View Full Version : Epic Mickey - Video Game Concept Art
First, some back story. Back in December 2008 concept artwork for a video game in development, "Epic Mickey" (working title), was shown to staff of Gamasutra, an game development industry blog. This was being shown by Warren Spector's (Deus Ex, Theif) Junction Point Studios, an Austin, TX based, and Disney owned company. Junction Point has yet to release any games since it's inception but they must have shown something promising for Disney to purchase them in 2007 - they are now a part of Disney Interactive.
Back in Early 2008, EGM reported the following rumor: "Word is that Spector's new Disney project will be a platformer looking to compete with a certain pesky plumber. And who's big enough to take on Nintendo's star? Only the mouse himself!"
Spector later posted on his blog: "My team and I have been working hard on our own and (get ready for the cool factor to go way up) in collaboration with folks from Disney Feature Animation and Pixar."
And last night, blog Superannuation dug up some (leaked?) concept art - as well as this morning posted further info reguarding the project found on some ones resume:

Whoa this looks awesome!
Why is there a Big Al robot? Don't get me wrong, everything looks cool. I'm just a bit confused
My estimation based on the concept art is that there was some sort of disastrous event at WDW - an invasion of some sort? - And the result was that some of the animatronics were badly damaged (thus the zombified yet robotic versions of Big Al, Goofy, etc.) Only time will tell - I've done a ton of digging on developer and artists blogs for any bits of info and they are very sparse and vague so far. Hopefully with this leak we'll get some new info soon. I can say that as of 2 months ago in an interview the project was still being actively developed, as well as that resume post from June 09 saying he was working on it from June 09 - Present. It still being in production is a good sign, usually with leaks like this it means the project got shelved but that doesn't appear to be the case.

That is amazing. I was wondering what the plot would be and how much would be related to the theme parks, but once I saw the Big Al AA it seems pretty clear that Disney Parks will play a huge role in this game. I'm a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts so this should be interesting to follow.

 While I am very impressed with the concept artwork and premise, I must say I would be shocked to see Disney allow any release that puts such a morbid slant on their IP.
Here's a teaser for next month's Game Informer that will have Epic Mickey as a cover story.

Salvador Dali meets Disney...Hey when they two were alive they did collaborate. The Oswald Rocket in Tomorrowland looks cool!
The issue has been cover has been released - here are the details:
The November cover is indeed, Disney Epic Mickey, coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii from Junction Point and Disney Interactive Studios.
This issue is the first of our highly anticipated redesign that subscribers should be receiving around October 12th.
There are a number of other highlights, including a Skate 3 first-look, an in-depth, seven-page report on the relationship between Hollywood and video games, interviews with executives from all three console manufacturers, and much, much more.
But the biggest news is our expanded coverage online that is available to all gameinformer.com visitors. Starting at 4PM CST today we will unveil the first companion piece to the magazine: an exclusive video interview with Warren Spector about his relationship with Mickey Mouse, including a portion of his giant Disney memorabilia collection that is housed at Junction Point. We will also have a photo-blog chronicling many of the outstanding pieces in his collection hitting at the same time.
This is just the beginning of our month of Mickey madness that will unfold over the next three plus weeks. So be sure to watch our Disney Epic Mickey landing page over the following month.
We don’t want to spoil what’s to come, but we have some amazing things in store, including screenshots, animations, and tons of concept art and music.
Watch for the issue in your mailbox over the coming weeks and make sure to come to gameinformer.com for the latest updates and news.
Oh yeah, and one last thing. All GI covers from here on out will feature a full wrap-around cover. Here is the Mickey cover in all its glory. The best part, and the reason we switched to these, is that the subscriber address label and the UPC will be on the back so it no longer clashes with our wonderful cover art.

That looks awesome! Why only for the Wii? (The only system I dont own.)
I'm sure the developer has their own reasoning, but I see it as a positive. If you build it specifically for one system, you can optimize it to it's fullest extent, rather than build it so that it is easily portable between platforms with tacked on features for each console (a bump in graphics, or the additional of motion controls that feel shoe horned in).
I guess we'll have to see how the game plays to see the WHY of the Wii Exclusivity, but I'm sure it's market share was a contributing factor.
Good news for you, the Wii just price dropped to $199.99, you can pick them up used for even less.

I'm really sad this is only coming out on the Wii platform. I love my Wii, but not for games like this, you know? I think something of this magnitude would be better suited on an X-Box or Playstation (:cross:) platform.
Epic Mickey is a tale about the 'forgotten' Disney stars: the rides, the characters, the lesser-known cartoons. When nobody any longer cares, they are cast into a dark void; a forgotten world of broken machines and bitter personalities - a bit like Sid's bedroom in Toy Story, but without the friendly furnishings.
This forgotten world is run by Oswald the Rabbit. He was Disney's first creation, made long before Mickey Mouse, and his jealousy of the newcomer has fermented for years. Now, finally, Oswald is ready for revenge.
He unleashes The Phantom Blot to wipe out Mickey and his cartoon world. The Blot pollutes the Disney universe with sticky black ink that makes colours run and fade (as seen on the Game Informer cover), so it's up to Mickey to restore peace and order. And this is where his tools come in.
Mickey has to draw and scribble his way through levels, mending broken bridges by applying the right colour paint or peering through walls after applying thinner. He can even clear rubble from his path by erasing parts of the world.
Our source told us Epic Mickey is a game about thinking and artwork - laterally considering your environment in order to overcome puzzles.
On top of that is a healthy dose of exploration, plus Mickey will be getting "his first makeover in years". "That's why no one's seen his face yet," our source explained, "But he's far more retro than you've seen him for years."

Ok so from reading the spoiler, the game sounds kind of basic to me which I guess is what I should expect for something made for the Wii.
Please tell me there will be more to it than just coloring.

Haha, well I'll hold judgement on that until we see some actual gameplay, or at least in-game screen shots. I'd like to think you're over simplifying it but who knows...
I was kind of getting more of a Mario Sunshine vibe from the description... I guess we'll see.

Hahaha, I feel exactly the opposite. I'm so bored with this overly clean version of Mickey we've seen for ages now. Disney letting him get back to his mischievous roots restores my faith in the company as well as becomes the driving force behind my interest in this game.

I agree. Recently I've been watching more classic mickey cartoons and it's bittersweet because I LOVE how he use to be- he wasn't "bad" but he wasn't all goody-goody either. That's what I'm hoping for in this game.
The last Mickey game I thought did Mickey justice was Mickey Mania. So I'm really hoping it mimics that game in the sense that it draws its inspiration from the classic cartoons.

We'll see... there's still the whole "Playstyle Matters" thing, and from what I understand, based on how you play, is how Mickey will begin to appear. Be helpful and rebuild the city - become Hero Mickey... just destroy everything in your way - become Evil Mickey... or something in between.

Very cool controller that will be released with the game... also in pic are the controllers being released with the TRON video game :)
http://i45.tinypic.com/m7t3wn.jpg
While it may be rather gauche to use epic twice in a row, I think it’s justified when talking about the new controllers Disney & Performance Designed Products have announced. This week at E3, Nintendo showed off Disney’s Wii-exclusive, Epic Mickey, and Disney showed off its new nunchuk & controller stand that you can purchase and use with the game. The nunchuk is shaped as a paintbrush, while the controller stand/charger is shaped like one of the antagonists of the game. These peripherals are really cool, but not as cool as the TRON controllers they announced at the same time.
The controllers, in TRON fashion, are black-clad, with grips on the sides, and blue LEDs running up and down the controllers. And they look beautiful. It looks like the PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers might be wired, but I still think they’re great. No price has been announced for the Epic Mickey-themed controllers, but the TRON controllers will all retail for $50… eventually.
If you’re in the market for a new controller, and don’t mind playing an extra $20 for style, then you should definitely check out one of these TRON controllers. [via Siliconera]

:agree: I haven't been able to really catch up with this thread, but I'm pretty sure the video where it discusses the gameplay has been brought up by now- kind of like what you were describing. And if they do what they say (base the good, evil and neutral mickey on mickey's attitude in past cartoons) I really can't see them messing it up. Mickey was not always the nicest mouse on the block. He threw potatoes at birds, wanted to be a show off when putting out the fire, and lied to a bear that a gun wasn't loaded. It will be interesting to see what he does in epic mickey when playing it "mean mouse" style

Found out today that the classic trouble maker scrapper style mickey has been removed from the game thanks to feedback from a focus group that will probably never play the game anyway. Now when you take the "destructive" path, Mickey just takes on a blurry/smudgy appearance instead.
I am very turned off by this direction and wrote a note on the developer's facebook page concerning my disappointment. :(

I can't wait for this game to come out! It's sort of funny that I'll be at Walt Disney World when it's released but I'll definitely have to pre-order one so it's waiting when I get home. The only thing is that I'm a big World of Warcraft player, and their new expansion will be out around that time too!!! I'll have to balance my time between both games...good thing I don't have kids, and my hubby works! Sleep is a crutch anyway right? LOL.

i dont know if the game plot has been mention here im too lazy to read through the post  but im just gunna rant on about it
[quote]A long time ago, the sorcerer Yen Sid created a Disney theme park themed pen-and-paper world called the Cartoon Wasteland for his forgotten and rejected creations, held in an intricate model on a table, and accessible through a mirror. Mickey, who steps through a mirror from his home and finds himself inside Yen Sid's study, sees the model, and waits until Yen Sid is gone before going back to take another look at it. Fiddling with it, Mickey accidentally spills paint and paint thinner onto the model. Hearing Yen Sid approaching, Mickey quickly cleans up and flees back to his home. However, the spill of paint and paint thinner creates a being called the Phantom Blot, who attempts to take control of the Wasteland from its first resident and Mickey's older half-brother - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Oswald and the other residents of the Cartoon Wasteland fight against the Phantom Blot, but he eventually overwhelms them and twists their world into a dark and sinister version of itself, forcing Oswald into hiding.
Years later, Mickey has forgotten his past transgression until the mirror in his home comes to life and pulls him into the Cartoon Wasteland. Oswald, his will lost and twisted by his jealousy of Mickey's rise to fame, has formulated a plan to destroy Mickey. The Mad Doctor works closely with the Blot, creating robotic "Beetleworx", which are strange creatures that consist of combinations of various Disney cartoon characters. He also creates animatronic "buddies" for Oswald, looking like decrepit robotic versions of Mickey's friends, as Oswald wants Mickey's life and popularity for himself. Armed with a magical paintbrush that he managed to pull into the world with him, Mickey must stop the Phantom Blot, gain Oswald's trust and save the Cartoon Wasteland.[quote]

Yeah, the game plot had me sold with this game. I love how they are taking so many aspects of "classic Disney" and tying it into this game. I will be shocked (or more like devastated ) if this game doesn't live up to my expectations, because I really can't see how they can go wrong with that plot.

I'm expecting big things from this game and hope it will be as amazing as it looks and as I hope it will be

 Here in New Zealand the Wii games cost the equivalent of over $70 USD, so buying that collector's edition online would be like just buying a normal game, but getting tons of free stuff. :D
Too bad that it wouldn't play on a NZ Wii. :(
As we like to say in the gaming community - Aus/NZ video games are twice the price and a year late :)

Don't worry, we get the occasional gem! The second Pokemon Ranger game for DS (which I haven't actually bought yet ) was released here before the US by a week or so! o: Although to be fair, the price was the usual double the US price. xD

Thanks for posting this! I was recently placing an Amazon order and couldn't resist thought I am (at that point) going to be working on 3 other video games :look:... and probably getting ready for finals,. Oh.. what have I done! No matter.. it will be awesome! Though some people argue over the Wii, I still think it's a great system. Plus, it is so affordable compared to other systems like Xbox or PS3 (though I understand the advantages of these platforms and own a PS3 as well myself). I still like to buy certain games for the Wii specifically like the LEGO games and such.

Got my copy early - first level is like a weird mashup of small world and jungle cruise. Camera controls are a little goofy but otherwise it looks amazing and is really fun. The paint/thinner is limited to certain designated areas, so you can't just erase ANYTHING, but it's a neat mechanic, lots of hidden stuff. After the first boss you end up on main street which acts as a hub for all the various worlds with side quests and missions.
In a word; awesome

Being a Disney fan, I loved it. It was like walking into a weird, twisted version of Disney run by weirdos. Bringing Oswald into the fold like this was genius and very well done. I cant wait to play through again.
As a gamer, it infuriated me. The camera issues were horrible, making some of the last stages very very hard due to not being able to see.
Overall, definitely beats out Kingdom Hearts, which I do love as well. Totally epic.
Now to play through again to get a new ending!

Good to hear that it is a good game. I went to the BX (for those of you not military it's a "department" store on base) to buy it first thing on the 30th and of course they did not have them!!! Overall, definitely beats out Kingdom Hearts, which I do love as well. Totally epic.
Now to play through again to get a new ending!
Great to know. My plan is to start playing mine in the next few days. Now i'm even MORE excited!!

Also, it took me a bit, but I figured out where Walt's apartment was hidden in the game!

This game is awesome!!! Just started playing it and any disney fan should play it. Even if you aren't a disney fan the gameplay is great. The camera could use a lot of work but you will get used to it.
