Has anyone had the chance to go up on the hot air balloon in DTD? When we were down there in September/October every time we tried to go on it was down due to weather. Is there certain times of the year that are best to try to get a ride?

I went last March and we went to DTD twice before and the balloon was down due to weather but we happened to very late at night and caught the last trip up! The weather was going to be bad because a storm was coming in but they let us go up, and it was just me and my 4 friends. I don't know how many people are allowed on at a time usually. It was definitely an experience I would A) recommend and B) do again if given the chance.
I don't really understand why they put that "ride" at DTD, bc when I go to DTD it's not my first thought to go on a ride let alone a hot air balloon "ride" that I'm not sure is worth it or not (if I hadn't gone on it already), but when you're up there it is just such a beautiful sight. I went at night and I LOVE seeing all the lights of DTD and the surrounding resorts. I've been up to the roof of DisneyQuest at DTD and I love that view and it reminded me of that, or when you're going up the incline of Everest and you can see parts of Kali River Rapids, DHS and Space Mountain: just something that everyone needs to see at least once. I did find it a little "scary" because of even light winds, and also at the time I didn't even fly because I was too afraid of flying but you get used to it when you're up there for a while and it did seem we were up there for a bit but I don't know for how long. (Sorry, post-Jellyrolls) I think the only thing negative is that it is extremely frustrating to go by multiple times and it be down because of weather. Of course that's something they can't change, but it's just disappointing that's all. I also like seeing it in the sky when you're driving the roads around WDW.
There's a narrow walkway all around in a circle and a railing. If you were with a romantic pal, if you're only with one or two other couples you could still feel "alone" and romantic:

the balloon is one of my last destinations in DTD, when im there im there to PARTY! lol but i have always wanted to go up... it looks like fun, how much it cost again?

I went up in the balloon in Oct of '09 (tried back in May of this year but it was closed because of the wind) and it was well worth the ride up. It was pretty early in the morning during the week and it was just us and an elderly couple. We were lucky in that we got to go up the full 400ft (the wind determines how high you can go). I think the ride in total was about ten minutes. I remember it being very smooth on the way up but a tad bit scary on the way down as the wind grabbed us and one point and blew the balloon out a bit.

I really want to go up at night though. Especially during the Holiday Season if possible.
Cool. My wife and I are always on the fence about the balloon. I think these positive reviews will entice is up into the air in March - when next we hit the World.
Huh, its not as expensive as I had figured. Those pictures remind me of the view at the top of Expedition Everest-I wish the ride would stop for a few minutes during the ascent so you could survey the WDW property.

My son begged to go in it last time we were there but we didn't have enough time. i think we'll make an exception this year. hopefully we'll do it at night.

I went up in the Balloon in May 2010. It's a blast! I was so scared at first but once you see all the landmarks you feel at ease.
I've never actually wanted to do it. It sounds neat and i'm sure the view is great and i'm not afriad of heights..but i'm stingy...I just don't want to pay like $20 for a 10min ride in a balloon...could do better things with the money..like buy another disney souvenir lol.
