    Creation

"The film was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has its British premiere on Sunday. It has been sold in almost every territory around the world, from Australia to Scandinavia.

However, US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution."

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...s-America.html

So the film, Creation, depicting the true story of Charles Darwin is being rejected by American film distributes out of fear of creationist's tantrums. Honestly, we can watch Mel Gibson slaughter Christ but we can't watch a simple movie about the greatest mind in science (and not to mention a real person)? America really needs to wake up from their fairytales. Honestly, I'm embarrassed.

Oh dont get me started on this, movies like this need to be shown here and close minded bigots need to get over themselves. I heard about this movie a while back and then it dropped off my radar so thanks for the post.

I does seem odd in a country with so much diversity that they are not willing to show it.
    People hate science, aye?

Yeah it really doesn't make sense that they would let Passion of the Christ hit theaters all across the country, but this can't. I mean, why not tell both sides? It's really not that big of a deal. If you're hardcore Christian and don't want to see the movie, then don't see it. You don't have to ruin it for everyone else that DOES want to see it by throwing a tantrum.

I probably would be one of the ones who wouldn't see it though... and not due to beliefs. One Planet of the Apes was enough for me.

Not sure what you were trying to say with that comment?

But the distributors are private entities. Personally, I think people get offended way too easily nowadays. If you disagree with what the film is presenting, then don't go. I'm Catholic, but i went to see The DaVinci Code in the theaters out here. There was a small group of "protestors" out there doing more good for the movie (in my opinion) than harm.

I have to agree. I'm also Catholic and wouldn't be offended at all by this. Heck, I'd probably go see it because it's about Charles Darwin. You don't have to agree with something to be entertained by it (not saying I agree or disagree either way; don't think it's my place to judge). This whole censorship thing seems to be getting worse and worse in a so-called "Free Country." Put in the theatres and let those who want to see see it.

Raised Catholic as well, but would still find this very interesting to watch.
I kinda struggle with the whole religion thing so I am open-minded to both sides of life for sure.

Same here. Raised catholic as well as 10 years of catholic school. But i've been what I like to call 'floating' in the realms of religious beliefs, but I'd definitely be interested to see this.

I don't see this movie not being released because of anti-evolution mentality, I personally see this not being released because it might not do well in a Christian based country where people don't believe in evolution.

I think this totally has to do with profit and marketing, and that in the long run, all the slack from Christian groups would not be worth releasing the film. I'm sure they have analysts to consider these things. If there was a lot of money to be made, I don't think that would stop any releasing whatever the content.

Personally, I think it would be good if they did a limited release in major cities to test the waters and see if it warranted a bigger release. But I think even then it would get enough negative publicity that it wouldn't be worth it. I'm sure someone already thought of that and they still opted not to.

This is all just speculation on my part, it could totally be anti-evolution; we were founded as a Christian based country. Personally, I find a nice balance of faith and evolution and would appreciate a movie like this.

For all you Catholics here, the late Pope John Paul II stated publicly that "Evolution is Compatible with Christian faith."

Hah! Beachgirl, this wouldn't be another Planet of the Apes. It's more just about Darwin's life as a father/husband/scientist than an in depth examination of the theory of evolution. Thank god for that to...

I agree with that. I seriously don't understand the outrage of his theories myself. Seems logical to me.

99.85 percent of relevant scientists accept evolution in the United States*. What this says to me is that if you don't believe in evolution it's only because you don't understand it

    * http://www.talkorigins.org/indexcc/CA/CA111.html

BigAl, it means that audiences accept religious films of people/events that didn't necessarily exist, at least to the extent they are portrayed, while people like Darwin and the events in this film are.

But Jesus isn't a make believe person. He was a real, historical figure. His divinity/lack thereof is the question. He was as alive as Charles Darwin ever was.

I smell a 'close thread' coming on. In my experience, religion is never a good topic of discussion overall.
Everyone has a right to their point of view, that goes without saying, just don't want it to get ugly is all. Just sayin'

I said this in my explanation to you earlier: "people/events that didn't necessarily exist, at least to the extent they are portrayed"

Read what's italicized. There is no historical evidence in zombies, pal. Sorry And technically, Jesus wasn't as "alive as Darwin ever was." We have evidence for Jesus' existence but proof of Darwin's. Not that this at all pertains to my thread about the movie... so let's get back on topic, shall we? Thanks.

Our country passed on this.........?? Or did the comapnies that show these films? I would like to see any movie on evolution - however; there are a ton of movies that are passed on in this country year after year. Bottom line is they need to make money in disrtribution..........

Haha. Well no, it's not like the president put a stop to this movie. But this movie, which was already in theaters in Europe and Australia, is to much of a hot-potato for any major distributor to find beneficial in the US. I mean, the word 'evolution' strikes such a deep cord with a lot of people in the states that none of the companies yet seem to feel this film will have a pay-off worth taking on.

Honestly though, this isn't even a picture about evolution. It's just about Darwin's life, struggles, and eventual publication of Origin of Species.
