When do they usually announce the dates for the following years SWW? We want to plan a trip for the first weekend through DVC and need timetable so we can get the accommodations we want.

Unfortunately, it's usually pretty late that we get the official dates. I want to say around January/February-ish.
For planning purposes though, the past few years have been the last two weekends in May and the first two (or three) in June. It's been different before that, though (at least one year was completely in June). If you were just looking to be there, period, I'd say Memorial Day weekend is the safest bet, but it probably won't wind up as the first one.

Food and Wine Festival is the big fall event at WDW and then right into the Halloween and Christmas parties. Star Wars Weekends fills in the slow period in the spring with the Flower and Garden Festival.
No, I don't know the time of the year by what's going on at the parks, why do you ask?![]()

I'm late to this discussion, but I was there for the Opening and again on the 27th for a bit. In terms off Opening Day--
What. A. Madhouse. I think the most I saw of George Lucas was the top of his head in the video I took. All I could see with my own two eyes was an arm here, a leg there of various characters. I couldn't see hardly anything at the parade on the 27th because I am not the tallest gal in the world. They really need to switch the parade route back to how they used to do it; don't end it at the hat stage, keep going the whole "normal" parade route.
I went to the tent early in the day, but the line was crazy. Went back right after the second Fantasmic ended, had no line, and got everything I wanted but the Opening Day pin. Fine by me in exchange for not waiting in a psycho line again like I did in 2010.
Did anyone else see Mr. Ego's (aka Daniels') one man show on the 20th? Oh, the jokes just wrote themselves... As , er, entertaining as it was, I wish I had not gone. That's an hour+ of my life I will never get back.![]()
