Very nice ! How long did this take to complete?

Sledge
10-07-2009, 10:41 PM
Thanks guys.

It probably took 4-5 hours. Constantly having to wash my hands every five minutes definitely tacked on some extra time.

I have another one coming up tonight or tomorrow that should have some cool nostalgia for those that were Disney kids in the early 90s. :)

That's really cool! I love Stitch! Where can you get Disney comics? Or did you draw them yourself?

Nice Sledge! I know I've asked before but how is this done? Decoupauge, correct? Are you doing more than one layer of paper on the figure?

I don't want to speak for Sledge, but I'd recommend doing a base layer of images that don't really matter, but might be colorful; and then go over that layer with a layer of the images you'd like to be seen. That way, you won't have any white spaces peeking out. That's just my opinion though, take it for whatever it's worth. :)

That's exactly how it's done. If you remove the top layers of Stitch cutouts you can see just how ugly the bottom layer is. It's essentially just random pieces of paper with the colors I wanted, but by the time Stitch went on top everything was hidden and blended well.

Oh cool! I guess correctly! Props to me!

Hm, maybe I should try my hand at this type o' figure.

What's the purpose of the base layer? Do the outer images looked faded/washed out if you don't put down the base layer because the figure is white?

Probably not, but it helps to get complete coverage and allows to to be less-precise when you cut the top layer to place it on. You won't have to worry about cutting an image you want seen a certain way just so you can cover the white. Just think of it like those old collages you did in school. Same technique. I use to hate the kids who had white showing.

Sledge
10-13-2009, 03:28 PM
Exactly. You probably could do without the base layer if you were more selective with the shapes of the character cutouts you use. It is very hard to not leave any white showing without a base layer. The base layer give the impression of a character cutout being there, when really it is nothing more than a scrap piece.

The TaleSpin figure I did was a little different in this sense since the base layer was actually visible in a lot of spots and is supposed to be like a mini scene rather than something that is only there to fill the blank. When I did the "scenes" I used character cutouts on top of the "seams"/edges to make it blend a little bit better.

The colors on your figures seem so vivid and bright, is it the light you're using to take the picture? Is it the type of paper the comic was printed on? Like more of a magazine-quality versus a newspaper-quality sheet?

Sledge
10-13-2009, 07:05 PM
This particular figure had a really thick paper which was a pain to shape to the figure and get to lay flat. The colors on the paper were much brighter than the older comics I have. All the other figures I've done have been from comics from the late 80s so the paper was much thinner and delicate and the printing is a little bit more dull than Comic Stitch. When you get the decoupage medium on the paper it darkens the colors up a little bit.

wow that is awesome!! how exactly did you do that and where can I find disney comics? our comic book store doesn't carry disney ones

Sledge
12-21-2009, 09:03 PM
The style is called decoupage. You cut out pieces of paper and using a watered down glue you attach them to to surface. It's done similar to paper mache.

Well, I didn't necessarily want to, but I put the set of 4 comics up on eBay as a set. Since I DON'T necessarily want to part with them, I put them at a high price tag to see if any collectors much wealthier than I would be interested. With all the new VM releases and the increasing cost of running VinylNation, I could definitely use the extra money. We'll see what happens here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270599682039&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT
