    Sookie Stackhouse series

Ok, after catching up on True Blood and enjoying it, I've decided to start reading the books. Tonight I picked up Dead Until Dark and Living Dead in Dallas. I plan on going through the series (assuming I enjoy them which I think I will), and I figured this will be a good place to discuss the books apart from the TV series.

I'm currently reading Dead Until Dark. It's basically the first season so far, not seeing all that much different. It'll be interesting to see how it's different.

I'm on the first one as well. From what I understand, the first season is basically the first book. After that, it's much different. (or so I've heard)

Season 1 and Book 1 have a lot of differences. Alan Ball basically said he only uses 50% of what's in the books and then makes up his own material for the other half.

Yea, I think I know what most of the changes are, but I'm only about half way into the first book and so far its more or less the same.

    but I'm still excited

The major difference b/w book 1 and season 1 is the character Jessica. She doesn't even exist in the book and that whole thing with Bill and Longshadow was made up. They kept the main idea of book 1 which was just following Bill and Sookie's relationship. The whole Tara story line isn't in the book at all. She's barely in it actually. They added a lot more to Jason in season 1 as well. So yeah, I mean if you think about it there are a lot of differences.

The book is from Sookie's point of view so of course all the stories behind Tara, Lafayette, and Jason are going to have to be made up because Sookie isn't always there.

Living Dead in Dallas was a lot more different from season 2 I think though.

Yeah, I was just noticing that a lot of things about other characters were probably going to be left out since it's written in first person. I kind of like that though, it's kind of interesting seeing Sookie's POV. This is looking like it's going to be a fairly quick read, so I'm glad I picked up the second book at the same time.

I didnt even notice until about 120 pages in that Tara hasnt been mentioned, or at least I hadnt noticed (I speed read so I skip alot of the detail)

I really like that in the show they added Jessica, she adds alot to it I believe. And gives Bill more personality.

Am I the only one who is annoyed that they keep saying "county" in these books? There are no counties down here! It's called a "parish"

I didn't pay attention in the books, but I definitely noticed they said "parish" on the show a lot. I had no idea what that meant until you just said that too.

Yeah, Louisiana doesn't have counties, we have parishes. I was well into upper elementary school before I realized every other state called it a "county." That was also about the time I learned that what we refer to as "neutral ground" everyone else calls a "median," but that's mostly a So LA thing.

Edit: Ok, upon reading further, it looks like they're going back and forth between calling it a "county" and a "parish." I guess I can forgive that. I'll assume they occasionally say "county" so as not to confuse the majority of the people reading the books.

Just finishing up Dead Untill Dark....now on to book #2. I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy the next couple of books soon if I go through them as fast as I got through this one. Great read! Thanks to all those who recommended them....mostly Peaches Magee and BeachGurl!

Glad we got you hooked onto them
I remember going through Louisiana and reading Parish on signs every now and then and had no clue what they meant, I thought it was like churches or something at first.

Yeah, we have church parishes, but they're separate from our (county) parishes. For instance, I live in St. Charles Parish, but my church parish is St. Mark (1 of many church parishes within St. Charles Parish) It has a lot to do with how the area was settled; French, Spanish, German (and just about everything else) influences plus how prominent and influential the churches were at the time. If I remember my LA History classes correctly, it was taken directly from the churches/church parishes. (If I'm wrong, I know my brothers will have no problem correcting me.)

Glad you like them! I ended going through mine pretty fast so I'm glad I got the 7 books boxed set. I just bought the most recent two individually. Couldn't wait for a boxed set that included those.

I'm still trekking through the first one. Honestly, not really digging it so far. but that might change once I finish it. I'll definitely get the next couple books (eventually, I have about 40 other books sitting in my bookcase I still have to get to)

Do you watch the show? I think that helped me fly through the first one. I kind of knew what was going to happen (although there are a lot of differences, I had the general idea). I really like the characters she's created, (Bubba ) and she has the perfect amount of humor and is pretty subtle about it (which I also like). I'm glad I bought it as opposed to borrow because I'm sure I'll go through these again.

yeah, for some reason I only own one book mark and since it's holding my place in another book I've started, I'm using the Boarders' receipt from when I bought the books.

I have two...but the other one's in Vampire Diaries and since I've put that aside for a while, I'm down to one.

Thats like when I use a valentines day envelope (one of those from the kiddie cards) as a bookmark whenever I read HP.

Ok, I'm currently on chapter 3 of Living Dead in Dallas and I'm starting to get a little creeped out at how much Bill enjoys brushing Sookie's hair. It just seems really awkward to me. Was that considered a fun time during the civil war?
