D23 Expo: Disney Announces The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made!
Source:Silas Lesnick September 11, 2009
Roaring applause from Disney fans filled the Anaheim Convention Center Arena as the Muppets took the stage, performing a song and dance number live on-stage. At the conclusion of the performance, Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook officially announced that the upcoming Muppet film (written by Jason Segel) will be titled The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made.
This title references an old title, developed Jim Henson in 1985 but never produced that would have featured Gonzo directing a Hollywood film and quickly blowing the project's budget. Though unconfirmed, it is likely that this new film will mirror the same storyline.

I saw this mentioned in a recap but not much info on it. SO glad to see them finally make another Muppet movie, the title funny... I hope they keep with Henson's original vision.

Good news to be sure, but until the cameras start rolling, I'm not going to get excited. I don't want to see this spiral down into Development Hell.

New info :)
From geeksofdoom.com:
It’s no secret that Jim Henson’s Muppet army is raring up to make a big comeback. In March of ‘08 we found out that Forgetting Sarah Marshall duo Jason Segel and Nick Stoller would be writing a new Muppet movie for Disney.
After that, we also found out that a slew of other plans were in motion as well, including TV specials, merchandise, and music albums. In case you missed it, you can catch up on all Muppet plans here and now.
At the time, it sounded like Segel and Stoller would actually be handling the directing duties of the movie as well — we knew that they could pull it off after seeing their work with the Henson-made Dracula puppet and their song “Dracula’s Lament” — but that’s not the case. It’s being reported that James Bobin, who co-created the popular HBO series Flight of the Conchords and helped Sascha Baron Cohen to create his multiple personalities — including Ali G, Borat, and Bruno — has now been brought in to helm the next Muppet movie.
Disney chose Bobin over Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who recently brought us Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, while Bobin chose Muppets over the Judd Apatow-produced Bridesmaids. Along with his many mentioned co-creations above, Bobin also wrote and directed many episodes of both Conchords and Ali G. He was once attached to direct The Heartbreak Kid before the Farrelly brothers took it over…probably a smart move on his part.
The report mentions that the details of the movie’s plot are not being shared at the moment, which makes us wonder what we can actually expect. Since discovering Segel and Stoller’s involvement, we’ve heard of two possible plots. The first seemed most likely and would have Gonzo blowing the entire movie’s budget on the opening scene, leaving the group needing to cheap it out for the duration. This one sounded correct due to the fact that we were told that the title would be The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made. The other storyline rumored involved the Muppets fighting to keep an oil tycoon from destroying their local theater to get at the oil below. With neither the title or plot confirmed in the announcement of Bobin as director, who knows what might have been changed or altered or completely wiped clean.

This makes me nervous.....not a fan of any of SBC's alter-egos.
I find them to be pretty funny, but I can see why some wouldn't like them. :)

Not too crazy about the name change. That's very bold calling your script "The Greatest....Ever Made." I guess we shall see.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jason Segel has signed on to play the "human lead" in the new Muppets movie, an honor previously held by Michael Caine in 'The Muppet Christmas Carol.' Segel will also join David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films/TV as a producer on the film.
The currently untitled project will be directed by James Bobin ('Flight of the Conchords'), with Segel playing a man on a mission to find and reunite the Muppets. Segel also co-wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller ('Yes Man,' 'Get Him to the Greek') and is a self-proclaimed Muppets fanatic, as indicated by the end of 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall.'
Jason Segel is a regular player on the CBS comedy 'How I Met Your Mother.' His feature film credits include 'I Love You Man' and 'Knocked Up.' He recently joined the Cameron Diaz comedy 'Bad Teacher' and will provide a voice in Universal's animated film 'Despicable Me,' opening July 9. And if that wasn't enough, he'll also appear in the upcoming comedy 'Jeff Who Lives at Home' opposite 'Office' and 'Hangover' star Ed Helms.
