Strange thing happend to me this Saturday, went to DL and of course the only 9¨ vinyls most of the stores have are Tiki Mouse and Bowling pin. Around 5 or 6 in the evening we finished riding Space Mountain and we decide to check out the startrader store. I make my way to the vinyls when the first things that catch my eye sitting on the shelf are a 9¨ Robot Mickey and Mortimer but only one of each so I grab both and buy them. I just find it weird that they were there to begin with. I wanted robot mickey so I'm glad for that! And I'm contemplating keeping Mortimer or possibly seeing if I can trade him for one of the few 3¨ Park 1's I need or maybe for a different 9¨ like crossroads, I dont know.
Also does anyone have any info on the relevence of the Mortimer figure design? I know the backstory of the name but the actual design doesnt mesh yet and I couldnt find any prior thread on this site that talked about it. I guess if I understand the concept of the design better it might sway me to keep it for sure.
I know that sometimes stock might be hidden in a warehouse and when found gets sent out but considering that the 9¨ Urban 1 figures came out back around March I thought it was a cool find!

It is a really cool and lucky find! Congrats!!
It does happen that some stores randomly clean out the backstage area and find items that they have long been out of stock on that got pushed behind or buried, so while it is quite the unexpected find, it is lucky for that 1 person who finds them!!

Fully awesome! =) Like Mouseman74 said, they probably were clearing their inventory, because I go about every week, and the past three or four times I've gone, I've checked out the Emporium, Disneyana, Star Trader, and World of Disney. All I've seen of the Urban 9''s are the Tiki Mickey and Bowling Pin. =o

I found a Mortimer 2 weeks ago at little art of disney store beside uptown jewelers MK. I thought it was very strange too that it was there and the only one. The box was fine except the clear plastic on box was dirty so it probably was buried in back somewhere. I know I was very excited and bought it real fast.
I too would like to know the art concept behind Mortimer. Maybe I can ask Randy Noble at a signing sometime.

The following information is from Wikipedia
Mortimer Mouse
The most famous character with the name is Mickey Mouse's biggest rival. Mortimer Mouse, Mickey's competition for Minnie's affections, was introduced in the 1936 cartoon short Mickey's Rival. In the comics, this Mortimer was briefly renamed Montmorency (Monty) Rodent (pronounced "Ro-Dawn"), in an attempt to differentiate him from the pre-existing uncle, but the new name did not stick. Mickey's rival was once again called Mortimer in later comics -- and in the animated series Mickey Mouse Works and House of Mouse, where he is known for his catchphrase, "Hot-cha-cha!"
In House of Mouse and Mickey MouseWorks, Mortimer as Mickey's rival is voiced by Maurice LaMarche. As Minnie's boss in Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, he was voiced by Jeff Bennet and speaks in a fancier voice.
Mortimer Mouse occasionally appears in the newest Mickey Mouse show for preschoolers, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the Disney Channel.

I recall watching an old Mickey cartoon where Mortimer mouse was trying to take Minnie away from Mickey. Mickey and Minnie being on apicnic and Mortimer trying to woo her. A bull ends up getting lose and Mortimer only cared to save his own hide and Mickey was the hero in the end ofcourse. That's the only exposure I had to the character Mortimer and the 9¨ figure looks nothing like him. He looks just like Mickey.
At star trader when I purchased the figure the CM ringing me up asked me if I knew the story behind the name Mortimer. I told her I only remember that one cartoon and she then said that the origin of the name was that Walt was originally going to call Mickey, Mortimer. His wife later suggested that Mickey Mouse sounded better and thats supposedly how Mickey's name came to be. It makes sense for the figure because like I mentioned it look like its Mickey himself in the radiation suit however I'm wondering if theres an actual explanation as to why Mickey is in the suit with the Mortimer name tag.

When I searched it one Wikipedia that also came up how Walt originally named Mickey, Mortimer then changed it b/c of his wife.
I too have always wondered why Mickey is wearing a radiation suit
