View Full Version : Price Guide?

Anyone else think that it's high time for a Price Guide for VMs?
For example: I'm looking for a Kermit from Park Series 1 still, and of course, I'm cheap. Looking at eBay, I see that there are four singles available, current bids are at $15, $17.50, $35 and $80 (with a pin). That doesn't really help now does it? Looking at the finished items, I see SOLD prices from $40 to $60, without doing too much math, I'd reckon that the average sale is about $50.
Seem logical?
Anyone want to help?
Here's the current prices:

Even if we had a price guide, I would think it would have to be well-maintained because prices are going to fluctuate often. For me, a Completed Listings search on eBay is the best way to determine true market value. It's only when an item is so scarce that it never appears on eBay that some sort of price reference would be helpful.

I also like the idea. it will definately be hard to maintain it, but at least it give people a rough idea of what the prices are and if they are getting a good deal. i missed out on the park 1 and have been trying to get them, but watching ebay all day is tough.

This really is a great idea, but an incredibly difficult one. This would be very useful to a lot of people though, so if you and a few others are able to manage it, I think it would be really successful.

Would be hard to do. What would you base it on? Ebay basically gets what someone is willing to pay so not realistic prices. Changes on any given auction so if you do this good luck. I love the idea however. I had to buy Kermit on ebay and I paid $60. It was the only one up for auction at the time and I WANTED IT. If you guys choose to do it I will help anyway I can just let me know!

eBay sold items seem to be reasonable - I don't really see any other outlet for a large number of sales of singles anywhere else, but I'm totally willing to add in prices from forum sales, etc. Remember, it's just a guide, not a bible. I've done this before for other items that are actually far more volatile (think collectible game cards), and it seems to work out OK. Also, by taking ALL of the same items sold on eBay over a period of time, you eliminate the "wild" bids, such as the $60 bid you mention above. When you average out the prices you see what they're really selling for, but I hear what you're saying.
Prices wouldn't have to be updated more than once a month...obviously I'm really only interested in the "mainstream" Vinylmations, perhaps adding in the cast exclusives, but trying to do the 1 of 1s would be impossible.
I'm also not interested in the 9" at all, so someone else would have to step up for those.
I also wouldn't bother with doing any of the CURRENT series (except the chaser) until they out of print, simply because if you can still get them in a box, they really aren't that collectible yet. Sure you might pay a small premium to make sure the one or two that you want out of a series you get, but until it goes out of print, you can always get them for just about retail (or cheaper, I looked up one of the Park Series 2 that I own, and a couple of auctions closed at BELOW $10).
Here's a new one for you:
Series: Park #1
Artist: Jo Ling Yap
Figure Name: "Fireworks"
# Total items sold: 11
# Items Unsold: 1
Highest Sale Price: $38.98
Lowest Sale Price: $22.54
Average Sale Price: $28.18
Unsold Item: $20 starting bid, $4.95 shipping.

Very cool. I added the latest into the first post as well. I think when you have a new one you should post it in the thread to draw attention to it, then also edited it into the first post so people can find the information easily.
If this proves to be popular this might work well as a feature on the front pages of VinylNation.net.

Added the Chasers from all three series. Not surprisingly Balloon is the Alpha Dog here, but Gold from Series 2 is kind of a dog.
I would also welcome reports of actual sales (and I'll check the Trading/Selling forum sooner or later).

I also think this is a good idea... but a hard one to do. Like anything else collectible... prices go up and down all the time. Also... look around for the one your looking for. SEARCH for the best deal. Dont jump on the 1st one you see.... shop around.... and also... just be happy. Set a base for the one your looking for. Im willing to pay $$ and no more for it. Enjoy.

This is amazing. I offered somebody a price on a Vinylmation and was met with a rude, flabbergasted reply shocked that I would offer so little for a highly sought after Vinyl. I had no idea what the going rate was, so this will be a lifesaver and perhaps start a few of us new to trading / buying off on a better foot.

This thread is a really old thread that seems to have been bumped recently, The individual who first created this thread did so over a year or so ago and has not logged on since 01/04/2010. Any data new folks find in this thread would be pretty old...The best way to go about it would be do a "Completed Search" on ebay for the particular item your searching for to see what previous bidders bid on them, also as HauntedCollector (http://vinylnation.net/forums/member.php?505-HauntedCollector) put together a site called http://vinylmation.info and it looks like it hasn't been updated since March 2010. At least its a little more current than this physical thread...Its not easy keeping up to par with the secondary market prices as any given day is having anywhere between 150-300 items listed with I am sure more coming from the recently released or upcoming released products. Hope this helps...

There was mention of this a long time ago also, and I thought someone posted this within the boards...It may have been you but would have to do some searching on the specific post. Pinpics had something similar where people could put within their own profile their wants "Members Wanting" or their trades"Members Trading", I believe for some time what was happening was that some folks who wanted to get a higher value would make numerous profiles and put it under their wants to make the pin seem more valuable because more people wanted it. Also, There is another part called "Coolness" where some unscrupulous people would make a pin have a very high rating to make it look more valuable. Unfortunately, When you open up something like this to the masses you always have a small number of people trying to exploit it as much as possible for their own gains. I know this sounds negative on the idea, and its really a good idea to have something like this unfortunatley having a completely open system probably wouldn't be the best route for the above reasons.
Also, How would you differentiate Person A or Person B who notices the same item go for lets say $125 and puts in the same data on your website (Look at this on a bigger scale with 50 members or more doing the same thing) It could artificially boost up the average price of an item, and performing a "Completed Search" on ebay would show the last two weeks for what an item went for. I know you this can be done easily with a database and a primary key for example (i.e. Ebay's Item Number), although ebay may have some issues. How would you also check for accuracy to see what an item actually went for compared to the database? These are just some top of the head questions I am throwing out there, and in no way I am trying to put the idea down, I think its a great idea these are just some things I think of off the top of head.
The best avenue I could think of is either having one person doing this, or having a group of people doing this that constantly updates the database with this information. It would definitely help with some of the questions above having an individual or close knit group performing this fuction. Just remember (More for the newbie), What something went for last year doesn't mean it will be the same this year. Also, An average price over many years or even a single year doesn't represent the price an item may go for today...High or Low...
Great idea emesen...

I agree it's a good idea, but it's going to take a ton of work to keep up with! Also with a price guide of this nature, you need to determine the timing of the updates - will it be daily, weekly, monthly, or hourly? What is it based on and who decides? Include shipping or not? Condition also matters, assume all are Mint and with cards, 9" are in undamaged and unopened boxes. See, it's complicated already! It will take a village...the village on here!

I think VM are becoming so much like comic books. People should be wary of paying lots for an older vinyl and focus on buying new ones. Who is to say you could still get a lot of money for these in a few years. This makes me think of comic collecting so much. I think I will stick to buying newer ones.

I usually do a search of completed auctions on Ebay to get a sense of the going rate for a certain vinyl, and take the average. As mentioned before Haunted Collector did a great job on a price guideline, but updating it is a full time job with prices changing all the time. Just a little while ago, prices weren't that crazy. But it seems like the last month or two, prices have justed jumped.

I could definitely support you in this endeavor, but you would just have to lurk ebay and the ebay thread hardcore to do it, if you're up to the challenge, more power to ya! :) Also the prices in the trade section are obviously cheaper so you'd have to lurk there too and find a median ground :P

Great idea, but way too much work. You would need a team to keep up with the changes. Plus condition, box shape, card location etc. Add the fact that disney is coming out with vinyls quicker and not as LE. You would need your own site like KBB but for vinyls. Since this is all still so now, we may need to wait. I have only been collecting for a short period and I can even see the price changes on ebay. What I wouldn't consider before now is a great deal. I believe that bubble or dam red ballon needs to pop or atleast come down a little.

As an FYI... I've begun working on the wikia website for vinylmation, and we're working on adding approximate price values based on what figures are selling for here and on eBay... we're just starting now. I actually just finished the Park 1's today, so if anyone is interested in doing some research and sending me price lists let me know... Here's a link to what we're doing. And if there's any other info you'd like to see on the pages let me know that too and I'll see what I can do.

I have been doing my own tracking form, that I use to update aftermarket prices monthly. It takes a lot of work (about 2 hours a day) to keep it updated, but it has really helped to set a baseline for some of the VM's I'm looking to buy. Yeah it stinks to watch the ones I want go to other homes, but if they seem overpriced based on my spreadsheet, then I just don't think it's worth it to pull the trigger on them.

As most have said, this is a great idea but very time consuming. One thing about ebay though, you have to factor in the seller's feedback. I feel like a new seller with 0 feedback may possibly have the item sell for lower as some may not want to take the risk of purchasing.

I checked that ebay listing after reading your thread. There's no way I would pay for that list. First of all, his feedback score isn't all that great. Secondly, the prices of many of the vinyls has and does fluctuate so much that it would be tough to keep an accurate listing. Lastly, what the prices based on? So many ebay sellers inflate the prices of vinyls...check some of the "buy it now" listings and look at the prices that are listed. Look at this listing for the Wall-E & Eve set:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Wall-E-Eve-Vinylmation-Set-LE-500-MIB-/110701818089?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c657b0e9#ht_771wt_3002
Really? $1,200...
I think when trying to determine the value of vinyl you can't count ebay out, but you have to consider that many ebay sellers aren't really collectors...they're just trying to make a buck of the real collectors. To make an accurate list of values you would have to consider what members are paying on the Trade/Sell thread here. I think that would give a much better idea of what many vinyls are worth. However, I don' think that there is a way to track or gather that data from the forums.

Ok so I messaged the seller and he said he would give us all a free current guide of the park series current as of today in hopes to show he is a legit seller. He said he has compiled the actual sale prices from ebay over the last couple weeks and updates it weekly. He is a collector on the side but mostly at local trade shows and in DL. In the email he included each guide as a PDF.
Link SHould work now. (https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0UKa2wDVwFFM2E2NmVjZTktY2JlMy00MWI1LWE2M GMtMGJlNmQ4ZjMwMmNj&hl=en_US&authkey=CPLM8fEO)
Hmm...not sure what's so legit about it?
Park 1 Creepy Wallpaper @ $86.00 !?!?!
Park 1 ELP @ $161.00 !?!?!
Sorry, but I'll stick to the free advice.

Surely if you only took into account items that have actually sold on ebay, you would get a good idea of what people are prepared to pay?

Like others have stated its a good idea but its ebay. I dont know how you can even determine the price of the old ones other than how much others are willing to pay for them. I have regularly seen all park 1's and urban 1's sell for at least 50 bucks or more but it all depends on the what people are looking to for to complete their own collections and willing to pay.

I think eBay is the best way to generate value. While there are other secondary sources such as web sites, message boards, shops, etc, it's the best "collection" of data. The fact that you can track something over the past 30 days also helps.
Being a pin person, we have LONGED looked at ebay as the source for values. What was the last price that someone paid for something, what have the last (X amount) gone for? You can't get that data anywhere else.
When dealing w/ values, I prefer ebay. Not saying it's the ONLY way, it's just what I prefer. Has that cost me a trade or 30? Probably. But when someone is valuing their vinyl at 100, and I see it's on ebay at 75, why would I also value their vinyl at 100?

I have now made a price guide website which I think may be helpful to a lot of people on here. I don't think posting links on here is allowed though, is it?

Could you PM me the link? I track every vinyl sold every day, and do monthly price guides, so I'd love to see how things match up. Thanks.

This same goal can be achieved by using the completed auctions tab on ebay.
