So my son and I saw the new Pirates of the Carribean movie today. I thought it was ok. Jack and Barbosa fantastic as usual. I could go on and on, but I'll let everyone else do that. So, what did you think?

We have a 11:15 showing hoping its good.....
I liked it. I definitely thought it was the second best of the four films.
Checkin it out this afternoon.
I fell asleep through it ..... that's all I have to say....
Don't understand the overblown hate being tossed at this movie by critics. I found it perfectly enjoyable, a fitting addition to the series. It's not a great movie, but it's definitely not a bad one. Only complaint is that visually it didn't hold a candle to the things we've seen in the previous films (Kraken, Davy Jones, whirlpool ship battle, etc.).
I really enjoyed it, not to give anything away but I loved the skeleton in the bed scene from the ride![]()
i just saw it earlier tonight, and contrary to popular opinion, i absolutely loved it! 9.6/10 i'd say. . probably the best film i've seen this yr
So go see it or wait?
We saw it last night... I'd say go see it too. It is one of the better ones for sure
I was actually surprised at the couple of instances of innuendo and the couple of blatant cleavage shots. Not that I was complaining but the first three only had a couple very subtle instances of innuendo.
I know! I was shocked by some of the innuendo in this movie (especially for a Disney film), and some very lewd metaphors used by the pirates when describing the mermaids! However, I would say it is definitely better than two or three, but not nearly as good as one. I do like seeing Jack's character fleshed out a bit more. And I just adore Barbossa in all of these movies--he is the quintessential "salty" pirate, and a perfect representation of the spirit of the POTC ride. Love him!
OK so here's my general take on this film: I'll try to avoid spoilers as much as possible.
Let me preface by saying that I enjoy all three films but only really consider the first one a "good film." I enjoy the swashbuckling aspects of the second one and really only enjoy the third one because, well, it finishes the story.
Now OST:
Pros -
-The movie is much more concise and to the point. For the most part Marshall and team have trimmed the fat from this film and given us a streamlined story that clocks in at under 2:30. We aren't burdened with the incoherent subplots that nearly ruined #3.
-Ian McShane as Blackbeard. It's always nice to have another actor of the classical sort join the fray.
- Beautiful art design. The Queen Anne's Revenge looks incredible.
-Mermaids - I expected to hate them but their sequence is good, frightening fun.
-Richard Griffiths
Cons:
-Johnny's Jack is starting to seem a little put-on
-Marshall seems afraid to pull the camera back and let us watch the swordfights. He edits in that "Bourne" style with fast cuts and jumpy cameras. The outcome? A lot of flashing steel but not much connectivity to the fights.
- Most criminally, Barbossa has been reduced to a clown for the first half of the film. They have stripped him of his dignity and given the work of such characters as Pintel and Ragetti and given the jokes to him. Unfortunate.
-It generally lacks the sense of fun and wonderment of the others (even the third). I think a lot of this is due to the darker visual tone of the film. Instead of lush jungle locales and open seas, we get night shots and dirty London.
-The clergyman. They cut the dead weight of Orlando and Keira (I never thought I'd say I missed them, but I kind of did) and replaced it with a worthless subplot.... and you thought the mid battle marriage was bad...
- Poorly written exposition. By condensing the time but wanting to maintain the plot twists, the writers (who, let's face it, are not of the best calibur) are forced to cram a whole lot of exposition into the opening act of the film. Rather than letting the audience discover the character facts, they must be force fed them.
-Jack has too much of a moral compass.
-Pointless 3-d
-Jokes don't land nearly as much
OK, I realize that by strictly weighing the pros and cons that I have written this one seems like a stinker. The truth is, the biggest pro of all was the streamlining. And that pro outweighs about 4 or 5 of those other cons. THe action is still fun, if not as thought out. The jokes still land enough to keep the mood light. Although I miss the old locations, the new ones are still interesting and Rush regains his dignity by the final act. All in all, the film is still thoroughly enjoyable and I look forward to seeing it again. As of this writing, I would rank it better than the 3rd and slightly lower than the 2nd. I know that they are working on #5 but I hope that it's the last one. The truth is the series is growing tired. Much of the criticism that I can throw at the film is only magnified by the fact that we've come to expect certain things with these films. Some of the excitement is simply no longer there. BUT for now, go see it. Enjoy it. It's a fun afternoon.
I would have liked this one a lot better if it was the first or even second pirates movie. It was just too much of the same and too predictable for me
I enjoyed the film, it focused on Captain Jack much more than the 3 previous films where he was not present in many scenes & sub plots. He does seem to have developed more of a moral compass, which takes a little bit away from his saltiness. I'd say it's a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
I really want to go see it but I'm afraid that I won't like it... I'm a huge Will & Elizabeth fan! I hate that they are not in it this time and am fearful that because of this I won't like the movie. Anyone else that has seen it felt the same way before seeing it that can give me their thoughts?
I definitely liked this movie but I didn't love it. I'm actually -not- a fan of Will & Elizabeth at all, so I enjoyed the different plot from the original three movies. But, I also didn't feel like it had much of a story going for it. Looking forward to see what they do with the franchise after this, though.![]()
I think I may check this out this weekend. I've like all of the other Pirates movies. I've heard pretty good things from people I've talked to.
I went this weekend and while I did like the movie I couldn't help but feel like this should have been a "part 2".
I don't want to go into spoilers so I'll just say I didn't really care for the way some things were just explained away. That would have made an awesome movie. Of course Barbossa (best. pirate. ever.) would have been the focus of that particular film so I can see why it didn't happen.
I also would have liked a bit more out of Blackbeard. He was just kind of there. I guess my hopes were just very high because I loved McShane on Deadwood and Pillars (no I didn't expect Blackbeard to have a potty mouth).
My favorites in the series go: 1st, 3rd, 4th, 2nd.
i haven't seen the movie yet. it was filmed here in hawaii. i got some pics of johnny depp and the ship. i think after that moment, i wasn't so excited anymore lol.
