This would be great if they return Captain EO. Even if it is just for Halloween time. My daughter never had a chance to see this and I am sure she would enjoy the music and 3D effects. Also looks best on the big screen.

I never saw it on the big screen, but saw it on youtube. As a video person, I know the quality of youtube degrades things, but knowing that its quite an older film and comparing the quality of HISTA right now, I would like them to use a new projection system and a re-mastering of Captain EO if they plan to bring it back so its more of a new thing rather than just a return.

It sucks though because it would only appear at DLR! :(

Eh, I would be indifferent either way (especially since I wouldn't be able to get to either park to see it). Plus, having it take the place of Honey, I Shrunk the Audience at Epcot wouldn't bother me...that movie is terribly dated.

Vinylmickey

I remember that it use to be nice to go in and see Captain EO on a hot afternoon, go in and cool off. I don't even get tempted to go into Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Seeing that a couple of times is enough. Now if we want to cool off we go to the Tiki Room.

I saw this many times at DL as a kid and they could easily put it in one of the theaters in California Adventure Park.

Why does it matter if he was alive would anyone care? If your going to do something upgrade and do something new. Yes people would come see this but more as a freak kind of viewing thing. I agree with who ever said it is terrible dated. I was watching some old 80's videos I loved and it is amazing how dated it looks and sounds now days.

Disney needs to dump the Honey I shrunk the audience as it is way dated also and find something more modern. I mean since they are updating TRON (Thank GOD) why not this. Let's not go backwards.

It appears that this is pretty close to happening. Looks like a confirmation announcement is expected at the D23 expo. There will also be Captain Eo merchandise for sale there as well. It will only be a temporary run though.

I think this has unofficial confirmation. I read about it on a different forum, but couldn't find the exact thread about it which spilled the details, but from what I recall, its supposed to return in January. It was originally planned to return in October, but there were some delays and issues which won't allow for that to happen.

HOWEVER, a quick google search lead me to miceage.com which said:

"Editor's Note 9/4-5: Captain EO Update - Honey I Shrunk The Audience will be closed next week, Tues thru Thurs. WDI will be installing the Captain EO special effects to prepare the theater for Thur's private performance of the old show for Jay Rasulo and other bigwigs in Anaheim for the D23 Expo. Assuming Rasulo can find Tomorrowland (turn right in front of the castle) and no one in the audience has any objections to the show, Rasulo should then announce EO's Jan return during his Expo presentation on the 12th. - Al Lutz"

From TalkDisney.com out of D23

Disneyland has “no definite plans to bring back” the Michael Jackson 3-D movie “Captain EO,” Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said today during an impromptu news conference at D23 Expo in Anaheim.

“There aren’t plans to bring back ‘Captain EO’ at this time,” Iger said. “We are looking at it. It’s the kind of thing that, if we did it, would get a fair amount of attention and we’d want to make sure we do it right.”

Iger and other Disney brass watched a screening of the 1980s-era sci-fi fantasy film this week and determined that the old music video needed to be further evaluated before it could be brought back into the Anaheim theme park.

Back in 1986, everybody wanted a piece of the hottest pop star in the world. So it was with much fanfare that Disneyland introduced “Captain EO,” starring Jackson.

It was an association the family-friendly amusement park would eventually come to regret as the bizarre pop star became increasingly embroiled in controversy.

The 17-minute “Captain EO” cost an estimated $30 million and featured a star-studded list of credits, including executive producer George Lucas, director Francis Ford Coppola and Anjelica Huston as the evil Supreme Leader.

The 3-D movie — featuring lasers, smoke and stars that extended into the audience — told the story of Captain EO’s mission to deliver a musical gift to a wicked alien queen on a dystopian planet. EO’s rag-tag crew included his sidekick Fuzzbucket, security officer Major Domo and blundering shipmate Hooter.

I love Honey..., but they do need to update the attraction some. Especially the preshow. I can only listen to true colors so many times.

09-11-2009, 09:28 PM
Honestly, They need a new show, PERIOD. They can't really update Honey because not a lot of the youngings remember Honey, I Shrunk blah blah blah....

Disney needs to bring Captain EO back, make a 3D out of a bunch of Pixar movies, or get George Lucas to do something 3D star wars ish..

Or how about even an interactive WALL-E show, that would be a perfect match for TomorrowLand, Space Travel, The Future, and also being Green and healthy....

I like that~!!!!

I agree that Honey, I Shrunk the Audience needs to go. It was fun for its time, but no one under the age of 25 remember--or cares about--that franchise anymore. It's a complete disconnect with young and teenage audiences, and even looks terribly dated to us old fogeys who do remember the movies. I definitely think it's timed for this classic attraction to be replaced.

I really like that idea. Honey is also getting into the realm of being dated and Captain EO was just something that came up when the pop star passed.

For as much as I like wall-e, my concern is that there's too much pixar going into the parks. There's already a buzz and nemo attraction close to that area that maybe adding wall-e there might be pushing it.

Honestly, i hope it was just a matter of wanting to announce it at the next D23 expo. I have had Captain EO on my iPod for as long as I can remember because it had always been my fave as a kid, Bad was the first CD I had ever bought because tracks had been played at Captain EO. Although it is a dated, it has always been a fan favorite. With Michael's passing there are def people who would want to travel to California to see this with full effects, I think when the MJ movie comes out later this month Disney will see the numbers and know. With proper restoration and effects this could draw in SO many people as well as please those who have been begging for it to come back.
Honey has to go, because
a) few kids are aware of the franchise
b) its equally as dated as EO but 90s opposed to 80s
c) it looks like the theater needs to be renovated, at least from the outside... cuz i dont go inside anymore, so I don't know how that's holding up
d) i say so.

For as much as I would like to trust your hubby, the key word is "rumors" so nobody get too excited. Last I heard was that an announcement was to happen soon.

As far as I know, I don't think it has anything to do with the This Is It success. Rather, I think it's just an influence of what fans have to say, how people feel (and the proven fact) of the poor performance of HISTA, and possibly has a great deal to do with how well they were able to restore the EO footage. I remember that they didn't announce something at the D23 expo because the footage at that time wasn't on par with today's standards, so my guess is that they did a restoration to it.

Hubby tells me the rumor he is now hearing is that "Honey" will close very soon(probably in the next week or two) and the refurbishement will last until Jan. I like the idea of it returning, thinking they probably had to restore the video. Will this bring crowds into Disneyland when it is typically slow in Jan/Feb?

Exactly. I mean, yea Disney will make a mint off a dead guy but at the cost of making a mint off a dead guy. All the trendy new Jackson hipsters who came out of the woodworks claiming to be Micheal's biggest fans once word got out he died will eat this up.

Yeah highly agree. It looks like they are doing this for the money in it for them. After seeing the success of "This Is It," it looks like Disney wants to put some money up their sleeves.

However, if they will put some technical innovation in the show, then I wouldn't be so against it.

It just seems that doing things more for the money is hurting the park more and more (i.e.: nearly 1 million AP holders thanks to the monthly payments are really hurting the guests experience at the park, but brings in so much money to the business side).

I have captain EO on my phone... between that and Runaway Brain it's a good time killer while waiting for Fantasmic or the fireworks. Honey I shrunk the audience is indeed dated and captain EO would be fun for a limited run, but Tomorrowland is the lamest "land" in DLR right now. They need to overhaul the whole thing. The Star tours reDux will help but that should have come out to coincide with the newer SW prequel releases. Not gonna make the mass impact that it could have, will now just with the fan boys. I love the park as much as the next person on this forum, but Imagineering - for all the technology they have today - needs to do something big! The park needs it...

So it looks like this is definitely happening at Disneyland.

http://parksandresorts.wdpromedia.com/media/disneyparks/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/eop220092SMALL.jpg

Twenty-three years ago, at the height of his phenomenal entertainment career, Michael Jackson joined forces with Disney to create “Captain EO,” a groundbreaking 17-minute 3D film experience.

We are excited to confirm that the classic musical spectacular that thrilled Disneyland park guests from 1986 – 1997, will return for an exclusive, limited engagement at Disneyland park beginning in February 2010!

The attraction’s return to Tomorrowland will provide new audiences the opportunity to experience the original 3D production for the very first time, as well as a nostalgic look back for longtime fans wanting to see “The King of Pop” in a rare performance created for the big-screen, just one more time.

“Honey I Shrunk The Audience” will be closing sometime in the next few weeks to make way for the Captain’s return.

Any word on after the "limited engagement" what will replace it? Please tell me something better than "Honey I shrunk the Audience".

ryanvalle
12-26-2009, 01:26 PM
I'm speculating that the time it'll be here is still tentative and will be judged depending on the popularity of the attraction itself. If it withstands the tests of time, I wouldn't be surprised if its limited engagement just gets extended more and more and I hope this is what happens. Honey I Shrunk the Kids is overdue for a repacement in my opinion and that a "repeat attraction" is a great way to buy sometime till they come up with a new show to put in.

I personally am not for the EO return since I just find it ironic to bring something from yesterland into tomrrowland, however, even worse is if they end up replacing EO with the return of HISTA...

Here's what's been leaked out from various sources:

They're calling for CMs to preview the show tomorow from 330 to 430 to test the new effects.
They have no shifts filled to run the show this weekend so don't expect a premiere this weekend.
Chances are they'll do a public announcement of its opening, and with the public relations team being at WDW for the Summer Nightastic announcement, I wouldn't expect an announcement between now and this weekend.

Okay, just got back from Disneyland and just like Ryan said they will be hosting cast member previews tomorrow. There is still no sign up for the attraction but most of the exterior work has been completed. The cast member preview tomorrow will be testing how well the moving floor syncs with the actual movie. As far as a public release date, some of the cast members I talked too say it could be as early as the last week of February if all goes well. If not, look for it in early to mid March as TDA (Team Disney Anaheim) is shooting for the spring break crowds! Hope that helps!

They painted the front poster cabinets a bright purple color yesterday. It really stands out in front of the white and blue facade. I can't wait to see what the marquee looks like!

I have been going every weekend when the park opens in hopes that they opened the show and forgot to tell ppl. I will tweet this like crazy tho when it does!

Hi,
I was at Disneyland yesterday and was talking with a cast member. She said that they have been previewing the show to staff and that there are a few issues they need to work out. She said that they are shooting for the end of February. She said it was all but certain.

They are suppose to release some info on the line tonight on the Disneyparks Blog or twitter or through various websites like Miceage, Mouseplanet, etc! All we know now is that it starts at 10am, there is magic morning from 9-10 and guest who want to see Captain EO have to line up in the West Esplanade! Hope that helps!

From what I've heard, they will set up some queues outside of the park for those that want to arrive early...

The OC Register posted that Disney says they are planning on people lining up as early as 6am and that the line will extend from the west esplanade through the security check all the way through the picnic area and into the north tram load/unload area! Kinda crazy considering that the theater can handle a max of 600 people and the show is 17 minutes and Disney is planning on getting 3 shows in an hour!

God, I can't even imagine wait over 10 hours to see a 17 minute show! I think I can wait a little while, I learned my lesson after waiting over 3 1/2 hours for nemo, only to walk off thinking what the heck did I do that for?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AstW05bDiQU Well I am still going to see it. Here is another reason to "celebrate" EO at Disney! Oh yeah, If they are doing line-ups. It is people waiting off the park premises. (Like at the McDonalds and other 24 hour rest. across the street.) Security has been beefed up and the neighborhood watch guys are also beefed up. I called Guest Services and they said at 6 they will allow people to line-up for this. They do have a "special" line. I just wanna know how they will direct people to tomorrowland. They also reminded me to walk and to try not to trample or push anyone. I also wonder if any media will be their. I put in for a personal day for this :p

So Fox 11 New is there right now. There's been these people that have waited since last night at nine oclock at night they said. CRAZY. Didn't look like it was that packed though. lol. Guess Disney anticipated way too much and hyped up people lining up there were less than thirty people waiting. lol and its 600 to fill up. Yeah not what i think Disney expected. lol.

I was wondering the same thing. It would suck if it was all old and grainy.

I wasn't there and xtian might be better qualified to answer, but according to other reports, people were saying it doesn't look very much as a remaster or reprint copy. I hope to make my way down in the coming weeks and see it for myself.

Yeah I have been reading that it doesn't seem to be remastered, but when I go I can better answer that question! Many websites have reported that the missing effects from EO are smoke, lasers and fiber optic starfield. Oh well still better than HISTA!

that's a negative. my friend that was with me said it was the same way in terms quality of the picture. Like someone had just said, i heard that the lazers and smoke were removed too. It's still way better than HISTA.

We got to the park Tuesday morning around 10:15 and didn't wait too long to get in... walked right up to the line and within 15 min were inside... film looked just like it did back in the day... the lasers and smoke were gone... I don't remember the seats moving during the dance scene, which in my opinion was not necessary, especially for the fact it wasn't bouncing with the music... but all in all, it was great to see it again!
