Really helpful thanks :) I tried after I read it and did a linus van pelt custom. his face is kind of a failure but it's not so bad. the tips helped a lot.

The right materials will get you 50% of the way there, but the rest is skill and practice makes perfect. I don't know anyone who was smooth and steady with their brush the first time they painted something. Using a brush is pretty different than using a pen, and takes getting used to. Each figure you do will be better than the last. The stuff I did when I started out like 5 years ago are pretty bad.
