Duffy the Bear Annual Passholders Introduction

As you may or may not know, Duffy the Bear is coming to America! The background story is that the Japanese created a character that was for Mickey from Minnie...well here is the story actually from the tag on Duffy:


One day, Mickey was getting ready to set sail on a long sea voyage. Minnie made Mickey a special teddy bear to take with him so he would never be lonely.

Mickey love the bear and named him Duff. Mickey and Duffy sailed around the world. They visited all sorts of exciting places and made a lot of friends along the way.

Mickey and Duffy took pictures with their new pals and made memories that would last a lifetime.

At the end of their voyage, Mickey and Duffy sailed back home to share all of their magical memories with Minnie.

Where will you take Duffy?

They will be sold on October 14th (I believe it is either 14th or 15th) at Paradise Pier in DCA (I do not know the location in Epcot).

It is basically the same as build a bear, but knowing how it came from Tokyo Disney Sea it makes a lot more sense then just Disney capitalizing on a build-a-bear type toy

Also, in Japan they come with pants and undies! Where here he only has shirts :(

I really want the epcot hoodie! Actually, I want all the clothes for mine! :lol: I love the clothes from the different countries though. I am planning on making a little running outfit as a gift, but I'm not the best at sewing so we'll see how that turns out! Maybe I'll just get a sweatband and call it a day! :lol:

They said they will be selling his merchandise Treasures in Paradise, across from Ariel's Grotto and Duffy is overseeing the construction of his little photo meet and greet area, or something like that...

Oh and they confirmed the first vinylmation in a shape other than mickey will indeed be Duffy the bear, but no pictures. They said it will be coming Spring of next year

I really dislike how Disney is trying to push this so hard here in America. It's just a generic bear. He was kind of cool to me when I knew he was big in Japan because that's a completely different thing but I really hope that people don't buy this stuff just because Disney is selling it and then it takes over the parks and there is a random merchandise pushing bear everywhere in Disney World. I think that would be so awful and sad.

Yes Return_of_Phos is correct. You buy the bear ($25) and the clothing is approximately $15 :shrug:.

Yes the first Duffy Store will be open in Epcot Center sometime in October. Most like we may see the first Duff vinyls by the end of this year.

After reading a few updates across the internet (Including today's Mouse Planet WDW update) I have some more Duffy info. Yes, he'll be the first new shape. I also read that he'll be Flocked. This lets me believe that we need to not worry about things.I'm making the assumption that since they are selling the bear with different outfits he could be wearing that they most likely are making Duffy vinylmation with just him being featured. They could have a Duffy wearing Mexican gear. Or Duffy wearing the Spaceship Earth employee outfit. That sorta thing. I do not think at this time we'll see Duffy's frame painted like Sully or Boo. lol

This is just my assumption but it seems most likely.

Duffy has "hidden" Mickey's on him...(if that helps LOL :lol:). His face is suppose to have one (the beige), both of his feet have one, and on his back side he has a "birthmark" that are all shaped like Mickey.

I completely agree just becuz its a winner their doesn't mean it will automatically be huge here! Disney tends to do this though trying to shove their "new ideas" down Disney Fans throats (i.e. Fairies). I think this is going to fall flat on its face, everyone is crazy for vinylmation right now lets focus on that first thanks!

He is excited to go to Mickey's Halloween party next month but he doesnt know what to dress up as :) he is also excited to go to WDW, Monaco, and Disneyland Paris next year! I'll take a vinyl too but he's easier to cuddle with. He is already part of the vinyl family though since he's already met Ronn! :rofl:

Technically they are not keeping with the "Mickey" figure as they are adding things such as necks, hats, and globes to the figure. To me this takes away from the vinyl. However this thread is about Duffy.

Well, For many years Walt Disney World used to hold a "Teddy Bear & Doll Weekend" similar to their many pin events and now vinylmation events. Not sure if this is still a yearly convention, but I am pretty sure that "Duffy" showed up or something like that many years ago at WDW. I don't think this convention was very popular and over time declined significantly to where they don't have it anymore (Could be wrong though?), but it looks like the bears are trying to come full circle again since they where so popular over in Japan. Vinyl's have been a huge hit over there and now over here, so Disney probably figures they will see what success they can have by bringing these bears back.

NOTE (Second Link): You can scroll down to the "At Epcot: Koto Bears" and you will actually see "Duffy" there, the name is right inside the description. It's probably about 2/3 of the way down or so, so you can see that "Duffy" isn't new to Disney World.

You can see, That some of the Teddy Bear dolls back then have a similar look and feel as Duffy has today, so I imagine if I did enough research I would find similar Teddy Bear dolls you could purchase during this weekend/convention. I will be passing on this though as others have said, I get enough of Build-A-Bear and Vermont Teddy Bear here in New England...

UPDATE: Yeppers, I have seen other posts on the other thread here in this forum, and have seen pictures of similar bears all the way back to 2000. Those where more Steif Bears though, more collectible I would say, where these look more like your typical Disney Plush...

I'm not sure if they have it out yet since I'm on the other coast but they previewed it at the AP thing they held for Duffy

We met Duffy (the big one), hugged him and got our "I hugged Duffy" stickers. We had autograph pages for him, but we realized, like other Disney bears, he can't sign. :cry:

We recovered from the autograph let down and walked right into the store and bought him and his traditional sailor outfit. I considered the baseball jersey and hat too but didn't pull the trigger on that one! Then we went across the way and had Duffy join us for lunch at Ariel's Grotto. :thumbsup:

I'm going to be in trouble when DCA finally gets more than 3 outfits or when we head to WDW in Feb. I'll make sure I have extra room for Duffy's outfits too!

Does anyone have a pic of the Epcot hoody??
