The local Sports Authority didn't have anything, but a bike shop might. This one came from an online supplier; I'll have to look up the URL.

It's definitely cheaper, though, than buying an outright stationary bike.

Not in a park necessarily, but facing a park might have been nice. As it is, you're running toward the parking lot and more road. Of course, I didn't like the Wine and Dine finish line last year either, so maybe I'm just a picky person when it comes to finish lines.

Aw, I liked the W&D finish last year! Although I was comparing it to the year before and anything was an improvement over that. I agree, though, facing a park would have been nice. To be fair, I'll be too worried about not dying during those last few tenths of a mile that I really won't be focusing on anything other than that giant finish line banner!

I ran the W&D and thought the finish line was a bit chaotic. I didn't mind the WDW Half finish line this past January, as it was nice to have open space to walk it off. I'm running the WDW full marathon this January and am pretty nervous!

Yeah, I failed to take into account that at the end of a marathon, I imagine most folks don't really spend much time taking in their surroundings. At the end of a half marathon, I'm rarely totally wiped out, so I do look around.

Well, you've found a pretty encouraging group! Personally, I kind of like the nerves before a race. They get me going.

Oh, and for lianaishere and anyone else, I can not yet recommend the stationary bike conversion that I got (it came from a wholesaler on Amazon). I opened it up to install the bike, and the frame isn't level. Returning it and hoping the new one will be better.

I totally know how you feel! I ran my first full marathon two months ago and was definitely a bit nervous leading up to it (I'm assuming this is your first full?) However, if you train properly and get those miles in, there's really no reason to be TOO nervous as you know you can do it! Like Phylers said, though, I kind of like the nerves before a race. They give me extra adrenaline the morning of and get me going better! Good luck to you, and I hope you stick around here and keep us up to date with your training journey!

Thanks for the support guys! Yes, it is my first full marathon. I'm planning on doing the Galloway training schedule starting in July. I'm not focused on time, just completing the race, so the Galloway program for beginners should be an awesome way to get ready. I do love the nerves too! Especially the morning of, when I wake up and get suited up.

Just a heads up... the Goofy Challenge is up to 63% full now. I ran 8.75 this afternoon w/ 80 degree temps and it felt more like 95 degrees! I don't know how you florida peeps do it.

If you can't go after the sun has gone down or before it comes up/just after dawn, you can kiss your time goodbye. Personally, about this time of year, I won't even consider running outdoors between about 8am and 9pm.

As a night owl, I'm more on the late end of the scale. The upside is that I enjoy seeing the odd owl or family of raccoons while I'm out. The downside is that I was once stopped by a police officer when a home in a nearby development had just been robbed by "a white guy in a hat." He checked my address and whatnot (noting that I had on a headband and no hat), but I'm pretty sure he only checked the address as a formality, as he noticed my Vibrams and, "there weren't any footprints that would remotely match those crazy shoes."

I've used Sugoi compression socks, 2XU shin/calf sleeves and Nike Pro Arm Sleeves. I didnt like the socks because they didnt always stay up (I used them to run in). The 2XU calf sleeves are amazing. They definately help increase the blood flow and I'd buy another pair in a second. The Nike Pro Arm Sleeves I'm not convinced do anything but keep my arms a tad bit warmer.

I can't wear compression socks while I run, I feel too constricted! But I do agree about the arm sleeves. I think they are used as more of a fashion accessory, as well as an easily convertible long sleeve during winter runs, than they are for blood flow

4 degrees hotter today... the worst part is sweat in the eyes (aside from felling zapped of my energy)I wish I had a schedule that allowed me to go for an evening run... but since I go to bed before sunset and wake up before 2am... middle of the day runs is what I am stuck with for now. I just can't bear to run inside anymore. Which makes me laugh to myself... when I ran my half marathon at the beginnig of the month, we ran past a gym in the Ohio State campus area and there was this guy running on a treadmill in the front window watching everyone go by. It cracked me up!
Hey Phylers - I heard vibrams were all the rage with burglars, where do you think the phrase "Five Finger Discount" came from?????

I have the worst issue with sweat in my eyes during long runs. Using bondibands have helped out a lot though. I bought my first one at the W&D last year, and the result was amazing, it really helped me to see where I was going.

Nah, it's the other way around - with what they charge for so little raw material, Vibram is getting away with highway robbery. (As are all the shoe companies, but still ).

I highly recommend Bondi Bands. I had relied upon a combination of nothing and an old bandana for trying to deal with sweat, but I picked up a few Bondi Bands as part of a deal at the expo for the '10 Wine and Dine. They were worth every penny. I got the event-specific one for the '11 Wine and Dine, too.

For daylight runs, I do have a hat that Injinji sent as part of a "sorry we lost your exchange for about seven months" package that works almost as good. It's by Headsweats, and though I don't use it as often as the Bondi Bands, it likewise gets passing marks, especially on sunny days or days when I train at the beach.

I just checked out bondi bands online because I had never heard of them... low and behold my friend has one that he bought at the half marathon expo that says "will run for beer"
I'm just wondering if the extra heat generated by wearing something on my head is worth the no sweat in the eyes tradeoff. I guess I will have to figure that one out on my own LOL!

My CEP Compression sleeves (aka footless socks) arrived yesterday and I wore them all evening and even to bed hahaha. In the words of Tony the Tiger... "They'rrrrrrrrre Great!"

For me, anything is better than sweat in the eyes! I'm a sweater when I run, and the bondiband works great. I actually don't notice much extra heat around my head, as they are pretty thin. =)

I picked up a pretty neat headband yesterday at a bike shop that is actually supposed to channel sweat away from your eyes while wicking away perspiration. It's called a Halo headband.
Looking forward to testing it out... as soon as the temps get blow 90 again!

I don't know how we do it either. Now that the holiday weekend is over and I got word about my promotion/new position that's been in the works, I'm going to have to re-tool my schedule if I want to get any running in. I just can't do this 4PM crap that I've been used to. IT IS SO HOT OUTSIDE! Rawr.

I wear compression socks on my runs that are about 10+ miles. I absolutely LOVE them. I have bought a few through the Active.com Schwaggle deals so they end up being about $20-$25/pair, which I think is a good deal. I really and truly have noticed a difference when I wear them - my legs seem to function more efficiently and they definitely help with recovery. I haven't had shin splints once since wearing them and definitely had an issue with splints in the past. Oh, and compression socks helped heal my shin splints when I did have them (I got them to help them heal, I hadn't been wearing them before, and they definitely healed my shins!)

Last Sunday I went for what was supposed to be a 30 minute run (as suggested by the Jeff Galloway program) and ended up doing a 100 minute run! I managed to complete 10 miles for the first time ever, but I'm still hurting a little bit today. My wife and I are running the ToT 10-miler in September and then the Army 10-miler in DC at the end of October.

I drive to a cemetery and run in a 1.2 mile loop that has a few small hills. I found that I was able to maintain a good pace by stopping at my car after each loop, grabbing some water, walking for a minute and then continuing on. The only problem was that it was memorial day weekend and there were lots of people at the cemetery. Even though I left my water bottle next to my car on the ground, somebody thought it was trash and threw it out when I was on mile 7!

I had never ran farther than 2 miles a year ago. So if my lazy butt can do it, you can too!

See, that's one of my issues with running outdoors. I can plan out loops of varying distances for myself, but sufficiently hiding hydration along a route is inconvenient at best and a cause of major cognitive dissonance at worst. I mean, yeah, most people would probably leave a Gatorade hidden behind a tree alone, but you never know if it will disappear, be tampered with, etc.

I used to have the same issue of hydration, but then I bought a running belt. No matter what distance I am running, I always take my belt that has two water canisters attached. I fill one up with water to sip throughout the run, and one with Gatorade to replenish carbs at the 70 minute mark.

I, too, have a hydration belt. I can see you not wanting one of those, though, Phylers however they really do come in handy on longer runs, especially in this heat. I like to freeze half a bottle of Gatorade then take it out before my run and fill the rest of the bottle with water so I have a nice little mix for my run (plus it actually stays cold for most of the run, depending on how long it is and depending on how long the FL weather wants to torture me.)
