View Full Version : Flocked Vinyls- Martha Stewart meets vinylmation

I wanted to experiment and try to flock a vinyl. I picked up a bottle of Martha Stewart flocking powder and some glue. They didn't have the colors I wanted and I didn't have a blank 3" to do what I wanted so gears will have to do.

I also picked up some beads and will play around with those to see how they stick to the vinyl.
Here's what I have so far. I was hoping to find sort of like a clear flock so that his original colors would show thru but all they had were an assortment of colors and no clear.

Not sure what will happen or if the flock will stick but I will let everyone know how it goes.
Pray for gears
He may never be the same again

Here is part two of the experiment. The flocking is easy. Just some glue, roll it in the flock and let it dry. Depending on how thin or thick you want the flock, you can just add more glue after it dries and do a second coat of flock.

The glass microbeads is a bit trickier. I used a double sided tape called terrifically tacky tape, used a hair dryer on it for a few seconds and then just rolled it in the beads. For the smaller areas it would be better to use glue but the two that I brought with me were not that great. I need a glue that is just as tacky as the tape.

This guy will never be the same again. I don't think the body and head belong together anymore
Like I said, just an experiment with different products from Michaels. Not sure what to do with the hands or the rest of the body.

Update and finished product 10/13/10:

My poor little guy has suffered enough but he was a good sport. He looks terrible but my experiment is over and here are the findings.

The flock is really fun to use and I think the lighter it is applied the better. It's thicker on the ears than on the yellow part and truth is, the ears look like a carpet

I tried going over a spot on the back of the head because it didnt fill in well, and as you can see, it looks like a blob or a dent on his head.

The beads are easier to apply using the glossy accents instead of the tape. I used the same thing to give him the glossy hands and pink sides of the face, plus the nose.
All in all, he was a good sport and let me experiment with different products from Michaels. I had fun

Notice the spot on the back of the head where I tried applying flock on the spot where there was already a very light coat of it.

The products I used for my experiement:

I'm not overly fond of Martha Stewart in general, but she does make good stuff! The words Moss Man (or mouse in this case) come to mind.

Your experiment Vinyl will be a breakthrough in vinylmationology. It will be intersting to see how he turns out! Plus how much was the flocking?

Both the glass microbeads and the flock were $4.99 each :)

I got them at Michaels. If you have a local store, don't forget your coupons :)

I still have not found clear/white flock :(
I want to be able to use that over the vinyl without changing the color like I did with the ears.

I actually got this link for "flocking" from the Custom thread. I'm not sure where exactly I found it...I tried finding it again this evening but can't! lol I had it saved in my favorites on my laptop from when I found it before. Here's the link...hope it helps! They have white flocking but I didn't see anything clear.

Also, I love your custom so far! I can't wait to see it completely finished. You have great ideas trying out new materials from the craft store. I love shopping at Michael's for my craft supplies for Vinyls! (Gotta love those coupons too!) They have a great selection. I never thought of gluing beads to the Vinylmations...great idea! I love the way your yellow beads turned out on top of the gear.

Thanks for the link photomom
The problem I'm having is the colors of flock alter the color of the vinyl. There has to be something I can use that won't do that
I have to ask ROP to post close ups of his flocked vinyls so that I can have a better idea.
The flock is messy but fun to work with. The beads are terrible, those little suckers bounce everywhere

From Wiki:
Flocking is the process of depositing many small fiber particles (called flock)
onto a surface.

I really like the hands...did you only put that glossy stuff on them? They look really nice!

Great job. I think it came out well. I like the glossy accents you did on the hands and face. They really make the Vinyl pop. I like the lighter flocking better. The yellow on the front on the hand looks really good.

Looks like fun experimenting with everything.

It really was. I had a good time playing with different materials. Even more fun since I did it at work :look:

Yes and that was the easiest thing to do. Straight out of the bottle, a light coat and once it dries it's just really glossy.

I like the way this came out. It looks like a funky little tennis ball. I really like the shiny stuff. IMO that gear is better off with the flocking than just being plain.

I like it - the accents give him more character. The heavier flocking on the ears actually looks very cool; it adds some extra pizazz.

Admittedly, the more I look at it, the more I think it looks like he's off to a midnight screening of Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Or a really awesome costume party.

Very cool custom!

I actually think he came out really neat :) I love the different types of materials you used on him--I'll have to look into this flocking powder! I had no idea they sold that at Michaels. I love Martha Stewart's crafts too.

Nice work Qsk50! The gloss makes the difference and the ears remind me of topiary
