FYI, seal a vinyl, THEN put on rhinestones, else you'll loose the sparkle. Learned that lesson this morning....![]()
I've been working on my first custom and I have two questions...
First, does the spray sealer help reduce or flatten out visible brush strokes?
Also, I've had to mix custom colors for the one I'm working on. The only problem is I end up with more than I need for one coat, and the paint dries in the palette while I wait for the paint on the vinyl to dry. So it becomes pretty wasteful, and while I do have a formula (for example one drop green to 4 drops yellow), the shade can sometimes vary a bit between applications. I wonder if there is a way to mix custom colors and prevent it from drying between coats. (I've been using Golden Fluid Acrylics)
maybe you can put saran wrap over it we used to do it in one of my painting classes and it worked pretty well

I use Apple Barrel acrylics and did a similar 1:4 drop ratio for a color... i just took a older paint bottle, cleaned it out and then did two or three batches in it. Shook it up and then was able to use it for multiple coats/areas over a few days. Saved me from remixing and kept in a consistant color.
Thanks, I'll give that a try! I had tried saran wrap but it ended up either sticking to the paint or being too loose and letting the paint try.
You could also try a "wet pallet", where you mix the paint on a wet paper towel or foam in sealed container. There's a good tutorial here.

Try washing the vinyl with soap and water first and let it dry. Often on CYOs and some other vinyls that aren't entirely painted, there is still some mold release, which is a lubricant for releasing the figure from the mold at the factory. It may mess up the way your paint adheres to the figure, but a good thorough washing is always a good idea.
I had a question about sealers. I used a matte sealer from Krylon and I was surprised to see that it had a pretty significant level of shine to it. It seemed more like a satin finish than anything else and was definitely more light reflective than actual Disney vinylmations (like any of the Furry Friends for example). Does anyone know if other matte sealers have a duller finish than others?
I like Design Master matte and the Testors RTW mentioned earlier in the thread.

This is amazing. The talent you have is so cool. If I was able to paint I would so be making customs lol. Good job!
