Universal Studios To Unveil New ‘King Kong’ Attraction In 2010

One of the most legendary movie attractions ever to exist was the King Kong movie ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. Sadly, the attraction and much, much more property was lost in that devastating backlot fire in June of last year.

Now that the fire is a distant memory and Universal has made huge plans to completely makeover the experience for tourists, including the recently-announced Creature From the Black Lagoon stage show, they’re ready to bring the mighty Kong back to the fans.

While the King Kong attraction is making a return, it will not be that classic robotic ape we know so well. Kong is embracing the technologies of today and getting the complete makeover treatment. This time around, the experience will be based on Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong and it will present fans with a groundbreaking 4-D (yeah, 4-D!), multi-sensory experience with mind-blowing effects and Earth’s largest Surround Digital projection system. This already sounds like something that has to be added to my bucket list.

President and Chief Operating Officer Larry Kirzweil had this to say:
"King Kong has been an integral part of Universal Studios Hollywood for decades and, after last year’s fire, we knew he had to be resurrected for our Studio Tour guests. We’re very excited to announce that not only are we re-introducing King Kong, but we’ve completely re-imagined the experience and will incorporate this legendary icon into a truly innovative Studio Tour attraction."

Here’s the King Kong attraction’s description!
In the new attraction, guests will don special glasses as they enter a darkened soundstage aboard the Studio Tour trams and will be transported— via the magic of Surround Digital 3D projection —deep into the dark heart of the world of Skull Island . They’ll survive a close encounter with a swarm of monstrous bats, only to be confronted by the terrifying presence of Kong himself. Suddenly, an enormous, ravenous 35′ tall dinosaur will challenge Kong and guests will feel their trams jolt, roll and shudder as they find themselves caught in the middle of a ferocious showdown between the great ape and the giant lizard. The action will immerse guests in the battle between the two colossal predators.

VERY interesting!

I was actually very impressed that NBC/Universal has decided to rebuild Kong after last summer's fire. I can't wait to see what they do with the show building in terms of specials effects. It does sound like it is going to be all digital, which in terms SHOULD cut back on production time, but I have been wrong before. Thanks for the Post!!

I had heard they would rebuild it, along with the BTTF clock tower (that could just be rumored though) So I was SO glad to catch this online today.
Glad Kong is back in some form, somewhere :)

I missed the fire by a month when I visited last summer. The tour just floated on by the old buildings and didn't really go through those streets.

The construction photos I have seen have really been impressive.

I believe that both Kong AND the T-Rex will be gigantic AAs with 3-D Backgrounds. The bats will probably be a mixture of both AA and 3-D.

Is anyone else suspicious about that fire, especially now we have the new development that a bigger and better Kong is on the way???

Cue the lawsuit...

LMAO!

Ok I saw a video on Yahoo about this part of the ride last night and I have to say it looked super lame. They traded in a giant animatronic Kong for a video screen Kong? Downgrade.

The Today Show did a report on it yesterday, and while they wouldn't show any of the new stuff, it looked pretty bad. They just showed the reporter bumping around in the car with wind and water spitting on him. I've never been to Universal in CA, but I would have thought they could have done better than another 3D movies.

Total cop out. 3D screens can't replace a huge, awesome AA and real scenery and effects in my book.

That is truly horrible and embarrassing that they consider it an upgrade.

Universal fanboys are always talking about how Disney cuts corners by using video screens, but what the heck would you call THIS?

It just looks SO cheap and unimpressive. I mean even the people in the picture are like "Seriously... this is it?"

Oh wow. That is really lame. They should have just redone the old one, not put in stupid 3D screens.

Havent they figured out that most people arent impressed by 3D screens?

the only thing i've got to say is that i applaud universal's effort in modernity...even though 4D and 3D rides are lame...
