I just have to say that I'm pretty annoyed that Disney made the Wine & Dine weekend the last weekend in September instead of the first weekend in October. The weather seems to be just a *little* bit nicer that first weekend of October!

Okay guys, I think I've officially lost it. After talking with a friend this weekend, who is training for a full marathon in March, I now want to do one. :yikes: Have any of you guys ran a full?? The one I found that I would most likely do in the spring is March 18. I wonder if I have enough time to train.....

No full marathonms for me... still have to get a half under mybelt, but that WILL come to pass in 2012!!

You know, just after I post about being annoyed with the Wine & Dine date... DISNEY MOVED IT!!!!   I am SO excited. They moved it to make way for the TOWER OF TERROR 10-MILER!!!!! I really could not be happier about any of this. I'll be running both races!!

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/12/a-towering-new-race-through-the-night/

If you’re a runner, Christmas is coming a little early for you thanks to our runDisney team, which thinks it’s found the perfect gift for you. Open it up by clicking on this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tHNCc7AfZdE

Yep, we’re reviving the popular The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror theme and creating The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend at Walt Disney World Resort in 2012. If you like to have a scary good time when you run, this race will be the perfect weekend much like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K race we last staged at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2009.

This new race, scheduled for Sept. 29, will follow a similar course – through the set of “Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show’’ and past Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat – but features runDisney’s first-ever 10-mile distance that finishes, appropriately enough, near The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction. If you “survive’’ the experience, you’ll be treated to a shiny new medal and a rocking post-race party with your family and friends that features live music, Disney characters and exclusive access to attractions such as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, Star Tours, Toy Story Mania! and, of course, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

The new The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror race is our sixth signature runDisney event and the second nighttime race at Walt Disney World Resort. To make room for it, though, we’re shifting our other nighttime event, the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend, to Nov. 9-10 during the final weekend of the popular Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

Like all runDisney events, the race weekend will feature a variety of events, including a 5K, kid’s races and a Health & Fitness Expo all at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.

Mark your calendars now for Feb. 14. That’s the day you can start registering for the new race at runDisney.com. Should be a “terror-ably’’ good time.

I just read about the Tower of Terror Ten Miler in the Sentinel this morning, lo and behold it's been announced since last week. :bonk: Way to be timely, newspaper.

Now then, hooray!

I  the November date for the Wine and Dine, as there's usually a chill creeping into the air, and I seriously missed having a good Halloween race this year (an AK 5k with no free ticket to MNSSHP = no Halloween race for me :pout:). The Tower of Terror not only sounds awesome, but it'll be an awesome test for that final month of training for the Wine and Dine.

I seriously haven't been this excited about a race calendar since they announced the Wine and Dine (which was just two years ago, but still!).

First Medal of the year!
Ran a 5k on Jan 1 with my friend who just recently started running (we ran a Halloween 5k together back in October
We ran PRs and got treated to pulled pork, black eyed peas and cole slaw as part of the post race eats/ festivities.

Okay...now onto Disney Races:
I was seriously thinking about doing the Wine & Dine this year, but now with the announcement of the TOT 10 miler I am torn between races!
I can't afford to do both since traveling from Ohio is a little costly. I like the time of year for the Wine & Dine better... but it would be a lot of fun to run the innaugural TOT Race.
Anyone have any thoughts on how to choose?

Congrats! I love the medal-biting pose; can't go wrong with a classic!

As for the Disney races, I can say that my big interest in the Wine and Dine was having run the inaugural one. There's something special to me about being in the first-ever event, you know? Of course, I think both these races will be great, but the inaugural ToT Ten Miler is probably how I'd go. :o

Anyone remember the old ToT race? I think it was a 10k, but I can't think of it off hand.

So who is going to be racing this weekend at WDW? I'm just doing the 5k, doctor's orders, but my mom is coming down to do the Donald and one half of the new Chip and Dale Relay!

The Tower of Terror is so exciting! I thought the only long race I was going to be able to get to do this year was the Wine and Dine so another in the later half of the year is exciting!

But the race I'm looking forward to is Expedition Everest! It was such a great time last year! Now to find a partner. Hmmm...

Congrats on your first medal of the year!

I really don't know how to tell you to choose which race to run as I can't do that myself (I plan on running both). I think the ToT race sounds AMAZING and I admit, I might be a little bit more excited for that one! However, the fact that the W&D is now in November is a HUGE plus, not to mention, I adore that race, soooo... yeah, I'm no help! I've ran both W&D half marathons and even though I know there have been a lot of complaints, I loved them both. I don't know if you can beat that after party, plus, running through three parks is pretty sweet. The ToT race sounds pretty amazing, too, as I love all things "spooky" and "scary", plus the 10-mile distance might be my favorite! Maybe just toss a coin and see which side it lands on... lol. I'm no help, sorry :bonk:

I wasn't as into running when they had the old ToT race, but when I found out about it (after it had already been run and there didn't seem to be another one in the works) I was SO disappointed! So, imagine my excitement when I saw this announced! The old race was a 13K - on one hand I wish they had kept that distance because I like the '13' part, but I really REALLY like the 10-mile distance, so I'm totally happy with that. Honestly, 13K isn't THAT far and Disney races are SO expensive so I feel like I get more bang for my buck when I have to run further.

And, on another note........ over Christmas I signed up for my first FULL MARATHON. :yikes: I have lost my mind! It's on March 18 in Virginia Beach, the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon. I'm SUPER pumped, but quite a bit nervous! Training is going well so far, so we'll see.....

13k is nice for the theme, but yeah, I agree that it's not really long enough to be too exciting. 15k maybe, but if you're going that far, may as well make it 10 miles, right?

Awesome! Good luck! :cross:

I keep toying with the idea of making the step up, but I inevitably balk at the time commitment. 22-milers just in training do not excite me at all. :bonk:

Excited and at least after the Wine and Dine, a bit entitled. :o I feel like by wearing our medals, people should get out of our way on the paths, and we ought to be allowed to cut the food line in front of non-runners. ;-) Hey, we earned our tickets! The rest of them just paid to get in. :-P

No kidding. I worked out a calendar of my training schedule and oh boy... it does NOT look exciting! However, I guess I just feel like I've done so many half marathons now (and I still have 3 coming up between now and my full marathon) that I need to challenge myself to something else. I guess I could have worked on cutting my time down, but honestly, the run isn't about the time for me. It's about the distance and the accomplishment of finishing. I am NOT a fast runner by any means so I guess it's just not important to me. I thought about a triathalon, but I don't have any interest in one of those. So, marathon it is!

I couldn't agree more! Although I inevitably get stuck in the lines because I am on the slower side and finish later.. haha. Maybe THAT should be my incentive to run faster? :-P

I'm headed down in a few week for the DL Never Land 5K with my wife and our friends. My wife is also doing the Tinkerbell 1/2. Def looking forward to the 5K since it will be my first night race! We all decided to dress up in custom so if you see a Peter Pan it might be me!! I was considering a lost boy but I wondered if anyone would get it - besides I already have a Peter Pan costume and lost boy costumes are hard to find (who really needs an adult sized skunk costume after all?). =)

Will I see anyone else there??

I just came back from WDW the other day and had a lot of fun during Marathon weekend. My wife and I ran in the 5K and a few of our friends in relatives did the full and half marathons. The 5K was really neat, especially being in Epcot as the sun was rising with all of the music and lights on - pretty awesome. My only complaint is that 5K is so short that several people didn't even bother to run and just walked the whole time so that they could get pictures with the characters along the way. I feel like they should make a separate lane for the walkers just because there were so many and it was really hard to run around them during the race.

There was also a special appearance from Tony Horton, the P90X guy, at the beginning of the half-marathon. As a P90Xer, I thought this was awesome.

I had a lot of fun though and am planning to do the Tower of Terror 10 miler in September. That one looks like a lot of fun too!

The 5ks at Disney aren't serious races. They are Family Fun Runs, for families of runners doing the longer distances. They are designed to be less serious, so that's why you ran into that situation.

I know that the race wasn't serious (nobody was timed), but there were folks lined up in the 7-9 and 9-11 minute mile pacing segments who had no intentions of running or jogging - it's kind of dangerous. It was my first organized race, so I didn't know what to expect.

Well, Disney 5ks aren't exactly "organized." ;-)

That said, I don't think the situation is really dangerous. There's no official time, and it's not too big a deal to pass people; it's only a 5k, so you're not going to significantly change your distance with the occasional zig-zag. Keep in mind that a lot of people use the run/walk method, so some might be running while other are walking, and vice versa, while still maintaining the same pace overall.

With all running, unless you're there to be the first one to finish, just keep a laid back attitude and appreciate the fun.

I'm really going to miss this 'cold' weather (for Florida). I ran a 14-miler this weekend when it was about 40-45 degrees and ran my fasted 13.1 ever and my 14 miles was only a couple of minutes slower than my fastest race timed half marathon! I have a half this coming Sunday and the highs are back in the 70s. While I LOVE 70s for an every day temperature, it's not great for running in. Oh well, I guess it could be worse and be in the teens. Just wanted to rant, haha.

Anyone got any exciting races coming up?? I have quite a few between now and the end of March, but nothing past that.. yet!

I've heard differing opinions, but supposedly the last month or so should be a taper.

It's a shame the weather isn't holding out! 60 would seem great for having to tackle a 22-miler, but then it had to go get all warm again.

Unrelated question: anyone ever tried running with a bone bruise on your shin? It's past the sort of dull achiness, but I'm still reluctant to test it.

I'm tapering the last 2 weeks or so. I actually have a half marathon two weeks beforehand.. plus a 15K and 5K that same weekend (the Beck's Light Challenge (http://www.tampabayrun.com/Race_Info/Michelob_Ultra__Beck_s_Light___Select_55_Challenge .htm) if anyone really cares ). Not entirely sure what I was thinking there, but it actually kind of fits in with my training schedule, so I just went for it.

I am so bummed about the weather. It was absolute perfection last weekend but seems to be steadily rising. I really do not want to be doing 18-, 20-, 24-mile training runs in 70+ degrees! Sigh. :pout:

I've never ran with a bruise on my shin but I can imagine it is a little uncomfortable. I occasionally get shin splints and those are SO annoying. I don't think a bruise should affect your running too much unless it gets painful, but that's just a guess. I say take it easy and see how it goes; your body will tell you if you're pushing too much.

Ooops. I fell off the wagon and haven't been able to get online here in quite some time! But my first half marathon is only a few days away. Eek! But I'm so excited for the Tinkerbell.

Thanks. So it's sounding like I should be able to use both but maybe I should try sending in a question and see if I get a response. My friend thinks she used her AP discount last year. I sure hope so. With the registration filling up so fast for the Disneyland Half I registered yesterday to be sure I got in which was a portion of money I had set aside for this trip. Any bit I can save I will try. Still gotta use all of my Christmas giftcards!

Does anyone get completely nervous before their race? Or maybe before your first one? I think a big part of how much I'm stressing out right now is that I haven't been able to train for a long while because I got sick this winter. I just really, really, really want to be able to cross the finish line and say I did it.

Getting nervous before your first race is completely normal since you really don't know what to expect! I guarantee you'll be able to finish, though, and you won't be the last one to cross the finish line! No one cares if you walk, run, or do both. If you get tired, walk. It's no big deal! Lots of people go into these races with no plans to run at all and walk the entire thing. No matter if you walk or run, you'll get to the finish line, I promise!

Belle Ella

Thanks. I keep telling myself that, and it's always nice to hear it from someone else. I met a lot of people at the 5K last year who said they walk the Halfs and yet it still doesn't seem to stop me from stressing out about it. Which is no fun because this is supposed to be fun. I'm sure once I get there and get going I'll be too wrapped up in what's going on. Hopefully once I hit the road and am on my way to Disneyland tomorrow I can relax a little bit. The anticipation is driving me batty!

Good luck with the tinkerbell one and the DL one. I did the DL one last year and doing it again, you get to run around Angel Stadium which is kind of cool. Its better to sign up now if you do want to do it anyway because it would only go up in price or fill up.

Got a PR at WDW half and my mom ran the goofy challenge. It was first time I went to WDW so that was pretty awesome. So I will be able to get Coast to Coast this year since last year I did not do one in WDW. I got a bag at least with the expensive DL registration that says Coast to Coast on it as well.

On another note I have a half on the 5th at Huntington Beach.

Um, YES! I get nervous before every race! Use the nervousness - your head knows you can finish; it's just an issue of realizing, "no, it's not that I can finish; I'm going to finish. Let's find out how." ;-)

For me, the nerves usually peak on the transportation to the starting line. There are hundreds of questions and scenarios in your head, and you just want that start to come, why is it taking so long, who are all these people, and Aaaah! http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d144/onecrowe/smiley_panic.gif

Focus on your breathing. Don't go out too hard. If you have some, try to let your music take over (yes, I run with an earbud in, and yes, just one - it's enough to keep me calm, and it also keeps one ear completely open for safety). You've got this. And you see these other people? One of them is going to be last. A third of them probably won't finish at all. Suckers. You're going to finish. Let's find out how.

Thanks everyone! It's good to know it's not just me who gets nervous. I leave for Disneyland today after work and then it's only 3 1/2 days until my very first half ever!

My wife and I signed up for the DLR 1/2 this year. It's my wifes second time running this event and my 3rd or 4th. Last year I ran with her the whole way through and didn't leave her side, but this year she's on her own. I'll try to go for time this time around. We'll see how the training goes this year for me to get a PR.

I did my first 16-miler yesterday and it went about as good as I could have hoped  The weather had actually cooled down yesterday so I could get the run in without dying in the 80-degree weather that has been taking over Tampa throughout most of January. Next up: I *hope* to get in a 19-miler on Sunday, but my husband and I are going to Universal Thursday - Saturday so I'm not sure how chipper I'm going to be feeling Sunday morning... Guess we'll see! I'm considering doing the run on Thursday morning before we leave, but I think that might be too close to the 16-miler I just did. Sigh.

Got home a little bit ago, but I did it! I finished my first 1/2 :) I had a lot of fun with the Tinkerbell and am really looking forward to the Disneyland 1/2 which I'll be more prepared for. I'm even thinking of signing up for another one closer to home before then.

There's a pretty good loop around the lagoon at Universal. Just saying. ;-) (It's probably too hilly for a good training run, though).

So im thinking I might run the disneyland half marathon. Ive never run any kind of race before though. I'm 17 play football and when I go out for a run I usually run like 1 mile jog another in like 25 min. Is there any training advise anybody could give me? Im kind of concerned about the pacing requirement :/

 Yeah, I don't think that'll happen. I am setting my sights on Sunday back at home.. I really hope I can squeeze it in and the weather cooperates. If it's too hot I'm going to have a really tough time getting all 19 miles in!

If you want to run a half marathon, you're going to have to build up more mileage (it sounds like you're doing about 2 miles split up right now?) You have time until the half marathon so just work on adding some mileage to your run every so often. You also don't have to run the entire thing; you can run, walk, jog, in any combination you want. I recommend looking into Jeff Galloway's method of running and walking - it's an easy way to maintain and conserve your energy while still tacking on miles. The pacing requirement for Disney runs is usually 16 minutes per mile - you should be able to meet that as long as you get some training in.

I don't have anything to compare the route to but it was good but I could have done without starting the whole thing off by going over the freeway. Starting off with the only hill had me cringing but I guess it's better than at the end.

I'm so in love with it. And I had a lot of fun wearing it around Disneyland and getting photos with it.

I started off the weekend just hoping that I would finish and not collapse or anything. I was pretty sure I could stay on pace the whole way through but I was starting in corral E, lol. Halfway through I started to realize I might be able to make it in under 3 hours and I did. My final time was 2:55:58 :) and that was with a restroom break. Depending on how well I'm doing preparing for the Disneyland 1/2 I might even stop for a character photo or two.

I'm thinking of signing up for the Diva Half Marathon in the bay area in May. Just trying to get someone to do it with me.

I second looking into Jeff Galloway's walk/run method. I started off giving the Couch to 5K program a try but it didn't really work for me but then I started with some of Galloway's stuff (there's even an App I got for my iPhone to help me train for my first 5K and I really liked it). And I started off not running at all. I did my first 5K last summer and just finished my first 1/2.

I save all of my bibs along with my medals and Disney definitely makes some of the best of both!! Congrats on finishing under 3 hours!! I knew I had to get that medal when I saw it in person at the Expo back in September. Had to, had to have it. Then again all the medals are so shiny that I want them all, lol. But there's something about this one. And I love that Tinkerbell spins. They had a mini one that was a pin at the Expo and I had to get that as well. At the end, when everyone standing on the sidelines cheering us on included people who had already finished and they had their medals around their necks that really gave me some motivation to get a strong finish in.

My dad is a cabinet maker and I'm going to see if he can make something special for my bib and medal.

You should definitely get something to display your medal and bib! You deserve to show them off :) I love that Disney has pins that go with their race events. I'm not actually a pin collector, but I always make sure to get the race pins. They look so nice on the medal ribbons :) If your dad ends up making you a display for your medal and bib, please share it! I love seeing how others display their collections. Speaking of, I should probably update my display - I recently ran out of room on my first medal display and really need to get another! I will be earning six medals between now and March 18th and definitely need somewhere to hang them!

I will be sure to share whenever I get around to it. They go through busy times and down times so as soon as their next downtime happens I'm asking. I'm thinking of maybe doing something like a shadow box and then put the pins I got in there as well. I got the mini medal and then there was the one that I ordered when I registered. I'm not really a big pin person either. I have tons left over from when I was a kid so I've been steadily trading them whenever I find a Snow White one or Thumper. But it's nice to have them to commemorate something big and half marathons definitely qualify! I don't know anybody in my immediate group of friends and what not who has done a half marathon or even a 5K.

But wow! 6 medals between now and March? Go you!!

My wife ran the Tinkerbell 1/2 too. It was her first 1/2 and now she's addicted. We ran the 5K with 3 other friends (we all dressed as Tink's, Peter's and Wendy) on Friday and it was a nice preview for her 1/2. We've done several 5K's at DL before and they have always been a blast.

My wife was hooked when she saw the theme was Neverland / Peter Pan and then when she saw the metal. It's stunning in person. Also, she purchased extra incentive at the Expo because they released an exclusive Dooney and Bourke Tinkerbell 1/2 marathon purse collection. She said she loves it almost as much as her real medal! haha.

I saw the Expedition Everest medal @ the Run Disney booth and now I want to do that one! The medal is super cool!!

The Expedition Everest medal is pretty awesome, especially since the race is only a 5K plus a scavenger hunt. It's as intricate and well-done as the half marathon medals, which are usually a lot nicer than the shorter race medals!!

That is so cool that there is a Dooney line for the Tinkerbell half! I haven't seen these at any other races - was this the first time they offered them?? I'm not a Dooney fan in general, but there's no denying that that print is beautiful, plus it will always remind you of the accomplishment! I probably would have been tempted by the purse as well :)

I loved it!! I wanted to do it before, but that medal was awesome. I'm such a sucker for a nice looking compass or map or the like.

She is def. a Disney Dooney fan (she has 3 others) but it was def. the incentive that made it more exciting than the others. They started the line (according to the cast members working the Expo sales floor) for the Tinkerbell DL 1/2. She said she hopes they make a new one for every year of the 1/2. She said as far as they were told this purse / collection was only to be sold at the Expo and anything that didn't sell would just be regaled to Disney storage. We will see if that stays true... haha.. knowing Disney and their ways. That said, it was a fabulous addition to her collection.

I'm another Disney Dooney lover. The Tinkerbell from the 1/2 was my 6th and I'm sure I'll be getting more down the line. It's a [horrible] obsession, lol. At least the first 4 were birthday/Christmas gifts. It's just funny to me because I have never been a purse person before - ever. This was definitely the first race-inspired one although I heard they did try to tie in the Princess design with the Princess 1/2 but it wasn't an event exclusive kind of thing. The was announced about a week before the Tinkerbell on the Disney Parks Blog and there was a lot of interest in it. I was at the Expo first thing and they had a separate line waiting for the Expo/merchandise area to open up. I decided to get my packet first and took my chances but still got one. It was on Twitter not too long after that they sold out. I hope they keep it as an event exclusive and don't sell any more, but I can see them releasing the design again without the Tinkerbell 1/2 medallion.

That's a great start! The running will come in no time. Remember, you don't need to run the whole time you're out. Mixing it up will make things a lot easier on you and your body. Maybe try running for 30 seconds every few minutes or so when you're out on your walk. Get started slowly and eventually you will be able to run longer. There's no rush to it, you know? I still don't fully run (without walking) anything longer than about 7 miles at a time - I always mix walking in there (and I've been running for a while now). It's just my style

Since the Dooney's came up I thought I'd share this from the Disney Parks Blog:

http://parksandresorts.wdpromedia.com/media/disneyparks/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/dnb445685SMALL.jpg

It appears as though the Princess 1/2 will be getting one as well. I'm guessing they are going to try and tie them in with the "women's" races. I kind of hope (although my bank account disagrees with me) that they do this each year with a new design but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. The blog post had a few more sneak peeks at other merchandise for the Princess: Preview of Disney's Princess Half Marathon Merchandise at Walt Disney World Resort (http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/02/preview-of-disneys-princess-half-marathon-merchandise-at-walt-disney-world-resort/).

Oooh the Tinkerbell 1/2 D&B print looks a LOT cuter IMO! The Princess one is nice but it's definitely not something I would buy. That would make sense that they would have them for the women's races - I'm guessing if that is the way they are determining which races to make them for, then we won't be seeing one for the Wine & Dine, which is fine with me and my bank account

The Princess race shirts are pretty cute. I'd probably pick one or two of them up if I was running the race! I also like the tiara but let's be honest.. what am I going to do with it?

Belle Ella

We'll just have to see. If they do start doing that for more of the events (like the Disneyland 1/2) I don't think I could stop myself. The Dooney's have become something I can't say no to. But they're a little easier on my wallet with my AP discount and a giftcard discount that I get through work. But who am I kidding, it's still a lot of money.

Another tiara would probably go right with the rest of mine. Sitting on Thumper and Miss Bunny's heads.

So we got rain again here which has me bummed. I'm still nowhere near wanting to run in the rain and I'm bummed because I was really looking forward to getting back out there after a week's break. I was so sore after the Tinkerbell but I think most of that had to do with not taking it easy the days following since I was still at Disneyland. I'm hoping the rain stays away today so I can feel like something other than a lazy slob!

Awesome. Purely awesome.

Also, that Princess 1/2 marathon bag now makes my wife want to run that race even more. She already wanted to run it but now she's more excited.

WDW races have way better merch than DL races. I was looking for a cool Peter Pan or Neverland themed tee since it was the Tink 1/2 and the Neverland 5K but nothing. Also, the tshirts have so much cooler designs. Way to go WDW. Maybe with DL gaining more races they will step up their merchandising.

Yeah I found the proof of time requirement a bit strange too! I've never ran an organized race that was longer than 5K before, but I have been pacing a 9:30 mile in training for the 10-miler. That would definitely keep me well under the 2 hour mark. Looks like I'll be in the back of the line!

It's not too big a deal, though, at least not that I've noticed. People have definitely jumped into the wrong starting corral before, and even starting from the back, it's not too hard to pass once you get out of the initial starting area.

Hehe yeah. I remember running outside of the cones for the first mile of the Family Fiesta 5K last month - I imagine I'll be doing the same again.

How do you folks usually prepare for the long runs? Is there a good schedule you go by? I was running about 3-4 times a week, but it's gotten really cold here in the mornings (20-30 degrees) so I've put off running for a little while until it warms up a bit. I've just started the Insanity program last week and it's really kicking my butt, but I'm slowly getting better at it. The goal is to just keep my cardio up so I can resume running again in a few more weeks.

I'm training for a marathon right now so the only time I can fit in long runs is on Saturday or Sunday morning. I try to run 3ish times during the week (with my schedule lately that doesn't always happen) for anywhere from 3-7 miles. On the weekends I have been alternating.. one weekend I do 12, the next 13, the next 10, the next 14, the next 13, the next 16, the next 13.. etc (honestly it's been helpful that I've had two half marathons since the start of the year as that forces me to get those 13-milers in .) Never up your distance by more than 10% of your furthest run or you'll be more prone to injuries. I find Jeff Galloway's schedule of training to be helpful in forming my own. I don't follow it to a T, but my schedule is heavily influenced by his suggestions.

We have the opposite problem here - it's getting too warm! Blah. Have you thought about going in the afternoons or evenings instead of the morning? The temperature might be a little warmer then.

I wish it was getting "too warm" here. It's still too cold for me but it's a moot point. I hurt my hip sometime after the Tinkerbell when I got home and running has been out of the question for the past month. It's frustrating, especially when I think I'm having a good day without any pain and then all of a sudden it creeps up. I just want to be able to run again!! May, and the 1/2 I'm doing in San Francisco, will be here before I know it and I am determined to actually be prepared for it. Then again with my trip to Disneyland next weekend that includes a job interview, who knows if I'll even be able to make it back to the Bay Area for it to begin with.

Ugh, sorry you hurt your hip, BE! That is a huge bummer. :pout: I hope it gets better soon and that you can get back to training. :cross:

Have any of you in FL (or anywhere I suppose!) done the Space Coast Marathon or Half Marathon? I was thinking of making that my next marathon assuming the one I'm doing in a month goes well. The scenery and bling are very tempting, plus, I've always been fascinated with the space program. :) The only problem is that I have a half marathon two weekends (Wine & Dine which I refuse to miss!) and one weekend (already signed up so I can't skip it) before... :look:

Oh, and I got one of my buddies into running with me and I found a race in April that takes place at Legoland. I've never been and probably won't go due to the ridiculous ticket prices so I thought this was a good way to go even if I am just running through it and don't get to hang out inside later.

Oooh what a great thread! I ran the Tinkerbell Half three weeks ago which was a blast.

I'll be at the Princess Half next weekend! I'm so excited but I have to admit I've been slacking training wise :( Then I got sick so I was out for over a week. Will I be seeing any of you there?

Do any of you wear costumes when you run? There were a lot of wings at the Tinkerbell Half but doesn't that create too much drag? j/k  I don't know how anyone does it but I have something for next weekend.

I had a sparkle skirt for the Tinkerbell, but that was it as far as costume for me. A friend of mine had a really awesome Peter Pan costume that she wore and she looked freaking adorable! I wish I could have pulled it off, lol. But were the wings driving you insane?! There was no escaping getting hit with them left and right.

I haven't done either, but I've considered the half. I hear the course is pretty flat, and I've also heard it's a good course for beginners and PRs.

If you do enter, I'll be sure to come cheer - it's only like twenty minutes from here, including lights and traffic.

I've been tempted to do that one so many times! If my training is finally back on track by then (which it should be after the Tower of Terror and Wine and Dine) I think this might be the year I do it!

My wife ran the Tinkerbell half in a fluffy green tutu. She ran the 5K in her wings but since she covered them in glitter she decided they were too heavy for the 1/2. I ran the 5K in my Peter Pan costume. A 5K is no big deal in a costume. My wife said she was glad she passed on the wings for the 1/2 since the tutu was enough. She couldn't wear her water belt with the tutu though! haha.

Here's a picture of my wife and I and our friends during the 5K with the Lost Boys (my dream come true character meet and greet - I've wanted to meet them for years!!). I'm the one hiding in the back in the Peter Pan costume. My wife is on the right in her tutu and wings. My friend and his fiance were Peter Pan and Tinkerbell (he was Tink she was Peter) and our other friend was Wendy.

I love the photo with the Lost Boys! If I had done the 5K that is one photo op I would have stopped for. It was a lot of fun during the 1/2 to see them on King Arthur's Carousel as we passed through Fantasyland.

A big reason why I decided to sign up for the 5K and the 1/2 for Disneyland over Labor Day Weekend is so I can dress up and have fun and actually stop for photos. I'd be afraid I wouldn't finish on time if I did that for the 1/2.

Cute pic, aspen_snow04! I'm totally jealous that the Lost Boys appear in DLR!

My wife said she was glad she passed on the wings for the 1/2 since the tutu was enough.

Though I've yet to do any costumed races, I can confirm from the first Wine and Dine two years ago that costumes can be a real drag in a half marathon. After Mile 10, we started seeing pieces of costumes littering the course and people throwing off accessories. I passed at least three Jedi Knights who loudly admitted that it was mistake to run in a cape.

That would be awesome if we both did it! I definitely have to see how my first marathon goes (less than 4 weeks away! :yikes:) before I consider another. I'm definitely down for a half anytime, though :)

I don't wear costumes because I get uncomfortable and feel gross (I love my dri-fit clothes ) but I think they are so much fun to look at! And I can second what Phylers said: towards the end of the race costumes were scattered everywhere!

It's actually a 10-miler, which makes me so happy :) It's probably my favorite distance for a race. Plus, there would have to be a Tower of Terror in CA for you to have this race there  Come down to Orlando! It'll be worth the trip ;-)

One of my favorite race weekends is this weekend... GASPARILLA!! (http://www.tampabayrun.com/) I just love this weekend. The races are so well put together, the courses are along the beautiful Tampa Bay waterfront, and the medals are awesome. This year I am challenging myself to the Beck's Light Challenge which is the 15K and 5K on Saturday and the Half Marathon on Sunday. I'm excited, nervous, and anxious.. but mostly just excited. This will be a real test for me to see how I'm going to hold up for my marathon in a little over two weeks :yikes: since it's 25.5 miles in two days. No, it's not the same as running 26.2 miles in one shot, but with no recovery time between races, it'll be a good enough measure I think. I'll be getting four medals this weekend (one for each of the three races plus a challenge medal) so I will try to remember to post a pic when it's all said and done! It's all about the bling, right?

Okay, Gasparilla challenge complete!  It went better and worse than I expected. So, Saturday, for anyone who lives in the Sunshine State can attest, was a TERRIBLE day for running. It was in the 80s, bright and sunny, and humid. So, the 15K and 5K I ran that day were pretty terrible times for me. Oh well - I made it through them and that is what counts! Sunday was looking like it was going to be another terrible day, but for other reasons (it was basically monsooning up until the start of the half marathon). However, about 15 minutes before the start, the rain, thunder, and lightning stopped, and we were able to race. It was insanely windy, which I didn't mind that much, and cloudy all morning. It must have been good weather for me because I PR'ed my half marathon that day. I was pretty shocked by that because I figured I wouldn't do so well being tired from running 20K the day before! I'm so glad I made it through and even though I'm a little sore today, I'd totally do it all over again. Up next: MARATHON!!

Here's the bling shot :)

L-R: 5K, 15K, half marathon, challenge medal.

Congrats on the Gasparilla challenge and signing up for the TOT 10-miler!

After a month and a half off because of my hip I went for my first run this afternoon after work. It was a quick 2.6 miles, but it felt good to be out there again. I'm a little sad right now, but the next 2 events I have signed up for I'm not 100% sure I can run anymore. I actually just decided to make a huge life change and I'm moving to SoCal and I got a job at Disneyland (on top of the company I already work for and am transferring with). I'm about 99.9% positive I'm going to end up missing the Diva 1/2 in San Francisco and I'm not sure how I'll be able to swing the Disneyland 1/2 and 5K over Labor Day weekend, but if I'm working nights at that point I might be able to make it work ... maybe.

I think they will give you a "discount" at Everest - i.e. cut out the active.com fees. That's what they did when I signed up at the Gasparilla expo. It doesn't save much, but it's a few bucks, at least. Although, come to think of it, Everest doesn't have much as far as an expo goes - I don't remember seeing runDisney there last year, but again, I wasn't looking for them (and it wouldn't make much sense for them to not be at their own event :bonk:).

I can't get pedicures anymore because of running :( If I get a pedicure, they sand down my calluses and it makes it extremely painful to go running the next time. :pout: Woe is me.

I always sand mine down.

After the massive blisters I got at last year's Wine and Dine, I started looking into it, given that I was wearing shoes I'd worn before, on a course I was semi-familiar with, and in good conditions, and the only variable that stood out was my decision not to work on my calluses. The hard, dead skin - particularly in warm ground conditions (which we had) - can become detached from the healthy skin underneath, resulting in ... massive blisters that run directly under your calluses and are too deep to be lanced on-course. When all was said and done, I would up losing both heel calluses entirely. It was both shocking how deep they ran and totally creepy to watch the back half of your foot slowly peel off.

Granted, I run in minimalist footwear and with minimalist form, but I figured I should be another voice and point out that in my experience, calluses = bad. :)

Phylers - Awe man... you didn't like running as me? haha

I haven't been on here in soooo long as I haven't been buying any vinyls as of late, but I thought I would check in and see what was happening. Some exciting news....
I just made reservations for Old Key West beginning on Sept 28th... you know what that means right???
TOWER OF TERROR TEN MILER!!!!!
I decided to run this one instead of the Wine & Dine because you only get so many opportunities to run an innaugural event. I'm so excited. I haven't registered for the race yet but fully intend to before the price increase at the end of the month.
Other than that news, all I can say is that I have been running quite a bit. Maybe too often (I seem to have trouble forcing myself to take off days sometimes) I ran a "St Patrick's day" 4 mile race last week with a friend of mine, and I am training for Capital City Classic Half Marathon in Columbus, OH on May 5th.
The other most exciting news I have is that I registered for a "Run for Your Lives" event in Indianapolis this summer... basically a 5k obstacle course combined with flag football... and ZOMBIES who are trying to take your flags. So excited for this one! If you haven't heard of it check out their website or search for videos on youtube. http://runforyourlives.com/ It looks like it will be a blast.

First off mshalloween... CONGRATS on the Marathon!!!!! Wow!!!!! I love the medal... much bling-ier than my St. Pat's 4 miler medal... but rightfully so.
I am super excited about T.o.T. and RFYL too. I sat at the computer and watched videos of RFYL for hours the day my friend discovered it.

OMG the videos are awesome!! I wanted to signed up to be a zombie so badly but my husband didn't want to spend all day there. Plus, I have a half marathon the next day (which is going to be interesting, to say the least) and will want to get home and get some rest. I can't wait to add a zombie medal to my collection :)

 It's a Yuengling medal! Congrats! And it was a good trip? Double congrats!:clap:

It's not zombie-related, but I found out about a 5k at a local minor league/Spring Training baseball stadium. Figures I won't need to take advantage of the buy-one, get-one on tickets for the ballgame later that day, but the 5k finishes with a sprint down the third base line for a home plate finish. :D

Yesssssss Yuengling was the marathon sponsor! I'll admit, it was one of the reasons I ultimately chose this race. We also got FOUR beers at the end instead of the usual one (but I think a marathon warrants four, no?)

That 5k sounds awesome! I actually almost ran a very similar one last fall at the Phillies spring training field in Clearwater but I think I had a prior commitment that I couldn't get out of. I'm pretty sure the finish was also down the third base line and over home plate. Now that's one you should look into since I know you love the Phillies! Are you going to run the 5k you mentioned?

Oh, on another baseball note, one of the half marathons I ran last year actually took us in and out of Tropicana Field. We entered somewhere in the outfield, ran around the ENTIRE field, and exited out near where we came. I thought that was pretty neat, even if I don't really care for that stadium! :)

I'd take four Yuenglings for just about any accomplishment. Walked to the corner? Four Yuenglings!

I would love to do the one in Clearwater. As it is, I figure I might as well do the one here, as the price is convenient. Plus, it's early enough to do the race and still be able to shower and change before the game in the afternoon. Granted, I don't have much need for a Washington Nationals shirt, but hey, it could be worse; it could be the Mets. ;-)

Running the Trop sounds pretty cool, although considering how bad the outfield grass looks on tv, I can't even imagine how sad it must look in person. They really ought to renovate that place.

I  the four Yuenglings as a reward for walking to the corner.. brilliant! I should adopt that attitude in my personal life.....

The one in Clearwater was last December, I believe, so I don't think it came with any baseball tickets :pout: But it did look like a lot of fun. I'll let you know if I see any postings about it this winter :)

Running in the Trop wasn't too bad. We ran on the warning track/dirt most, if not all, of the time, so we didn't have to deal with that awful "grass." It absolutely does need a renovation. The St. Pete Rock 'n' Roll Half expo was on the field and the "grass" was so disgusting--it was full of little rubber things that jumped up on your legs when you stepped on it and.. ugh, blah. It was nasty!

What's the point of burning tons of calories if we can't reward ourselves? ;-)

I've always wondered about that at the Trop! In the super slow motion, you sometimes see those rubber pellets fly up off the field. I know they're professionals, but that's got to annoy the team.

Every year I tell myself to make the WDW Marathon my first marathon, and every year my inner couch potato convinces me that 13 miles is plenty, dang it.

Seeing as you've made the jump, is the WDW Marathon on the far future horizon? ;-)

no marathons in my future...not at this point anyways! I did sign up for the TOT 10 today though.
Any run that has to do with a baseball park sounds like a winner to me. Do you get to slide into home?
Mshalloween - I can't believe you are doing the RFYL and then a half marathon the next day! You just might BE a zombie by the end of that weekend hahaha! Being a zombie for one of those events would be a trip. Maybe if it is as awesome as I think it will be, my buddy and I can sign up to be zombies for the Pittsburgh date in September.

It's not required, but it is allowed and encouraged. Cleats are also optional, but as the entire 5k isn't in the park or on the surrounding practice field(s) grass, I'm not sure why anyone would want to wear cleats.

I was actually thinking of doing the Goofy next year :look: Crazy? Probably.

You should totally make it your first marathon! It's one of the lesser-stressful marathons, in my opinion (not that I have a lot of marathon experience ) because there are so many people running. That seems backwards, but I look at it this way: at least you will never be last, you'll always have people running near you, and it'll be almost impossible for you to get swept up due to the fact that there are so many people who are very likely behind you!

But yeah, when I was running the marathon last weekend I told myself I was crazy and that I don't think I'd do it again. I let a day go by and I was already itching for another. I've definitely got the bug. WDW Marathon weekend just seems like the perfect time for my next one, plus I absolutely LOVED the Gasparilla challenge I did a few weeks ago, so I thought that the Goofy challenge seemed like the logical next step for me. Well, I don't know about LOGICAL, but you get the gist.

 Hooray for signing up to ToT!!! We should all have a VN.net meetup after the race since there are a few of us doing it! :)

I don't think I'll be too bad for the RFYL/half weekend. Just recently I did a 15k and 5k on Saturday and then a half on Sunday and actually PRed my half. I am thinking that RFYL might actually take more out of me than the 15k and 5k, though, since it's got obstacles and will use a lot of different muscles! Oh well. I signed up for the half at a race expo a few months ago, before I knew the weekend of RFYL. Such is life!

Even having never done a marathon, I'm totally tempted by the Goofy. It's like when standing at the edge of a cliff or other high point - I have to really fight that urge to jump, even knowing that it would likely end in disaster. That voice in my head that says "this is stupid; it will end badly," is often forced to really shout to drown out the one saying, "well, yeah ... but ... maybe it wouldn't! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-excited001.gif." :o It's kind of like, if I'm going to do one, may as well go for broke.

At this point of the year, there's plenty of time to train for the Goofy. The ToT and W&D will be awesome training runs for it, too. Not trying to convince myself here or anything.... Honestly, the only things making me hesitant are 1) the cost - it's outrageously priced - and 2) how freakin' early the races are. The Shamrock Marathon was absolutely amazing to me because it started at 8:30AM!!!! Disney will require me being up before 3AM on both days - something that just sounds miserable.

That would be fun. I would be game.

So for the coast to coast medal... can that be half marathons, or does it have to be a marathon? I am planning waaaay out, but I might attempt to do the coast to coast in 2013. I should have enough vacation club points to swing two shorter duration trips next year.

I would totally slide!
Cleats on pavement would be awful... it would be like Bambi when he discovered ice the first time! I thought about wearing cleats for the run for your lives event to help with traction in the mud... but then I thought back to my baseball days & I think cleats only help more mud adhere to your shoes... it might end up feeling as if you are running with ankle weights on.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the half and the full the same price, too (if they weren't last year, I know they were years prior)? I found that rather odd. The price is super high but I guess you're paying for the experience (and all Disney races prices are high!) That's one BIG thing deterring me from doing the Goofy in January.. it's probably going to be right around $400 with all the price increases and the active.com fees. :pout:

Soooo as brought to my attention by MsDisneyFan, there is a super fun race coming to Orlando (among many other cities, this is just the closest one to me :)): the Color Run 5K! Have any of you guys ever heard of it/participated? I think it looks like a blast and I am thinking about signing up for the one in Orlando in December. I have a couple of friends who have already expressed interest in doing it and I think it would be fun to put a team together for it (plus you get a discount on registration if you're on a team, haha!) It's a non-timed event and totally for fun which I think makes it a lot more accessible to a lot of people. :)

I'm pretty sure I am going to race that weekend... but right now I am struggling to decide between the half & the full. On the other hand I am really intrigued by the full marathon now... no thanks to you mshalloween hahahaha. Maybe I will wait to see how my first official half marathon goes on May 5th before I decide. I do know that i I ever do a full marathon I would love for the first one to be at Disney.

Awesome! You know, if you're trained for the marathon, you won't destroy yourself. Sure you'll be a bit sore and tired the next day or three, but I don't think it would destroy you. :) My thing with the full/half is that they are the same price, so why not go for the full!! I would definitely wait to see how your first half goes in May before you make a decision. I'm sure it will go great, though. A marathon is a whole new ball game from a half. I thought I was mentally prepared for 26 miles but man, I wish I had trained a bit more!!

Registration prices don't go up until the middle of June. Hopefully by then I will have decided which race I'm doing, and, well, if I'm participating in the marathon weekend at all. It's SO expensive.

I'm pondering running the Goofy Challenge. I "ran" no no... completed it in 2011 but that was with out training (I was dumb and determined to come home with those medals). But whenever I think about it I think... I like halves!

But seriously, I'm thinking of running Goofy but I'm unsure if I can commit to training this time around. Also, I was disappointed when I noticed it's the weekend right before the Tinker Bell Half Marathon :( I definitely want to run Tinker Bell. Is that enough time to recover and run another half?

Run.... probably not. Enjoyable walk/run/jog, I think so. It really depends on how sore you are and how well-trained you are. I'm sure you'd be able to finish, but it certainly wouldn't be a PR  I thought I was going to be a disaster after I ran my marathon last month but I seriously could have gone out running the next day (but I didn't .) I think if you don't go out and set any strict time goals for yourself for any of the races that you can make it work.

Thanks! Hmmmm... I was hoping to PR Goofy. However, that wouldn't be hard bc I took the full 16-min pace time to complete the full marathon! But I think I'll just run Tinkerbell and do the Princess Half Marathon again next year

By the way! I dressed up as Princess Leia but the slave costume this year, and I got a few compliments, but I don't think a lot of people got it! Oh well! I was so cold before the race though! (I was basically just wearing a sports bra, short shorts and a skirt over that) but this nice lady with her daughter gave me a long sleeve shirt to wear since she had an extra :) :) :)

I hope I can run the Wine & Dine next year since I can't this year :( It's too close to another vacation I'm planning. But I'm running She Runs LA, an 80s themed 10K on Saturday! I hope wearing yellow is neon enough to satisfy the theme!

Running both Tinkerbell and Princess is awesome! I'm so disappointed, the Princess is on the same weekend as the huge local race in Tampa (Gasparilla) next year and I already have my goals set for next year's Gasparilla to run their 4 race challenge. Sigh, maybe I'll finally get to do the Princess in 2014. :pout:

A Princess Leia costume sounds really cool!! I've been way too chicken to dress up for any Disney races yet... maybe this year for the Wine & Dine? Maybe I'll see you there in 2013 as I plan on running the W&D every year I can. I  that race!!

She Runs LA sounds like a blast! As a child of the 80s, I'm all about 80s themes! :) Neon yellow is 80s in my book.. maybe a side ponytail or some frizz to compliment?

I like the way the ribbon is attached to the medals this year and that they're using that Disney is doing that for all theirs medals now. Just something I noticed as I put my bling to the side

I finished my 10K this weekend in 1:08! I was happy with my time especially since I felt completed unmotivated during the race. It started at 10 which was late, and it started to heat up :( We got this cool Hurley/Nike bracelet for finishing though. My friend and I couldn't figure out how to wear it for the longest time!

I'm really happy they are switching up the way the ribbon is attached. I got a medal like that last year (not from Disney) and it hangs SO much better!! It doesn't flip around at all when you're wearing it and lays nice and flat. It's about time they switched!

Congrats on your 10K!! 1:08 is a great time, especially in the heat.

So my friend, who is running her FIRST 5K on May 6th, just signed up for the Goofy Challenge. :bonk: I'm really wondering how that's going to work out for her.. I'm hopeful but man oh man, I'm not sure I could get into that challenge without taking on at LEAST a half marathon and probably a full marathon individually first! I know she definitely won't be running a full first, but I'm trying to get her to do at least one half with me in the fall. She's doing ToT at least, but a half would be more helpful. Ahhh I'm nervous for her, haha! But now I want to sign up myself...

Sometimes I am the only one who posts here :look:  Just saw on Run Disney's FB page that the ToT 10-miler is 95% full. So, if you're thinking of registering, do it ASAP!!!

I also discovered some fun things:

The 5K before the ToT 10-miler has officially been named: Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run - should be interesting!!! The description says that the course runs on pavement, grass, and sand and goes through the WWOS complex. I love that it's a Halloween theme, though, and I'm wondering if the "Haunted" in the name means that there might be some scares along the course?
The 5K before the Wine & Dine Half Marathon has officially been named: Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5K and it will run through Animal Kingdom (I'm assuming the same course as last year's Halloween 5K). I'm excited that it will have a Christmas theme, yay for a Christmas medal!!!

Well tell her to train! Bc not training and running that darn Goofy was painful!!! I was walking slower than the old people at Universal the next day!

Oh and while I was walking very slow, I did talk to someone who had ran the Goofy while I was almost crawling back to my room. She appeared fine and said she ran 17 miles 2 days in a row and that helped a lot. Maybe it'll help your friend! Either way I wish her luck! It's just about finishing!

It's all good. I ended up taking the day off yesterday. Started training too hard out of the gate and did not sleep well last night. I desperately needed that day off. Going to pound out 3.5 today. I think I'll run past the finish line for Boston to see if they pulled up the graphics yet. Always a good time running down Boylston St :)

Well, worst comes to worse, I'm definitely signing up for the Wine and Dine (third years a charm right?) and I think the Space Coast Half (want that shuttle medal, omg) this year so my running calender will be full either way!

And yep, we are! We're doing villainesses this year. Vicki is bringing back Cruella from last year, Mom is doing the Evil Queen from Snow White and right now, I'm contemplating Shanzi from the Lion King to be different. This might change though since I haven't started the outfit yet XD This costuming thing is becoming too much fun.

Though speaking of which, once finals is over, I need to finish up the costumes for Everest. Look out for the Rescue Rangers next weekend!

I've had plantar fasciitis since March of last year. It got briefly better after a cortisone injection and then walking around Disney World in sandals for a week. After two weeks though the symptoms returned. I decided to just start running again since my podiatrist said that running wouldn't exacerbate the problem.

---------- Post added at 10:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:26 AM ----------

Forgot to mention that sometimes I hold off on a run due to my feet being too sore (like recently). My running shoes have $60 orthotics in them, but I swear my feet feel better in my Merrell sandals that have no orthotics  If only I could find running shoes that feel that way.

Yeah, the Space Coast all depends on if I go home to VA for Thanksgiving or not this year. Instead of running sneakers, have you thought about something like Vibram FiveFingers? They have minimal to no support and maybe that's what you need when you run. They aren't the most attractive things in the world, but you're going for comfort, not fashion here!

Merrell Barefoots (they're minimalists more than barefoot, but you get the point ;-)). They look like actual shoes, thus avoiding some people's aversion to toes, and they feature thin, durable soles with no rigid support to speak of (in the long run, it will strengthen the tendons in your feet and ankles, including your plantar fascia). :flex: I have a green pair that I wear around town or to the theme parks a lot, particularly when I'm not in the mood to be quizzed about my FiveFingers.

Actual barefoot is cool, but I'm too wary of the streets around here, so I too am a Vibram FiveFingers minimalist as opposed to a proper barefooter.

As far as starting slow, yes, you do need to work your way into them. It's less about literal speed and more about getting comfortable using and building up muscles that you likely haven't, especially for running. It sounds more of an ordeal than it actually is, though. :D

See? I didn't go into too much detail; thus, this isn't really a running post. :cross:

True! I guess running's a pretty personal thing and what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for the next and people can probably get pretty passionate about their methods. I guess I just like chatting about upcoming races and whatnot and unfortunately, no one here lives around me and runs a lot of the same races! Oh well, it's still fun to come here and chat about the Disney races :)

Goofy didn't fill up until December last year (I know this because I checked the edit history on the first post of this thread where I updated the % full every couple of weeks or so, and it wasn't full until the middle of December), but I remember it filling up a lot faster than that in years prior. I want to say they have about 7500 Goofy spots?

Has anyone run into a bug/gnat problem when running? How do you deal with it (other than going somewhere else to run)? There's a park right next to where I live that I like running at, but the bug problem has just gotten so bad lately! I don't know if it's the time of year or the time of day I run, but ugh, it makes me not even want to run :pout:

Ugh, I run into this almost every day in the summer after the summer showers hit (every day around 3PM here in FL). I don't know what to tell you to do about it aside from keep your mouth shut and wear sunglasses (or find somewhere else to run, but I'm in the same boat as you - the place where I run is where this happens.) My neighborhood is also filled with lakes so during the hot and humid summers there are always gnats when I'm running close to the water. :pout:

At least at running speeds you get to savor the flavor... when I eat them on a bike moving at 20 mph its down your throat before you know what happened LOL!

Been off here for quite awhile and have been doing a lot of catching up... there has been a lot of good coversation happening and I am going to have to do a better job of checking in more often! (BAD BAD ME!)
So, this Space Coast Marathon sounds cool... you had me at Space Shuttle Medal!!! What time of year is that one run?
http://i46.tinypic.com/dwquzd.jpg
Today I successfully completed my first half marathon. I ran with a friend of mine for the first 3 miles at his pace (he was running the quarter marathon) then I kicked it up a notch when I went out on my own. Ended up finishing in 2:01:34 and I am THRILLED, especially since I have been fighting a head and chest cold all week.
...by the way Jenn & Mshalloween, my shoes and shirt were neon yellow - does that mean I was running in 80's gear? LOL
...and for Phlyers, I saw one crazy girl running the half completely barefoot (of course she was wearing a hospital gown and was running away from the direction of the mental hospital hahahahahaha) There were a few people in five fingers, and a fairamount in Nike minimalist Free's (which I love my dayglo green pair) but I tend to wear those only when I am heading out for something more around the 10k distance or less.
I did get a few new pair of kicks last week as a treat for all my training I have done & the 20 lbs I have dropped since January. I'll post a pic soon.
Good to be back!

Congrats on your first half marathon, flyosu!!   What a great medal you got and what an awesome time!!! Just over two hours - awesome!!! Faster than any of my halves, haha! Also, congrats on the weight loss!! 20lbs is impressive!! It definitely makes you faster the more you lose, too. I've lost 30+ lbs since I started really getting into running last year and it's made a world of difference. I still have some lbs to take off but I've been lazy about it lately :look: I have my first race since my full marathon on March 18th coming up next Saturday (it's a 5-miler) so I am really hoping that helps me get my butt into gear. I'm not necessarily that prepared for it so I hope it's a wake up call too!!

To answer some of your questions:

The Space Coast marathon/half marathon is the weekend after Thanksgiving. I believe the 25th of Nov. this year? I can't do it :( but maybe one of these coming years. The medals are ridiculous.

Neon yellow = awesome running gear. 80s or not, I'm a fan of all things neon and obnoxious!!!

Thanks mshalloween. I know what you mean about getting lazy... If I didn't get lazy I wouldn't have had the 20 pounds to lose again! I still want to drop another 5-10, or at least work on changing what my remaining weight is composed of LOL (that seems to be getting harder as I get older though)
Good luck on your 5 miler. That sounds like a good distance to jump back into things. My next race I have going at the moment is Run for Your Lives in Indianapolis at the end of June. Getting ready to start some trail running with my buddy starting tomorrow. Also going to start some type of workout routine to get into better shape to tackle the obstacles. Still unsure about the half vs. the full marathon for Disney in January. Going to have to make up my mind soon!

Ughhhh so over the past few days I've really been thinking that it might be time for me to suck it up and get a treadmill for the house. The weather is outrageous at the time of day I'm used to running at (after work around 4PM) and I can't think of any other way to get runs in aside from completely altering my work schedule. :pout: I don't know if it's worth the investment for me as I don't really like treadmills and greatly prefer training outside, but I literally can't even run more than half a mile without feeling like dying as it's steadily been in the 90s around 4PM as of late. :pout:

If you have the time, it is much cheaper to join a gym just to use the treadmills. They break too often so unless you plan on paying $2000+, they cant stand up to much abuse. Sadly I know from first hand experience.

My new shoes arrived last week, but I have yet to run in them. I've worn them for walking around and they are amazingly comfortable. I have noticed a lot less foot pain when I'm wearing them too. Hooray for that!

I am really discouraged though. My sister in law started the couch to 5k program and only completed the first week. Then yesterday she RAN the last 3 miles of the broad street run with her brother. I am feeling absolutely miserable over this (I know I should be happy for her, but I'm so sad that I can't run the 3 miles and she did it after only week 1!)

I need to find a way to encourage myself to get back out there and keep trying, but it's so hard to motivate myself when I feel like this :pout:

Oh and mshalloween as far as getting a treadmill- you can always search for one in a second hand/thrift store depending on how soon you want it/need it. My brother is the assistant manager of a local thrift store around here and he had some really nice ones donated to the store in the past. It's definitely an alternative to shelling out thousands of dollars on it and that way you could see if you would want to commit to buying a new one.

Ugh, on the gym front, I really don't want to resort to that. I can't tell you how many gym memberships I've had in the past that never got their money's worth. The treadmill I found is about $600 but I have no idea how much abuse it can take. I don't have much experience with treadmill ownership. :pout:

That's so awesome your new shoes came in and that they are comfortable! I hope you get a chance to take them out running soon. :)

Don't be discouraged by your sister-in-law. We all have our own abilities when it comes to running and you can't compare yourself to another person. I actually just learned this lesson yesterday. My husband's friend's wife just started getting into running after she had a baby about 6 months ago and she is already running 5Ks in about 21 MINUTES. Those are sub 7-minute miles. :yikes: I cannot believe how fast she is and it was SO discouraging to me to read how fast she was running already. I can't run ONE mile in seven minutes, let alone multiple. Hell, if I can do a mile in under 10 minutes I'm happy. Remember that what your sister-in-law did isn't the norm; maybe she just has a really high athletic ability, maybe she just is a natural runner. I'm completely NOT a natural runner so I have to work harder at it, but I also think that makes it more rewarding. For someone who has little to no training to go out and run 3 miles, I just can't see it being THAT rewarding. For someone who has spent 8 weeks working on running 3 miles... SO rewarding, you know? Just remember to focus on your OWN accomplishments and don't let what others do get you psyched out. I'm one of the slowest runners I know.. I'm okay with it. :)

I feel like such a bad sister in law, but I guess I found it ultra discouraging because every time she finished one of the first week runs she would say "I could barely run the 45s increments" and then I found out she ran the full 3 miles?! Ugh. I just need to pick myself back up and get out there. I am letting too many things get me down lately so I feel like I could really benefit from the run.

Thanks for all the encouragement!

Don't feel discouraged. Like mshalloween said, we all have our own abilities. Just try to remember that one day you will be able to get out there and run 3 miles, too! One of my friends decided to run a half marathon without training for it or anything and finished it. If I tried to do a half marathon right now, they would have to wheel me off after mile 4 lol

At the end of the day, be proud of what you've been able to accomplish thus far :) It's unfair to you to knock down your accomplishments because of something someone else has done. Just keep your head up and keeping on running! (and eat a few bugs along the way )

That's a great name! I wish I had suggested it to my friends before they just picked something stupid and went with it. But, my husband and I are all signed up to run it, can't wait!

Next up.. I have to decide on the 4th of July run I'm doing. They have a 10K, 5K, and One Mile race... I definitely want to do at least the 10K, but they also have challenge where you can run all three. The times are really close together, though, and I'm not super fast, so I'm kinda wondering if it's a silly idea to do all of them or if I should just go for it because I love challenges..

MDF... like everyone else said, don't be discouraged about how others perform. You just need to get back out there and enjoy what you are doing, no matter what the speed. I look at other people's race results and am amazed at how fast people can run. I try not to let that discourage me. I just remind myself that I have only been doing this for a little while, and the only numbers that matter to me are MY times. As long as I am improving, I am happy!!!

Sooo, my latest crazy idea (thanks to reading this blog) is that I am 90% sure I am going to try the Goofy Challenge in 2013. My half marathon got me psyched... and I figure if I am making the trip for one race, why not do both and come home with 3 medals instead of one (That's the wholesale club approach to race running LOL) I just wish you could pay the registration fee in installments. I have several races I want to sign up for right now and it sucks up the "spare" the money faster than I can find it!

---------- Post added at 04:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:41 PM ----------

mshalloween I almost forgot about you!
Treadmill or not to treadmill... Afew years back I would run on the treadmill quite a bit. I wouldn't blink at spending 45 minutes to an hour running on it. Now, after spending the last 6 months running exclusively outdoors, the thought frightens me!!!! I guess I have become use to the ability to instantaneously change my pace. On the treadmill, when I want to speed up, or more importantly slow down there is quite a bit lag time between making the speed input, and waiting for the speed to adjust. Aside from that I enjoy seeing something other than a wall in front of me when I run. If you can keep yourself entertained while on the treadmill while still focusing on your workout goal then I say go for it. I can't imagine trying to train in Florida during the summer, I'm sweating just thinking about it.
If you decide to go with a treadmill, spend your money wisely. If you go too cheap, you will get what you paid for and will likely be disappointed in the long run. However, there are also bells and whistles that you don't really need to spend the extra money to have. One thing I would advise is to make sure there is a good variety of workout programs on the unit. I get very frustrated with units I have tried at gyms in the past because their programs aren't user friendly. I will ususally start out trying to run a program and then quit after 2 minutes because... well, they suck! My parents have a NordicTrac treadmill that i have always gotten along with. The programs were great, it was very easy to use, and it was built like a tank. It is over 10 years old and is still going strong. I found the following advice in Runner's World Magazine, it will help you in shopping for the right treadmill for you. Good luck!
Five things to look for in a treadmill.

1 SIZE IT UP While the overall footprint of the machine needs to fit in the space you have at home, paying more for an expansive treadmill deck may not be such a great investment. "Unless you're 6'6"," says FitAdvisor.com CEO Gregory Florez,"getting a deck larger than the standard 60" x 20" probably won't matter."

2 CHECK UNDER THE HOOD Unless your first name is Usain, you won't redline a treadmill's engine. That's why Florez recommends you pay attention to the motor's continuous duty rating, rather than its peak duty rating. "Runners need 2.5 to 3 horsepower continuous duty, but any more can be overkill."

3 TAKE IT FOR A SPIN Make sure the console controls are easy to reach and that the deck feels good underfoot by running on it for at least five minutes before you buy. It should feel steady and supportive and not too mushy. "Every deck is softer than the road," says Florez. "Too soft can cause injuries."

4 GET WHAT YOU NEED "Every machine these days has a variety of programs," says Lance Sapera, director of equipment standards for 24-Hour Fitness. He recommends people buy a machine that has a decent mix of hill and speed interval programs, which make it easy to get in a good run quickly.

5 READ THE WARRANTY Look for lifetime coverage of the frame, three years on all parts, and at least one year on labor. And since all machines will require some maintenance, be sure there is a certified technician in your area (you can find one on the manufacturer's Web site or on Treadmilldoctor.com)

flyosu, I literally ALMOST clicked through the registration for Goofy yesterday because I signed up for that $1.99 Active Advantage trial (where you get the fees waived for events registered through active.com, come to find out, the Disney races aren't included in that ) - it's just so dang expensive and a hard pill to swallow. My dad forwarded me an email he got a while back from his credit card company that offers a discount of $30 for the Goofy race, so it's $290 instead of $320, but that's a lot of money still... Oh, and I also want all three pins, so there's another $50 (but I suppose I can register for those later). So, I need to figure out what to do! I obviously want to register before the price increase in June, so I guess I will have to save my pennies until then. I hope you sign up - I think it's going to be a really amazing experience. I love how you got the marathon bug now that you've completed your first half marathon :)

Thank you so much for the treadmill tips!! I'm really space-deprived in my house and honestly the one BIG thing holding me back from getting one is the fact that I have no clue where I'd put it. I have seen ones that fold up somewhat, but the bulk of the treadmill is still there. I just truly have nowhere in the house that it would fit. :pout: So, it's probably off the table for now (plus, like you, after running outdoors for so long, the thought of running on a treadmill is not very exciting to me!) I guess I'll have to suck it up in the heat or change my work schedule so I can go out before work. I don't know which sounds worse. :pout: Stupid summer...

Flyosu...great write up. But one quick note, concerning the check under the hood. If you plan on doing any speed work, it is quite easy to fry these machines. My wife bought one not realizing it topped out at 10mph and I killed it wthin a week. I have had multiple treadmills start smoking on me at the gym. So just be aware that pushing any machine over 10mph (11.5mph for gym quality) will severely hurt the machine.

PS Don't buy a treadmill from Dick's sporting goods

I have the Disney Visa offer that gets me the discount as well... I know it's not much but just making it under $300 before fees helps me psychologically. I personally think you shouldn't have to pay the extra $20 for the Goofy Challenge to cover the shirt & medal... I say if you have the guts to complete both races you should just be given the medal at no extra cost. It's not like they aren't making money already.
Good luck trying to beat the heat.. it looks like I have a few cooler days here this week. I am heading to a local park to do some trail running through the forest as soon as my nike watch gets a charge... I actually have a long sleeve running shirt on today (my halloween 5k shirt to be specific)

I totally agree about the extra cost!!! I ran a local challenge here in Tampa in March and it was more expensive to run the challenge than it was each race individually. Sure I got an extra medal plus a really nice fleece (in addition to the tech shirts and medals I got for each individual race), but I really think it shouldn't cost extra for that. I only got one bib for the whole challenge instead of one bib for each race (like Disney does with Goofy).. so it's not like they had to print extras there or anything. Oh well, it is what it is. At least with the Disney Visa discount it's technically less than regular price for each race (without the discount). Sigh... I really need to sign up but I'm dragging my feet with it because of the cost.

I'm not sure how to beat the heat at this point. I'm really thinking about changing my work schedule. I just don't *want* to is the problem. Roar.

"Cardmembers must be at least 18 years of age and must have registered online and paid for entry into the 2013 Walt Disney WorldŽ Marathon, Half Marathon or Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge with their Disney's Visa Card by June 19, 2012"

I'm not sure how to beat the heat at this point. I'm really thinking about changing my work schedule. I just don't *want* to is the problem. Roar.

just don't let the heat make you stay inside and be lazy... that's always SO tempting!!!

That's what it says, but it's not true. You can register with any card; the discount is automatically applied. It's not a credit that shows up back on your card or anything.

I'm guilty of that too often :look: I think I'm going to adjust my work schedule and start running in the mornings next week to see how it goes.

Haven't dropped by much since I moved to Anaheim (or have I at all?) but I ran my second 1/2 this past weekend!! It was my first non-runDisney event and I was wondering if I'd enjoy them as much without the Disney atmosphere. Let's just say I shouldn't have worried about it. I even shaved 10 minutes off my previous time. Next up for me is the Disneyland Half (and hoping I have enough $$ to register for the Tinkerbell in 2013 again).

Congrats, Belle Ella! Shaving 10 minutes off is awesome!! Glad you had so much fun at your second half :)

Thank you :D I was super excited about it. Maybe next time I can finish in under 2:45:00 (this one was 2:48:12). I hadn't been training as much as I wanted to beforehand - I'm having trouble finding a good place to run where I'm living now.

Thought I would share a quote that was on a business card I picked up at the half marathon I ran a few weeks back...
"It's very hard to understand in the beginning that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants to quit."

That is so true! I am constantly at war with myself when running. Thank you for sharing :)

Saw this on Pinterest and again it's something that I need to keep reminding myself:

"Whether it is a 14 minute mile or a 7 minute mile- it is still a mile"

I love that. I had a few miles in there during my full marathon that were a bit over 14 minutes :look: but I still finished and that's what is most important!!!

Thanks :o I ran a 5-mile race this past weekend and I about died  (to be fair, it was pretty hot out!) I haven't done much training since the marathon.. it was a pretty big wake-up call! I need to get my butt back in shape :) I've actually spent some time today looking up local races that I want to sign up for.. I need to get motivated again!! Oh, and I need to find a money tree. This is an expensive hobby!

Oh, and I need to find a money tree. This is an expensive hobby!

Let me know if you have any luck finding one!! I'm starting to think I'll have to skip out on next year's Tinkerbell for that reason. Expensive hobby indeed!!

If I sign up for the races I want to that take place between now and next February, we're easily looking at $750+, not including the ones I have already signed up for!

:yikes:! And I thought $35 for a 5k was a lot of money

Definitely an expensive hobby! I'm probably not going to be able to afford anything more than the 2 offered here at Disneyland for the next couple of years. Thankfully I should start getting hours again at my second job so I'm crossing my fingers that I can make it work (or really that the Tinkerbell doesn't fill up too fast).

Confession time: I hadn't been running for about 4 weeks :look: Tonight, I finally got my sorry butt outside. I decided to drop couch to 5k and just run. I ended up surprising myself- I was able to run a full mile without stopping! Feeling quite proud. After that I mostly walked 2 miles.

I remember the first time I just ran a mile for the first time since high school. It felt pretty darn awesome, congrats!! I haven't really run a full mile at once since. I'd rather keep with the walking/running. But it makes you feel good to know you can.

I have barely run at all in the 2 months I've been in living in SoCal. Oops. Still managed the Half last weekend pretty well considering. I really need to get my bum in gear and go out tomorrow. I want to actually be prepared once the Disneyland Half rolls around. And considering my work schedule will probably be a zoo next month ... I need to get the motivation to run now!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you! Hope you can make the Tinkerbell work :) I need to make it out to DLR for that one year.

:yikes: Um, confession from me, too... since my marathon on March 18th, I've probably only been running 4 or 5 times :look: That's awesome you were able to run a full mile without stopping!!! Add a little teeny bit more every so often and you'll be working your way up to more in no time.

I hear ya... I did an 8.5 training run yesterday and it was about 80 degrees I think. It zapped my strength. I had a great pace and all but it seemed more like a half marathon effort rather than 8.5.
I have been mixing it up the last 2 weeks. Been integrating trail runs into the schedule (getting ready for "Run for your Lives" in 5 weeks) Today I got the bike down off the wall for the first time this Spring. Logged a 20 mile bike ride. It felt good to work some different muscles & exercise for over an hour without my knees taking a beating (of course I won't be able to sit tomorrow LOL).

...and if you find that money tree, please, please, please send me some seeds!

Me too! I am impatiently awaiting the statement closing date on my Disney Visa so that I will have another month to save up the funds to pay the bill... I have about a week to go, then I'm signing up (unless the Goofy hits more than 85% full, in which case I will sign up immediately regardless of which statement the charge will appear on!!!)

On the "what to do to occupy my time until the TOT 10 miler" front.... I signed up for another adventure type race yesterday. This one is called the Indian Mud Run in Coshocton, OH on July 14. It's a 5k over the river & thru the woods w/ 20 obstacles to go!
I went on a trail run yesterday on a local single track mountain bike trail that was recommended to me... I don't know how I didn't end up with poison ivy, thank heavens I didn't though!

I'm with you on the 85% front! If it hits that before the price increase, I'm signing up immediately. Until then, I'm waiting until the last possible minute.

That adventure run sounds fun! I haven't really gotten into any of those yet, although I'm doing the Run for your Lives zombie race in November. I did sign up for another half marathon last week, but that's not until December. :)

I totally watched that video thinking only about changes in elevation along the course. Though tempting, I just don't have that marathon desire yet. :o The finish line seems a bit underwhelming considering all the places you run through, though.

Also, since I missed out earlier, I'll add to the list of names who have fallen off the wagon as of late. I've got to set up an appointment for NordicTrack to come out and take a look at my treadmill, but even before that, I was having a hard time readjusting to a running schedule after the move. I kind of took it easy for a few 5ks, but I'm hoping the repaired treadmill and the prospect of the ToT 10-miler will get me going again. :flex:

Plus, I just bought a kit to convert an old bike to a stationary bike, so I'm thinking that will at least allow me to get in some aerobic work while the treadmill is down. :)

This sounds interesting to me. It sounds like a cheaper alternative to actually purchasing a stationary bike. Is this something I would be able to find in a box sports store? Or speciality bike shop?

I totally thought the same thing. I wish they could have added/subtracted out a few more fractions of a mile somewhere else to make the finish line in an "exciting" area, although I'm guessing they can't really have it ending in a park due to the logistics of it (race fee doesn't give you theme park entry type-of-thing).
