While I don't usually watch these type of Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies, I might be inclined to see this one, simply because it's Andrew Stanton directing. The computer graphics also look pretty awesome.
Anyone planning on seeing this?

I am usually into sci-fi/fantasy, but the trailer didn't really grab my attention.
I'd argue that Tron Legacy is better than any of the last three Pirates films. The Muppets was also excellent.
As for John Carter (which is not as good of a title as John Carter of Mars), I enjoyed Burroughs' A Princess of Mars, and the idea of Stanton doing live action has me interested. Even if the movie gets great reviews, I don't think audiences are going to flock to this.

Never heard of it before, but the trailer did grab my attention! However, doesn't look like anything I'm really ever interested in... With the aliens and kind of strange storyline. But, I might go see it! Guess it just depends on what other movies come out that weekend haha... I do have to say I'm glad to see Taylor Kitsch in a leading role, though, I'm a fan of his.
I'd agree that I don't think non-Disney fan audiences will see this en masse.
I've seen this trailer quite few times. At first I thought this looked pretty dumb, but each time I see the trailer it looks better and better.

My son and I went to a D23 screening of John Carter tonight and it was amazing. It took a little while to get into it but it was necessary to understand the story. I will be going to see this again this weekend on an IMAX screen.
It comes out this Friday here, but due to covering a co workers vacation I won't get to the cinema until next Friday to see it, hubby is looking forward to it, I'm not so sure it's my kinda film but I'm hoping I'll enjoy it.
At first I thought this movie seemed kind of generic and uninspiring based on the commercials, but then I learned that it was written and directed by Andrew Stanton (Wall-E, Finding Nemo). I'm interested in seeing it now, but I'll probably wait for it to come out on DVD. It's based on a series of novels that were published in the early 1900's.

I went to see it yesterday. The movie itself is better than the trailers and definitely worth the trip - I enjoyed it.
Left Disneyland on January 9th - don't know when we will get there again

I actually don't think the trailer looks terrible and I'm not that into sci-fi flicks. I want to see this based upon partly the good reviews by members on here and partly just bc there's a VM collection coming out and I need to know if one day I'll want this series or if I should invest now.![]()
Not getting good reviews from critics but sometimes they will bash something I end up loving so I will have to wait. Seems the movie is better if you had read the books beforehand which I have not.

It's a pretty good movie that critics were bound to bash. Honestly, a lot of their reviews seem written by people who didn't bother to do even the slightest bit of research on the character or have no clue about Burroughs (in other words, film critics).
The most annoying part of the critiques is the complaint that the film makes Burroughs into a character. Burroughs made himself into a character! It's how he wrote the book! If you don't like it, fine, but you can't bash a movie for actually staying true to the source material.![]()
I have been hearing that a lot so i was thinking maybe I should read the book if planning on watching. Some critics just bash to try to get some snarky humor that just comes off snobbish. I am in search of specific critics for certain genres as well because somebody who loves romance movies but is a critic why would I take their opinion in an action or sci-fi movie or vice-versa.
It looks like a combination of several different video games. Someone let us know how it is

I liked it a lot, and although I think it was mentioned in another thread, I recall Silvered and lintman also enjoying it.
The critics really aren't giving it a fair shake. Yes, there are species names and battles that are at first confusing (which they would be, as we're, you know, on Mars), but it all comes together rather fluidly, and I found my way rather quickly in differentiating who was who.
Avatar is pretty much a blatant rip-off of this story, and had John Carter come out first, I think it would have earned that much more praise; it has the luxury of being a fleshed out, intricate story, whereas Avatar was pretty much a plodding rehash with nothing going for it but scenery (full disclosure - I never liked Avatar).
Although it doesn't stand much chance of reaching that height, I think the tone of John Carter is more akin to Star Wars - the exposition is done (mostly) organically, and there are bits of humor that arise to keep the attitude light. Two thumbs up.![]()

I said this in another thread but:
I really enjoyed parts of it, I feel like it had so much potential to be a great epic movie but it ended up just being fun. I really liked the main characters and the creature effects were great. The villain and landscapes were pretty lame and uninteresting in my opinion. It could have been better but it kind reminded me of those scifi adventure movies like Starship Troopers and Waterworld that I used to watch late at night on tv as a kid and loved so much. I feel like the critics were pretty much fair and I can't really recommend it but I still wouldn't mind seeing some sequels.
Personally, if you have to do research on a movie before seeing said movie, then I have to say the movie probably isn't worth seeing. I certainly don't want to have to do homework before I see a film. That being said I didn't enjoy this film at all, the guy who plays John Carter is your typical model-turned-actor and reminds us of this fact through out his performance in the film though I did not mind him being shirtless for most of the film. The special effects are incredible and if you like well done graphics and CGI then John Carter is for you, of course only if you don't mind getting lost at certain points throughout the film and having to try and find your way back. Anyway it was a stinker in my book, I can't be entertained if I don't understand what the hades is going on.
