Just saw this post!

We're hearing reports of a fire at Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World this morning. The Magic Kingdom attraction was evacuated first, which was then followed by the rest of Frontierland. There are no details as to the extent of the problem or the cause of the fire.
Update 9/15/10 at 1:55 pm: The ride is reopened, but still no details on the cause of the fire.

UPDATE

Just after Noon Florida time (9am West coast) the DIS reported that there had been a fire at Walt Disney World's Splash Mountain, and that Frontierland was evacuated.

A Walt Disney World spokesperson confirmed that Splash Mountain had closed briefly Wednesday, but denied that there had been a fire, or that any portion of the Magic Kingdom had been evacuated.

Tampa Bay Online reports that Reedy Creek Fire Department responded to "reports of a burning smell in the electrical room," and that the ride was closed for about an hour as a precaution.

Update: I just spoke with Reedy Creek Fire Department Deputy Chief Richard LePere. He said that his department received a phone call reporting smoke in an electrical equipment room. They responded and found no smoke and no fire, but observed a "hot smell" from a electrical cabinet that contained some lighting dimmer switches. He said his department worked with Disney's engineering department to remove the cabinet from service, and the ride reopened without incident. He characterized this as a routine response.

They could use the water from Splash Mountain to put out the fire :look:

But really though, I hope no one got hurt!

That's crazy. I wonder what really happened. Sucks that they had to evacuate all of frontierland.

That sounds really scary. The people on the ride at that time must have been freaking out, especially if there was an odor of smoke or electrical fire. Glad to hear that it wasn't serious.

Aw man, I was going to make the joke about the water to put it out but someone already beat me to it. But I guess Brer Fox really did finally roast Brer Rabbit. That's scary stuff though all joking aside

I'm sorry, it just makes me laugh since I expect this kind of stuff from an older Splash Mountain (like Disneyland's) but it happens to the newer one!

Good news that it wasn't anything serious. I did see others making comments about using the water to put the fire out, so I guess I missed the boat on that one.

As everyone has already posted, at least no one was hurt. Even though it is scary, it just shows that Disney trains their employees to be aware of things and to act accordingly.

It wasn't a fire, it was just smoke from a shorted fuse...

so i was wondering what happened that night cause i was actually in magic kingdom at the time (if it happened sometime later at night but before the parade and on emh night). the ride closed down and all the water went away and i was like... i was hoping to ride it. thats one of the few rides i really really really like to go on :( but i went back later in the week and it was fine. frontier land did not close down that night though that splash mountin did. i went on btr around 11pm
