Some of the comments in my Collector's Showcase post inspired me to see what I can do with my point & shoot camera. My original shots were taken with my SLR (Canon7D) and I wanted to see if I could produce a similar picture with my point&shoot (Panasonic Lumix) and with my iPhone. Here are the results:

Canon:

Lumix:

iPhone:

Overall, the photos from the Lumix and iPhone are not too bad I think. Obviously a shallower depth of field can be achieved with the SLR which makes the photo 'pop' a bit more. The color reproduction is not as nice with the Lumix and the iPhone but they're still pretty good.

So I think even without an SLR pretty nice photos can still be achieved (even with an iPhone).

What do you guys think?

I think I might have to get my nicer camera out. I have only used my iPhone for pictures I have posted here so far. It is just so much more convenient than my DSLR or point and shoot cameras.

I prefer the SLR photos, but I don't have one :( I think for the stuff we're taking photos of on here (collections, mail days, etc.), phones and P&S work fine. I do enjoy looking at the SLR photos just a little bit more though :)

I agree...while the lumix and Iphone photos look pretty good, the Canon shot is distinctly better.

Totally agree... most of the time P&S or iPhone is sufficient - but sometimes its just fun to use the SLR!!

Most of the time I'm too lazy to even take out my point and shoot and just use my iphone. The convenience of the photobucket app for the iphone makes it really easy and no need to mess with cards or cables to upload.

My SLR's have been neglected :( I really gotta use them.

i use my iphone to all the time. I have a lumix, and that's good too...i usually play around with the ISO on my lumix FZ to achieve a nicer photo.

I want to upgrade to a d5100 though...

yeah the iphone is fantastic for that type of application. I wish the big camera manufacturers can start getting the their wireless transfer technology up to speed

I don't know much about Nikons but i've heard that the d5100 is a great camera.

i like the look of all the pictures, i have a Cannon but it is not an SLR, i love photography and should take more time out to learn more about my camera and how to use it to my advantage.
Thank you for the pictures :)

I have a DSLR, Lumix DMC-LX5W, and iPhone..

I must say ever since I bought my Lumix, my DSLR has been benched..

You could just combine the two...

If you can afford it definitely go with an SLR... The options and the way you can manipulate a photo are endless... With the help of an editing tool ie: photoshop and your creativity... Sky is the limit... Not saying you can't do that with point and shoot as well but let's just simplify what I mean (think of it in terms of a vehicle)

Phone cameras = Toyota/Honda
Point and shoot = BMW/Mercedes
SLR = Lamborghini/Ferrari

They all do the same job just different performances... Like most things you get what you pay for... but then again it's all up to the user... If you have a super expensive camera but you could care less about learning on how to properly use it then just stick with the basic (point and shoot) and just switch it to auto... Otherwise your just paying for options that younwont even use

Just my two cents

Oooh, well I recently stumbled upon a Compact System Camera (a Sony NEX-5N) so better than a point and shoot, but not quite SLR. I can't wait to take it to a park to play with it!

I have one question, was the iPhone picture HDR, cause im not going to lie, my iPhone pics with HDR rival my cannon power shot sx130IS, which is a top of the line point and shoot.

It's the lens (with good lighting) that makes the picture, not the camera :)

Just out of curiosity what iPhone was that taken with 4S, 4, or an older one?

Both go hand in hand . . . I would say the vision of the person behind the camera makes the picture . . . You can have all the most expensive camera and gear in the world but if you don't know how to use em properly then its useless . . .

That is very true. The pictures I take often come out better than the exact same ones my friends take and the all have DSLRs and I have a point shoot.
