The title is self-explanatory. Post about the movies you feel deserve a little more love. I look forward to your recommendations.
For me, there are two films I believe to be the most underrated sci-fis. The first is "Gattaca" staring Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawk, and Jude Law--directed by Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show). More recently, I came across the British indie film, "Moon," starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey (so to speak). Both films were absolutely fantastic. Great writing, great acting, and nothing over the top.

I love GATTACA! We used to watch it a lot on sub days in Bio Class. haha. Back in the day. Hmm, I can't think right now but one of my favorite underrated films: Bend it Like Beckham. The average person I know has never seen it. I love watching Indian Culture in movies. I need to make an Indian friend so I can attend a wedding. They look like so much fun.

They teach Gattaca in schools?? Actually, I have a friend who watched "Moon" in a college science class because it's about extracting helium isotopes from the moon which is something NASA has been looking into for some years now.

Yup, mostly making us focus on the topics of DNA. :)

Requiem for a Dream is one of my favourite films. Not sure if it's considered underrated or not, but most people over here haven't seen it.

Oh, I completely agree. It's M.Knight's best in my opinion. I actually prefer it remains underrated so that it stays as disassociated with his other films as humanly possible.

Drop Dead Gorgeous is the first thing that comes to mind. Quite possibly the most under-appreciated comedy of all time.

Ah. Another one of my obsessions: M. Night movies!!! Can't wait for "The Last Airbender"
Anyone heard of "Everything is Illuminated"? That's a great movie. Few people I know have seen it. (Then again, I don't get out much...)

It was nominated for a few of British indie awards and Sundance, but nothing major. Which is rather unfortunate.

Scarletwebslingr, I loved loved loved Moon! I wish it had gotten more attention because it was far more brilliant than District 9 or most of the best picture nominees last year.
One move that is extremely underrated but is one of the best I've ever seen is The Fall. It's almost unknown but so grand and epic. They filmed all over the world and used no cgi. A.I. Artificial Intellegence is another underatted scifi. It was very unappreciated but its a great Spielberg film. Another one that I think deserves a lot more attention is Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark. Such a brilliant experimental film. It made me cry so hard and that very rarely happens. I could go on like this forever but those are in my opinion remarkable films that go almost unnoticed.

The ending of A.I. was pretty bizarre, but I too feel that one was greatly underrated. And on that note, I thought the Animatrix was better than the actual films.

You can find Firefly for cheap these days and I'd definitely recommend it.
I think "The Last Samurai" is underrated.

I wasn't crazy about Unbreakable... not sure what it was but it just didn't sit right with me overall. Sixth Sense was my favorite of his flicks. Lady in the Water was barf.
I really liked 'The Last Samurai', maybe because I really enjoy Asian epics, but the acting and all was great I thought.

In pretty much every school I have gone to they play it at the end of the year in every class. Because of that I've now watched it about 10 times! I guess teachers just think that it's a good movie. xD

Here are some movies I think are underrated, I apologize if some are not
Kingpin
Falling Down
The Professional
Mallrats (even though it has become very popular after it was released on video)
Dark City
Orgazmo
Fraility
The Big Lebowski ( I do not know if this one is considered underrated )
Bulletproof w/ Adam sandler and Damon Waynes
In Bruges (again don't know if this is also considered underrated )
That is all that I can thin of right now I will have to look through my DVD collection and see if I can find some more, and as you can see I love watching movies

:agree: I thought unbreakable was interesting, but it was a "watch one time" for me. Most of his movies are a "one time" for me (I wish I hadn't seen lady in the water period ) Except, sixth sense. I really loved that one, tho I didn't see it when all the hype was up about it. I don't even like scary movies normally. (I closed my eyes a lot, some people said that was cheating :look:) The suspense isn't what made it great for me, it was the acting the the storytelling.

Serenity, anyone?
Wait, wait - there are people that don't think Serenity is awesome?
Second the motion for watching Firefly, by the way. Arguably better than Buffy in terms of the Whedonverse.
What about Ed Wood? Edward Scissorhands gets all the love, but to me, Ed Wood is easily the best of the Burton/Depp movies. I'd also nominate Depp's Don Juan DeMarco.
It's not underrated on its own, but in terms of the Coen Bros filmography, people tend to ignore the riotously funny The Hudsucker Proxy.

I agree about Ed Wood!! I have it on VHS! Serenity isn't underrated because people didn't like it, it's underrated because many people just have no idea what it is or that it's based on an amazing series. I definitely liked Firefly over Buffy (I've met Oz/Seth Green by the way) but only because I prefer sci-fi to fantasy.
I'm not sure if this is considered Horror or comedy but "Slither" with Nathan Fillion was a really good time. I mean, some scenes are pretty disgusting but all in the name of fin.
Also "El Mariachi" was fan freaking tastic!

Slither was pretty funny. The mayor (Gregg Henry, who was also a sheriff in Firefly, and appeared as a character in Castle) is a riot, and for some reason, Jenna Fischer's accent always makes me laugh - "there's a 'skeeter in here that's drivin' me bonkers!"
That was a pretty cool vid, by the way. I love the line about "special hell." For some reason, I feel like the dude needs to work in the line, "curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"
El Mariachi is indeed good. That whole trilogy was strong, even if Once Upon a Time in Mexico felt a little bloated compared to the other two.
Sticking to the growing Nathan Fillion list, I'll add the heartbreakingly bittersweet Waitress. Andy Griffith steals every scene he's in, and he even manages to steal one that he's not in.
I'm also a huge, huge fan of the criminally under-seen Stardust. The look on De Niro's face completely gives away that he had a blast playing a cross-dressing pirate.

In Bruges is a hilarious movie, although you have to know a little bit about the U.K. to get some of the jokes and the accents might be a bit thick.
The Big Lebowski is definitely not underrated, its pretty popular actually.
My entry is Airheads. That a great movie with a lot of stars.

I absolutely love Stardust!
There needs to be a support group for people who've banged their heads against the wall trying to get other people to see it. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard "oh, that looked like a kids movie, so I didn't bother," I'd have a big honkin' bag of nickels. The ghost brothers never fail to make me laugh.

You know, I wasn't familiar with the source material beforehand, so I went into The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen not knowing what to expect, and I did enjoy it. In the hindsight, it was infinitely more accessible than the comics. Maybe not as compelling, but way more accessible.
Good call on The Ghost and the Darkness. It was in the $40 million range, so not too shabby, but I had to look it up before realizing what it was. I'll see your Val Kilmer and raise you the highly-regarded but under-seen Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, which could also be called the first great movie of Robert Downey, Jr's comeback.

I think I liked Goal 2 a lot because they managed to retain most of the same characters and story lines. It was a little bit too predictable though. Goal 3 from what I hear was abysmal and didn't even carry on the storyline. I hope they finish the series properly someday.

"The House of the Devil" was an excellent horror film fashioned after the occult/satanic themed horrors of the late 70's and early 80's (think "The Exorcist"). Ebert Roper gave it a positive review, surprisingly enough.

Just found this thread, its a great one.
I 100% agree with Ed Wood and Unbreakable.
Ed Wood is by far the best Tim Burton movie and Unbreakable is I think the perfect superhero origin movie.
I also saw Moon this year, and it currently sits at number 10 on all the film I saw from 2009. Great scifi flick.
Some underrated:
Last year Drag Me To Hell. If you loved Evil Dead you will love this.
The Fantastic Mr. Fox, was the best animation movie of 2009 imo.
Burn After Reading, a Cohen borthers movie witch I tough passed pretty much under the radar of lots of people. Not a big fan of Clooney, but man was he great in that movie.
City of Amber, cute Scifi post apocalypse movie.
And one who might be underrated by younger generation. Citizen Kane, still easily pass the test of time after almost 60 years.

I have seen a fair few films in my day and have soft spots for some almost unknown films... I think it's a shame good films sometimes go unwatched for various reasons (for example The Shawshank Redemption went down like a led balloon at the cinemas but word of mouth through the video market made the film known to the extent it is today) so what are movies would make your list... that way that won't be forgotten and left on the shelf to be unwatched... forever... dum dum dum... ok slightly overdramtic but you know what I mean. *
1. The Legend of 1900 - About a musical genius that abandoned on a boat at the turn of the century and raised by a worker in the engine room, and his life on the boat as the years go by.
2. Restless Natives - About 2 youths in Edinburgh that rob tourist buses... only to become local hero's and tourist icons... much to the displeasure of the police.
This goes back to my childhood for me, I remember lot of night with a big smile on my face watching this movie.
3. Saving Grace - About a retired old fashioned middle class woman who is left with a load of debt when her husband dies and going to lose everything if she doesn't come up with a lot of money quickly so she becomes a drug dealer.
Funny look at culture in the UK and perceptions surrounding people and why they do what they do.
4. GreenFingers - based on a true story - About a prisoner in an open prison in the UK that finds he has a talent for cultivating flowers... much to the bemusement of the other prisoners, especially when some are ordered to get involved too.
A really good feel good film, well worth watching.
5. Toy Soldiers (not to be confused with Small Soldiers) - About a group of rebel kids in a boarding school that fight back when the school is taken over by terrorists thinking they can get to influential parents through their kids.
Another film that takes me back, and is good today as it was back then.
*all the movies/films listed here are in my personal collection
