I found a comic on eBay (it's as old as I am!) for a pretty good deal, so I bought it to use for this custom. This was extremely fun to make and was a nice break from painting. I bought a few other comics to make a series of these.

Ooooh... much as it pains me to see a comic cut up, this does look really cool.

If it's any consolation, I felt wrong cutting it up without reading it first. So I sat there reading the whole thing before I could start.

That's something at least. :D

Wait, did you say that comic is as old as you are? That looks like the cover to one of the Disney Comics issues, from the late 80s, early 90s. Dude, how old ARE you? Keeping in mind you're about to make me feel incredibly old...

I was born 1986. This comic was apparently from 1987.

Cut the pieces out. Use decoupage medium and lightly coat the back of the pieces them glue them where you want them.

A helpful tip. Cover the figure entirely in pieces you don't care about. This will be the background layer to fill in the blank space between pieces. The important pieces will be put on top of the background layer. In my case I actually used another comic and by the time I was done, all the Donald pieces were on top and you couldn't really make out any of the details from the other comic. ;)

This one is awesome! I love it! I need to think of a cool way to do the figure besides paint. It really works, and I like that you kept the hands visible. Really cool!!!

Thanks, guys.

Another good tip for this. Don't be afraid to dip your fingers in the glue. I found simply glueing the back of the pieces didn't work as well as applying it to both sides with my fingers and using my thumb and finger nail to smooth out all the pieces. When you are trying to get the pieces to lay flat, you would think pushing from the center towards the outside would be the best way. However, I've found the best way to get the pieces to lay flat is to, with a little glue on your finger, trace the edge of the pieces.

I'm really looking forward to starting the next Comic Character. :)

Good luck on those -- a lot of 'em haven't made too many comic appearances. I don't think Stitch ever has, except maybe in Disney Adventures Magazine.

I've already found all of them. The hardest part is going to be able to find Goofy in his classic attire (I think I found one on eBay though). I'm not a big fan of using the characters in safari, astronaut, clown, etc. outfits for stuff like this. I'd rather it be the "default look" as I call it.

I found a comic book of Stitch.

I decided that I am going to take a Park Series box and decoupage it to make it look like it is a 3" box from my Comic Characters series. :)

Sledge, a few questions.

[1] You mentioned that you put glue on both sides of the paper pieces, was that just for the first layer or also for the top layer as well? If so, did you completely coat each piece or just the edges?

[2] What kind of glue did you use?

[3] I'm assuming so, but did you take the arms off to wrap the figure?

Just noticed this today. Oops.

1) Both sides of the paper on every piece I put on. The glue on the bottom makes it stick and the glue on the top helps it lay smooth since the paper is soggy and less crisp and helps protect the figure from scratching. Did you ever do paper mache? It's very similar to this.

2) You can use any type of glue and just water it down slightly, but I use decoupage medium. It's about the same price as any other glue and it is really only glue that has already been watered down for you. After my piece has been put together I paint a layer of the medium over the entire figure to seal it. The texture isn't smooth like paint and you can still feel some of the different layers.

3) I took the arms off and wrapped from the wrist all the way to the knobs the go into the sockets. I then took a razor and cut away the paper on the knobs to allow it to fit into the sockets. You have to be really carefully because if you take too much off you'll be able to see it. If you take too little off they won't fit right.

Also, I don't think I've mentioned it before, but avoid pictures with a lot of white on them. If it is a characters face or it shows the whole white object/character it works, but I noticed with Donald that I would put a picture of his whole body and then use other pieces to cover up everything except for his face. Parts of his white body would then stick out in spots and it would sometimes look like I had forgot to cover parts of the white blank figure. If you use other colors you obviously won't get this problem. If you must use white make sure to pay special attention to which parts can be seen after you've put other layers on.

I did the decoupage thing on a desk chair once - would love to try it on these but they're SO much smaller than the chair I worked with.

What's the best method for taking apart the vinyls? Just pull on the arms and head? Any tricks - I'm afraid to break mine!

Sledge
08-19-2009, 08:22 PM
It's pretty impossible to break the 3". Just give the arms and head a good tug and they'll pop right off. I'm more afraid to try this on the 9", though I've seen several people do it.

BigAl_PT
08-19-2009, 09:08 PM
Yeah, pulling the heads and arms off are easy. And since the figures are vinly, I don't think they would really break like you're thinking.

phino
08-20-2009, 12:02 AM
hmm, so u can dismantle them without breaking them? can someone confirm that they've done this before with the blank 3" and 9" vinylmations? thanks.

I have popped the heads off my 3" blanks with no problems. :)

Ive done it with regular 3" also.
