest return window time frame. Now for the rare occurrence that a ride is shut down and a guest is unable to use their fastpass or xpass for that day for a particular ride. Disney could give that guest anytime/anyway fastpass or the guest is S.O.L,

Yes of course I realize it but just because it's bad weather at one park doesn't mean it will be the same at another.

I know I just had to give you a lil hell about it that's all

Now of course we don't know the full details yet about XPass but I would assume like any reservations you can cancel or modify the reservations for a ride due to reasons like a change in vacation plans or weather. We know Disney cannot control the weather......yet.

I just got Back form WDW and they were very strict about the One hour window. I was 5 mins early and they made me wait, So it's no joke. They also started Testing a New fast Pass system with Cards and RFID tech. They randomly selected people on may 1st to try it out, we didn't get picked

That's always been the case but they haven't enforced the ending time. My dad told me that recently some people were randomly chosen from Magical Express to try out the new system with some sort of computer ship that you swipe by a reader? I didn't understand it exactly

Yeah when we were checking in with the Magical Express we saw a family talking to a guy with a iPad, and then in the park we saw people with the Cards.

    This is all very interesting!

The way the xpass sounds, I see myself using it very infrequently. At least the way it sounds right now anyway. Perhaps for the crazy-line rides like Midway Mania, I could see myself planning around it. But for the most part, I find it hard to even plan out dining reservations months in advance, because we never know what we will want to be doing or where we will want to be on a particular day. We just really like to be flexible pretty much all the time. Especially with my young nephew now going with us on all trips, we find our schedule never being what we may have thought, or planned it to be...

I also wonder how it will work in terms of leaving enough time in-between reservations, or how many reservations you will be allowed to make, etc... Right now it just sounds a little to "binding" to me, to be enjoyable or something I will utilize all that much. But for sure I could see it coming in handy for a ride here and there. Just not planning out many, where I ride when, months in advance. However, like with a lot of things, I will probably enjoy it and use it more than I think I will, lol!

As for the fast pass changes, I really don't see it effecting my enjoyment of the system, personally. I have always gone during the specified hour on the ticket.

I heard they may be doing away with Fastpass all together. Could that be possible so soon after implementing a new system?
