Does anybody else on here follow a club soccer team or pay attention to the leagues in Europe?
I am a huge Arsenal fan and can't wait for next weekend. I'm excited about the Championship kicking off today because it means the real football's back, none of this international crap at least after next week anyhow.

First off, I'll say good luck to you, but secondly I'll say '61 and never again.
How do you feel about Spurs prospects for the season? Are you happy to be linked with any of the rumored players that you are supposedly after at the minute? I.E. Bellamy, Ashley Young, Micah Richards, etc.
Not sure where you live but surely you'll be getting up early for the clash against City, right?

Haha, yeah, well, for the past two decades or so, the whole Premiership has been controlled by the Big Four, so '61 isn't so bad. Plus, it was a double!
I'm in Orlando, and while I'd consider getting up for the season opener, I've got another commitment that day (Star Wars CV). Most of the televised games get replayed during the week, so I'll catch it sooner or later.
As for the transfers, I'm kind of "meh" all around. I feel like the team is pretty strong right now, and despite the injury concerns, Modric and Woodgate are the only real losses - King is always limited, Defoe is nearing fitness, and despite his brief brilliance last year, Pavlyuchenko ought to always be the odd man out with all the striking talent. I was honestly hoping they'd sell him. Crouch and Defoe work remarkably well together, and Keane can slot into the midfield when not used up front. Use the rapidly maturing Dos Santos as a super-sub, and you've got a pretty fearsome foursome up top.
I was a little bummed about Joe Cole going to Liverpool. I like Liverpool a lot, I think every soccer fan has to on some level, but they've regressed. Hodgson should get them back on track, but they're still stuck with only two legitimate attacking threats and an aging core.
I get the feeling that Young and Richards are overpriced, and I don't think anybody will panic and pay those prices. I love watching Bellamy, and he's got great energy, but I think he was going to Fulham all along.
I'm always surprised by Arsenal. Wenger always seems like he's playing with fire, but he rarely gets burned.

as a dutchman I'm totally into soccer.
I'm a huge PSV fan and I'll see all the home matches in the Stadium cause I have a Season ticket. Our Key players are Afellay, Dzsudszak and Toivonen. Although I think Salcido and Maza are more known in the world.

I like the Dutch b/c of the Arsenal connection there, I even have a dutch t-shirt that I wore throughout the World Cup. I'm not a PSV fan seeing as how Alex almost single-handedly knocked us out of the Champions League about 4 seasons ago. I know Salcido cuz he's Mexican, and Ibrahim Affelay because he's a hyped youngster.
As for Spurs, 'Arry is apparently shopping Crouch, and I wouldn't count on Gio. He's never done it in England. I think Bellamy and Keane provide you similar things although Bellamy is probably the more energetic. And yeah Hughes gets the best out of him so Bellamy to Fulham makes the most sense. I think Pav is a good striker and I'm not sure why he doesn't see more time. Your defense is a shambles though and admittedly so is ours. Any English player with any hype is over-priced. Ireland is a much better player than Milner but apparently Villa are going to get Ireland and 25mil. for Milner.

Really excited for todays game. I woke up at 6:15am this morning without my alarm even going off for a 7:45am kickoff. On top of that, my team doesn't play until tomorrow.

Some interesting transfers today. Ozil to Real Madrid, Milner to Citeh with Ireland and cash going the other way, and rather oddly Bellamy to Cardiff City.
Definitely think Villa got the better of the Milner deal.

I'll kick a wall if they sell Crouch. He's easily my favorite footballer, and it was a relief when he signed for Spurs. I followed him from Liverpool to Pompey (ugh), and I literally leapt with excitement when he came to Spurs. From a money standpoint, I get a sale, but I don't think Redknapp would go for it. One, Crouch came to Spurs in order to stay with Redknapp (as did half the team, but still); two, none of the other strikers offer his size and dexterity, both of which will be valuable in the Champions League; and three, Defoe is clearly the top striker, and of the remaining four, Crouch is the only one who's shown a clear chemistry with him.
Pavlyuchenko is good, but his work ethic seems to lag at times, and he had trouble working with Defoe and Keane last season. Add to that the rumors of his poor efforts in training last year, and I understand why he's basically a bench guy. I think he'll see a lot more time with the expanded schedule. I also think he kind of needs Arshavin - they've always excelled together and not lived up to expectations apart.
As for the defense... yeah, it's up in the air. Woodgate may miss another season, which hurts England, too, as he could easily start for the national team if fit. King will be solid when he's available, and Assou-Ekotto is reliable. Gareth Bale improves every year, and while he may make an occasional blunder, Michael Dawson is at least sound. Hutton and Kaboul - well, we'll see.
What's your take on Gallas to Spurs? He kind of fell out of favor with Arsenal, but I understand that was more of an attitude thing.
Gotta love that 6 that your guys put up over the weekend. If they can keep scoring like that, who needs a defense?
Anders Limpar
08-27-2010, 12:57 PM
Seems like we are the only two interested in footie. I hear 'Arry is interested in Fabiano which would be a good short-term signing although hes about the same age as Robbie Keane who has already shown he's past it. It'd be foolish to sell Crouch now since he basically assured your qualification for the Champions League proper and he scored the crucial goal in the 1-nil win against City at the end of last season.
In defense you have a number of question marks as you mentioned. King is quality but how is he going to cope with the extra games this season. But even guys like Assou-Ekotto and Corluka are no great shakes, good going forward, lackluster in defense. My family heritage is Croatian btw so it kills me that Spurs have 3 Croats and they might add a fourth in Stipe Pletikosa and we sold our Crozilian, Eduardo, this summer. Bale at this point really is no longer a left back he's pretty much a left sided mid-fielder or forward.
Tough champions league draw for you lot. Inter is Inter. But I think Werder is a difficult one as well. If you win the head to head with them you should be through but I'm not convinced you will. Twente is no longer coached by McClaren and I don't know a great deal about them.
Gallas is a cancer and is not worth the headache. Making him captain was one of Wenger's biggest mistakes. He is a great defender and he scores a couple of goals but he misses chunks of the season due to injury. At his age, we'll see how much you get out of him.
6 goals is nice but it was against a 10 man Blackpool so I'm not really going overboard with that scoreline.

Yeah, its close for me as well. Its really difficult for me not to feel immense passion for my team despite the fact that I live an ocean away from them and have never seen Arsenal play live.
Wigan...really? At least when we lost to Wigan we were suffering from an injury crisis, took our foot off the gas, and were playing on the road. This is the type of game that will be entirely new to Spurs aside from a handful of players, playing a weekend premier game after a mid-week Champions League game.
Lastly, I really don't care for Sam Allardyce so any win against one of his teams is great in my eyes.

I think the CL layover might have had something to do with it, especially given the elated atmosphere that followed that game, but I think bobteace hit the nail on the head that the players weren't really taking Wigan seriously. It seems to be a Spurs trend sometimes. I don't remember who it was last season, but they lost a howler right in that hunt for fourth, and it really looked like they were looking forward to more prestigious opponents. I mean, they had chances, and they looked on the verge for most of the second half, but once Wigan started going forward, you just got that sinking feeling that it would be another wasted opportunity.
Liverpool had the same problem when they were chasing for the top a few years back - they'd look great against elite competition, but put them up against Sheffield, and they'd play down to the opponent.
Definitely a scoring defense at Spurs, but Corluka can make some nifty steals to break up a rush. And while I'll admit that Bale is clearly more comfortable going forward, he's rarely exposed covering the left side. Head-to-head, I'd take him over Ashley Cole any day of the week. Once Modric comes back, I think the defense will solidify. He's overlooked, but it's a calming influence to know that you've got a guy who can latch-on to anything you pass his way and actually hold the ball.
No worries on the CL draw. Inter is indeed a powerhouse, but I think Spurs can hold with Bremen. Ozil left them for greener pastures, after all. And don't overlook the Benitez effect at Inter - he had some success early on on Merseyside, but he ultimately ran Liverpool into the ground.
How's the deja vu with seeing Shakhtar again? Memories withstanding, Arsenal have to be a lock to win that group.

Van de Vaart at deadline could be a nice pickup. Liverpool got nothing. The sale must go through. I don't want Man City money but stable ownership is a must. Could really see a Giant team fall rapidly if they can't get buyer. Administration (I don't think will happen) top players wanting out in January transfer period. Whether you love or hate, it would be bad for football if a big club like that went to Championship. At least with the history of the club. Again, don't think that will happen but I guess Juventus(Cheating), Newcastle and Leeds didn't think it possible either. Portsmouth, not a big club, could sink all the way to League 2 with all their problems over the next few years.

Phylers:
I'll just say you underestimate Werder at your own peril, and I'd be wary of Twente as will. You should do decently at home but I could see Spurs finding it really tough on the road, really tough. The best part of your draw is that the travel is relatively minimal.
Looks like Dawson did his knee, and ankle ligaments playing for England. Gallas getting thrown into the fire already? This is your problem, defense, center back in particular. VDV is a bargain and a useful player but he seems unnecessary. You have too many attacking midfielders so I don't see him playing centrally unless you move Modric to the bench, which seems unlikely. Plus I thought Niko was 'Arry's boy from Pompey, what does this mean for him? Does 'Arry move VDV to the wing and bump Bale to fullback, that seems really dumb. Or does he bump Lennon, who's pace is useful but I think he is overhyped b/c he is flashy and English.
Bob:
Woy did well not spending a boat load of money for Fulham. I think he has bought very well this summer. Meireles is a very good player, he is basically your deadline day signing. Konchesky is a solid, if unspectacular player. But you had nothing at left back. Danny Wilson, the 18 yr. old signed from Rangers, is one for the future but he is going to be a great signing. Your midfield is very strong. The defense is fairly old and the forwards are lacking so you certainly have holes. But I rate Woy highly enough that I think you will pip Everton for the 4th spot. Woy will just need a bit of time to get it right.

These international friendlies right after World Cup and at beginning of Club season is ridiculous. Either Prem and Bundesliga have to move back season or exemptions should be made. Kuyt out at least 4 weeks for what? Euro qualifiers coming up but please are all the friendlies so necessary? Especially for a guy like RVP and Torres who have knocks already for them to be included is stupid. Del Bosque is an idiot!

Did anybody catch the Valencia injury? It was pretty bad. It was an obvious break. I want go into any graphic descriptions. It was just an tangling of two players and not really a challenge so to speak. Plus Spurs being 2-nil up at Werder and then blowing the lead makes me happy. From what I saw VDV looked good and is a convenient replacement for Luka. Lastly, Twente getting a draw within Inter was quite unexpected.

We are all biased towards our teams I realize that but Phil Dowd was so one-sided in his officiating yesterday it was atrocious. Yes we won a penalty, I almost fell out of my chair when he gave it b/c I was in disbelief. We also didn't get another nailed on penalty and an absolute handball in the box. I've watched enough footie to know what your average referee will call a foul, we didn't get those today. I think it definitely stems from what Wenger has said about teams playing us physical and subsequently Sam Allardyce and Owen Coyle saying we get calls because of the media. I haven't even mentioned the joke of a red card for Song yet either.

Well this is kinda turning into a one man thread, but Arsenal where terrible today. An incredible amount of credit goes to WBA. They were excellent, they didn't play us physical and bend the rules like a Blackburn. They beat us at our own game by passing and possessing the ball. Too many players coasted today and acted like all they needed to do was show up and 3 points would be handed to them.

Thought I would chime in.... yes, a footy fan from SoCal.
Mum was born near Newcastle, and Dad is from Liverpool, I was born there too.
Last year was tough with the Magpies losing several good players, but they won the "Fizzy Pop" league as my Uncle Jimmy calls it... and with a record number of points if I recall...
The Reds have a number of things going against them, injuries and off-field issues, whilst N'Castle has gotten off to a decent start with a win against Everton in the EPL and a surprising 4-3 Carling Cup win this week AT STAMFORD BRIDGE !!! Its been a while since you've seen the Toon ahead of L'Pool in the tables - that is for sure.
Love waking up early on the West Coast to watch FSC and keep up to date with the happenings....

Nasri was a one man team. First goal for Liverpool was horrible even for a Liverpool fan. Should have been disallowed. I guess it is a giveback from the beach ball goal against Sunderland last year. Not looking good for Merseyside teams right now. Hicks should be banned from owning any teams. Only problem this week was Man City winning even against Chelsea. Liverpool will almost have to win out to have any shot now. Torres will be gone come January if they don't have new owners. Roy could be gone too. Arsenal need a keeper bad.

Stuart Atwell is a terrible ref. We had him and couple a weeks ago when we played Bolton. He missed an obvious red card for a horrible tackle by Paul Robinson. Atwell is the same guy who gave a goal in the championship that not only did not go in the goal it wasn't even on frame. You can look at his wikipedia, they list about 5 or 6 of his high profile errors. The scary thing is that the FA is basically fast tracking him to start refing the champions league. He was rushed into the Premier League before he was ready, I shudder to think of him in the Champions League.
Everybody bar Arsene Wenger knows we need a keeper. We just announced record profit and yet Wenger was unwilling to budge an extra mil or two for Marc Schwarzer, who would have only been a marginal improvement.

Torres is just invisible. His value is going to start slipping if doesn't perform. He has had a horrible 12 month spell with injuries. I think a buyer is sitting there waiting to get bottom line number. Hicks is maybe the worst sports owner ever. Every franchise he touches goes broke. Europe needs to tighten rules on teams and money. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man U, Liverpool all mired in debt. Yet Bayern Munich makes money hand over fist.

Roy is going to get the sack. I can't understand what is wrong with this team. Losing at Anfield to Blackpool is criminal. I know they won't end up in relegation zone but still, this is embarrassing and has nothing to do with the sale situation. Getting docked 9 points is a big deal to ponder now. No offense to Leeds but they are not Leeds United. King Kenny will be coach within 3 weeks if they do not get Wins. Chelsea are the class of the Prem at this point. Makes me sick but it is what it is.

Oh and did you see that the proverbial stuff hit the fan today with Hicks and Gillette blocking a sale? Purslow and the other guy are doing their best to ensure the club gets sold. Both buyers are supposedly going to eliminate the debt. One is from Asia and the other owns the Red Sox.
BTW I have this sinking suspicion that you'll beat Everton in the Merseyside derby and that'll kick start your season. Although at the beginning of the season I did pick Liverpool to finish second so maybe I have no idea what I am talking about.

This is a pretty sad day for Boston sports. Not only did we lose Randy Moss, but we learned that the last few Red Sox seasons, and a few upcoming seasons were/are all just a ploy for John Henry and company to raise enough capital to buy Liverpool. It explains so much now. Nobody could understand why they threw so much money at JD Drew and John Lackey (who nobody wanted). It was just to say "hey, we ARE investing in the team" without having to pony up too much for a real elite player. But when Mark Texiera, a true franchise player, came along they balked at the extra $10 million it would have taken to sign him and watched him go to the Yankees. I'm thankful for the two WS in my lifetime, but there is nothing to look forward to for the Red Sox in the next 3-5 years - but they'll still somehow get away with charging insane ticket prices for the tourists who want the "Fenway experience".

I think the Pats will be fine without Moss, plus the rumor is they are going after another elite wr.
I'd love it if the Pirates were only spending enough money to buy the John Lackeys and JD Drews of the world. Instead we either dont spend money, or we spend it almost exclusively on Aki Iwamura, who was a monumental bust.
Lastly to be honest, I'm not sure NESV can pull this off, they are supposedly worth 1.1bil. Not sure how much it will cost to buy Liverpool and pay off the debts. But we know a debt payment of 215mil is due October 15th, and thats just debt, that doesn't include the club's worth. They want to build a staidium and say they have money to fund purchases in the transfer window. I'm not sure how this happens unless Henry wants to sink all he is worth into Liverpool or they are going to take on debt just like the previous owners.

Yeah, rumor has it that they're in trade talks with Seattle to bring back Deion Branch which would be cool. They just need somebody to take the defensive pressure off Welker.
I know, I really shouldn't complain considering there are lots of other MLB teams like the Pirates, Marlins and Royals who have horrendous ownership. But still, ever since 2007 the team has been in a steady decline, but the ticket prices are still the highest in the game. Theo's been very lucky in the past with Ortiz, Lowell, Bill Meuller, the Nomar trade, etc. But recently, he's been completely cold and has made some questionable decisions (let Alex Gonzalex walk and sign Marco Scutaro instead for almost twice as much money). And the fact that they pretty much gave up on the team in August and didn't trade for any RP before the deadline really pissed a lot of fans off. Oh well.
Henry's a smart business man. I never saw the $100 million Dice-K signing as a way to improve our rotation (though it did to an extent). It was more of a way to make the Red Sox brand profitable in an un-tapped Japanese market. To him, he's not buying just a sports team, he's buying one of the most popular brands in the sportsworld at a bargain price (relatively speaking). And he knows how to squeeze the most out of it (just look at the absurd number of "Pink Hat" fans at Fenway Park and you'll understand). I'm sure he'll do just fine with Liverpool. What waits in store for the Red Sox though is what worries me.

Been a way from boards for a while. Liverpool has the best owner possible. Henry will do things the right way. Carroll move was a gamble but it was a trade off on Torres money. They will be perfect for the new FA rules on managing money yet bringing talent. Squad looks so much better under KK. Great move putting 3 CB on pitch to handle Torres. Carragher looked so good in first match back too which was shocking as he was a liability before injury. Great weekend of football too. Arsenal Newcastle match was great as well as Wolves MU.
By the way, Anders, sorry about Geno's knee. Don't want Flyers to run away with it due to injury.

Chelsea play that diamond midfield and the 3-5-2 should in theory overrun that. So good tactical move by Dalglish. However, I don't think you could get away with that formation against say a Villa that plays wide men who tug the touchline. I think all those people bashing Meireles earlier in the season were dumb and I felt that way back in the fall as well. He is a quality player he just needed a bit of time to bed in and now he looks like one of the buys of the season.
Geno's injury is tough to take. I'm not sure what we do moving forward. Bin the season, try and make a blockbuster trade, etc.

Now can't wait for summer for someone like an Ashley young on the wing. Glad Roy got the West Brom job. Liverpool was just too big for him.
Pens will get huge cap relief to make a blockbuster but do they really want to part with the future to do so. Very smart to keep Crosby out till March with the Concussion. Trust me, you do not want a Lindros or Primeau situation. As much as I DO NOT LIKE Crosby, I can't argue that he could be a top 5 player of all-time when said and done.

Arsenal, when playing at their best, are the second best team to watch in the Prem. Newcastle match as example, first half it was just masterful play then... Ouch. 2nd half of Barca match again they were just sound in their play, Nasri great pass, what a coup having him. I just can't take Wenger's constant whining even though not as bad as red nose. Wish I would have had the born-in fan stamp that you have in England but still enjoying my newness to Loving Soccer. I can watch so many more matches without disdain. I could NEVER watch Penguins, Cowboys, Giants, or Mets games that my Flyers, Eagles, or Phillies are not a part of. I tolerate no rivalry to my birth teams even though I now live in NC. I find it entertaining to watch any prem match even if Liverpool aren't playing. Haven't acquired the Liverpool follower hate for Man U and Everton yet. Don't route for them but can watch them. If it wasn't for the Stevie G amazing free kick goal I saw in tuning in to my first random prem match, who knows who I would be following. But very glad it turned out that way especially in a downer time so I can't be branded a front-runner.

For me both Arsenal and Sp*rs both play better stuff than United. Neither of us can defend whereas United can clog it up and strangle a game. United don't have the same creativity in midfield that us and Sp*rs do as well, aside from the odd flash of brilliance from Giggs or Scholes.
For the Newcastle game you have to factor in that Diaby's sending off was incredibly stupid by him and there is no comeback if its 11 v 11. Also, we had no def midfielders that were healthy to bring on. And Djourou got hurt and we had to bring on Squillaci who has been very poor. Lastly, the second peno was never a peno. So all due respect to Newcastle, it was the perfect storm of factors that came together.
I definitely watch games from rival teams to root against them. Trust me, after a couple of close losses to United or a loss late in the cup or something, you'll hate United.

The thing with United is that they actually play very conservatively, that's just the style that Sir Alex has them playing. They play to the bare minimum needed to win, but they win consistently nonetheless. Do agree with your points, especially the midfield creativity thing. Arsenal has a solid and creative midfield with a decent amount of depth when there's Wilshere, Fabregas, Song, Nasri...

It was just one of those days. Not sure what they showed on the MOTD but Arshavin was pushed in the box, no penalty given. The commentators thought it should have been a penalty. Also, Arshavin was ruled to have been offside when he was in fact onside, he went on to round the keeper and score. Sunderland defended well and full credit to them but we created a number of chances and failed to take them. I thought the Nasri free kick was ticketed for the top corner but their goalie made an excellent save.
I saw Millwall lost 1-0, were you able to see any of that game? Is there a MOTD style show for the lower leagues?

Yeah they were better than us but I'm not sure how I could put up with the constant flopping and playacting from Barca if I was a fan of theirs. Wilshere goes down one time and all hell breaks loose. Yet they spent half the game rolling around grabbing their knee or ankle. And the referee...disgraceful. Call it evenly for a start, and secondly the Robin Van Persie sending off was ridiculous. One second went between the whistle and his shot.
---------- Post added at 05:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:51 PM ----------
Asked if the sending off had a significant impact on the result, Van Persie said: "I believe so. I think it had a big influence. It was a total joke, the sending off, because how can I hear his whistle with 95,000 people jumping up?"
When it was pointed out that there was just one second between the whistle and Van Persie's shot, the striker replied: "Makes it even worse. This way - one second from his whistle to my shot - makes it even worse.
"It's just a joke. He's been bad all evening. He's been a joke all evening, whistling against us. I don't know why he's here tonight. I think it's a joke."

Well done Millwall, I think its beyond them to get into the playoff places but you never know. I'm really hoping Norwich, Swansea, and Forest go up but I don't think anyone can catch QPR.
The stats say that Barca dominated which they did. However it was 1-1 and we were in a winning position when RVP was wrongly sent off. Their goal at the time was setup by an incredibly foolish backheel by Cesc on the edge of our box. All of their possesion was in midfield and we defended everything in the box very well. You never know what might have happened had RVP been allowed to stay on the pitch especially b/c in the past we scored goals against them late in games when they appeared to have tired. But you simply can't play Barca 10 v 11 for any extended period of time without giving up a ton of chances.

Finally, SAF, punished as he should be. He makes Wenger look like a good sport. Guys like that just feel that nothing they do is wrong and they never have a reason to lose except for bad calls. Been away awhile again so have not commented on the trouncing of Man U by KK and the boys. 5th is out of reach but watch out next year as long as they don't replace Reina with Paul Robinson. Reina deserves to play CL football and Arsenal would be my obvious choice over Man U. Szczesny looks like the real deal though.
I thought our papers were rumor mongers but the English press come up with some doozies everyday. Understandable though because if the NFL was he only sport we had then it would be even crazier than it already is.

RVP definitely has a short fuse but the ref let Dani Alves get away with basically an elbow on RVP and then let both Abidal and Victor Valdes put their hands on RVP's throat/face with no punishment. With all the diving and crap Barca did I would have been going in knee high come late in that game, give them something to really roll around the ground about.
The Liverpool situation is pretty interesting. I think you're set up top and pretty decent in midfield (maybe one more addition) however the defense definitely needs some addressing. Obivously, if Pepe walks you'll also need to replace him. He's made it through the hard part now, he should just stick it out b/c I think Liverpool will be back to being one of the "big four" next year.
Fergie is allowed to get away with a ton and never gets punished. So I am glad he finally did. Hopefully it has some effect on the title race but I doubt it.

I'm not sure how lucky we were considering their 2nd was a mix up where Almunia was literally 20 yds from goal and all Odomwinge had to do was put it in an empty net. We battered them once Denilson came off and we had a legit penalty appeal turned down with literally 5 seconds left. We easily couldn't have won this game but we simply don't have any luck.

I thought Wilshere was very good against Wales. England weren't at their best but they didn't have to be. If Bent would have hustled he could have had 2 other goals because Wilshere played in 2 balls that were graet. Ashley Young was probably the other stand out player for me. Can Theo Walcott be part of the Reina transfer in the summer? He loves Liverpool and his pace would be welcome along with Ashley Young's. Davide Santon would be nice too. Wake me up as I am dreaming. Challenging for 5th is not bad especially with all the losses. I am so already waiting for next season. No player is bigger than the Club!!!!!!!!!
Davide Santon got a bit lost at Inter. He was a bigtime prospect just a couple of years ago and they either sent him out on loan or sold him to another team in Serie A. I know Theo is a Liverpool fan but I don't think we'll be letting go of him anytime soon. He does get injured constantly though.

As much as I would like to prevent United from winning the title. I just don't think its happening. They came from 2-0 behind to beat the Hammers whereas we couldn't beat Blackburn at home. The gap is now 7.
I think Liverpool's inconsistent performances are to be expected. You are bedding in a few new players and there is really nothing to play for.

They have the "muscle memory" of winning if you will. Also they have an aura about them which Arsenal used to have back in the early to mid-2000's. The smaller teams often roll over for United.

It has also been said through one of Lebron's representatives that he has faith in King Kenny, thats a load of crap as well as I doubt he has any idea of the legacy of Kenny Dalglish.

Agree on the penalties even though Spearing on Fabregas was a better dive than Lucas. Lucas should have gotten a red for his. Wenger reaction to Daiglish was poor sportsmanship. How is Wenger so sure it wasn't a penalty from his vantage point? But call on Spearing was spot on? Like I have said before Wenger and SAF have a we are to good to ever lose complex. Wenger turned down Real a couple of years ago. Rumors always pop up around him. But there is no other job in the world where he would have as much freedom when it comes to buying players. I would take Mourinho in a heartbeat because he wins. It would never work out though because he plays defensive football. We might actually win things but he would be run out of town in about 2 years flat.

With the sale of Cesc and the likely sale of Nasri things look pretty bleak. I'm not really confident Wenger is actually going to spend the cash. I truly think this is Wenger's most important season and maybe his toughest job. If Arsenal fall out of the top four the fans will revolt.

Arsenal are a very poor team right now. The team wasn't good enough last year and we are severely weakened even when everyone is fit. There were four players on the bench who had never made a senior appearance for Arsenal. Another one who started was making his debut. Our 19 yr old rb who was playing in the conference at xmas was only playing in his 3rd or 4th game. 3 players were suspended due to red cards and we sold three starters in the summer, and Wilshere, Vermaelen, and Sagna were injured. This is Wenger's mess and he has to fix it. Everyone could see that Fabregas and Nasri were leaving and yet money hasn't been spent.

Congrats on the win. The mighty Coventry City was actually on tv here in the states. I wanted to watch the game but I spent a lot more time at the mall trying to get the contacts from my old phone put on to my iphone than I expected. I managed to catch the last 30 seconds.
Tough one for Arsenal as we conceded in the 88th minute to a wonder strike from Dortmund, finished 1-1. Dortmund dominated however and I'm not sure a draw was a fair result to Dortmund.
Blackburn 1- Arsenal 2 at half.
4-3 Blackburn FT. Arsenal defended like only Arsenal can, which is to say we didn't defend at all. To be fair we created a number of chances in added time, Mertesacker missed an absolute sitter of a header from all of 2 yds.

Its really embarrassing that we are in such a state that those are the type of legitimate jokes we have to deal with.

Liverpool was on the edge last season but then they went to the top and surived. Maybe Arsenal will do the same.

Yeah Liverpool spent lots of money though. I can't see us shelling out 20-odd million for a player of Suarez's caliber.
Ipswich/Coventry thats a pretty interesting Monday night game.

Wolves 5, Millwall nil. Yikes. I'm a big fan of Mick McCarthy because he's got an amazing Yorkshire accent and he clearly detests dealing with the press. Commiserations on the loss though.

Arsenal back to their old selves at least a little bit. 3-nil over Blackburn, RVP becomes the 17th Arsenal player to reach 100 goals for the club.

After Ryan Shawcross broke Aaron Ramsey's leg in pretty bad fashion Stoke has become one of my most hated teams. Beating them 3-1 is pretty sweet.
Citeh beat Utd 6-1 and QPR beat 9 men Chelsea 1-nil.

Chelsea 3 - Arsenal 5, amazing match. Not sure that I've ever experienced the range of emotions before 10am like I did today. I'm still in shock how Arsenal were able to carve open a back line of Cole-Terry-Ivanovic-Bosingwa regularly.

Hey guys! Huge soccer fan. Started watching during the 94 world cup. I watch EPL, La Liga, some Serie A. I live right across the bridge from Philly so I'm a Philadelphia Union fan. Can't wait til next year for the Olympics and Euro 2012.

Quality, can't say I'm a fan of your support for any of the Philly teams though. USA v Brazil on the Fourth of July in 94 WC was the first game I watched. Do you support a team in any of the leagues you mentioned?

I only mentioned one Philly team, the Union, hard not to support an expansion team in your own backyard. I hate the Eagles(been a Bills fan since I was 4) . Don't really care about the other sports.
I've only been watching the European leagues since 2008, when I stumbled upon GOL TV and FSC. I had always watched Champions League when ESPN had it though. I can't say I'm a die-hard fan of any one team. I root against Man U, and prefer Barca over Real Madrid. I have a soft spot for Roma because of Batistuta.
I love the NFL, but I would watch Barca vs. Real Madrid over any NFL game.

Fair enough about the Philly thing. As a Pittsburgher, its been instilled in me to hate all the Philly teams.
I'm a die-hard Arsenal fan. Smart of you to root against United. I don't root for any other teams but I do always look for Shrewsbury's results (team in the lower leagues of England) and Hibs' results (team in Scotland).

Crazy end to the season yesterday. Thought United had it done and dusted. My boys finished third after a hilarious collapse by Spurs.
Definitely a Blackpool and Bayern fan come Saturday.
Also I'm a big fan of Roy Hodgson, so as long as he is England manager, I'll have to hope they do well.

Losing RVP to United was a bit rough. Hope Podolski and Giroud are the business. Cazorla fit in immediately on Saturday like he had been at Arsenal for 5 yrs.
0-2 for Millwall, not a good start. I think Blackpool will be pushing for promotion and you can throw out the first game of the season anyhow.
