A new sample of this was shown at Trade City, picture courtesy of Sledge:

http://www.vinylnation.net/siteimages/tradecity/tradecityevent50.jpg

What a great improvement to the previous Orange Bird sample:

http://eventservices.disney.go.com/static/vinylmation/images/AP_Avatar_OrangeBird.jpg

It looks like the beak has been redone, and now one ear will feature the leaves while the other will have the "Think Orange Thoughts" speech bubble.

I'm not an Annual Passholder, and I don't know a whole lot about this obscure character (other than who he is and where he appeared), but I am very excited for this one.

Discuss.

EDIT: Info about the Orange Bird can be found here (http://floridaorangebird.tripod.com/home.html) and here. (http://www.omniluxe.net/wyw/stt.htm) Thanks to mshalloween.

I'm really excited for this little guy too. I love the updates that were made; the new version shown in Sledge's photo is way cooler than the original!! I really hope I'll be able to get one of these (I'm not an AP). I don't know much about this guy, either, but I just love the way he looks. Not to mention, I'm a Floridian, so I have to have him! :)

Anyone know when he'll be released?

Okay, I looked him up because I was curious. Check out this site: http://floridaorangebird.tripod.com/home.html

"From 1972 when Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened, through the mid 1980’s, there was a concession stand in Adventureland called the Sunshine Terrace, where guests could get a Citrus Swirl.

The stand still exists, but the animatronic Orange Bird that turned his head and flapped his wings is gone."

Also found this:

"In the late 1960s, Walt Disney Productions struck a deal with Florida Citrus Growers. An attraction would be sponsored by the Citrus Growers in Disney's Magic Kingdom theme park, and Disney would create an Orange Bird mascot to appear in a multitude of promotional items. Thus, the unique Orange Bird was born.

Visitors driving into Central Florida in the 1970s couldn't help but see countless billboards along the roads featuring the sunny, smiling Florida Orange Bird. It was part of an exciting build-up for a trip to Walt Disney World.

The Orange Bird appeared in countless television ads, magazines, newspapers, and Florida tourist souvenir shops. But there was only one place where one could *meet* the Florida Orange Bird. That was in the Magic Kingdom, in Adventureland's Sunshine Pavillion.

The Sunshine Pavillion featured the Florida Citrus Growers-sponsored show "The Enchanted Tiki Birds." More importantly, though, it featured the Sunshine Tree Terrace. Here visitors could sample the world-famous Citrus Swirls, and maybe be lucky enough to meet the Orange Bird himself.

The Sunshine Tree Terrace served a variety of ice cream goodness and popular sodas. Behind the counter "grew" a real plastic orange tree, extending its leaves to provide a leafy canopy over the area. It was covered in real plastic oranges and orange blossoms. And Guests who missed meeting the Orange Bird in the Adventureland courtyard, only needed to look into this Orange tree. Observant Guests could see him perched on one of the branches.

In 1981, Disney and the Growers signed a new contract, but by that time the Orange Bird had stopped making Adventureland appearances, and was no longer seen on television. By this time, he could only be seen in souvenir shops around the Sunshine State. In 1986, the contract ended and, unimaginable as it may seem, the Orange Bird was forever removed from the Sunshine Tree Terrace. Even worse, a refurbishment of the area in 2000 saw the removal of the orange tree, itself.

The good news...Disney still owns the rights to the Orange Bird! He's made a successful comeback in Japan, with a variety of merchandise. Hopefully, it's just a matter of time before he flies across the ocean and makes a big splash in Florida again."

Yes, I had my facts right!

I knew he appeared at the Sunshine Tree Terrace as a walk-around character. Very interesting how what appears to have been such a great character fell into obscurity.

When I went to WDW earlier this month, I swung by Sunshine Tree and noticed a nod to the Orange Bird- a small figure perched above the counter.

He is sooooooo cute! I'm sad he was gone out of WDW before I had a chance to see him. I was way too young in 1986 to remember such a thing! I don't know if I'd even been to WDW at that point.

It certainly is an improvement over the first view we had of it. I like it :)

Does anyone know what the actual State of Florida bird is? (without searching the web)
I ask this because I have heard some people say the Flamingo, and that's not it.
They are probably just use to seeing it everywhere were Lottery is sold

The state bird is the mocking bird, but there are petitions to get it changed every few years. I think the one that gained the most traction was to change it to the Florida Scrub Jay.

Oh, and I love the Orange Bird. That's a must-buy for me.

Someone asked and I didn't see it get answered but the tentative release month is December-January. I'm not sure if they expect to be sold out of Mr. Toad or will just have the 2 available at the same time. I thought since it just a couple of months away they are just wanting to get them out since Mr. Toad was sooooo delayed that the 2 releases just happened to almost run into each other. Either way I am excited as I love this one!!

I was wondering about that, too. I thought the initial idea was for one to transition into the other, but it seems like they'll overlap.

I'm also anxious to learn the edition size. Had Mr. Toad been out for a while, it would have given the VM team a better idea of the demand, but this close to the projected release, I've got to think they've already got the Orange Bird in production.

I wonder how the tin design will look for this. It would be cool if they could incorporate the Sunshine Tree Terrace on the tin. I think it would be very cool if they were to take the Dole Whip design we saw a while back and turned it into a Citrus Swirl jr to go with the Orange Bird.

as much as I like the idea of a cool tin for this the way the Mr. Toad tin has been done it leads me to believe that this style will be used at least for a little while on these AP releases.

I could be wrong though, but it seems like the lack of text indicating what's inside means this will be a more general design

Just because there is no text to say what is inside doesn't mean it can't be exclusive to a vinyl. The outside represents Toad Hall from Mr. Toad's Wild Ride attraction and when you look inside it has the wall paper with Mr. Toad's face in it. I can't see this being used for the Orange Bird since his area was Adventureland and the Sunshine Tree Terrace. That will have more of the tiki/tropical feel to it. Or be all about oranges.

I just got my tin so I'd only seen the pics online hadn't seen the inside before. Thats good news then!! I was afraid they were going to use the same design over and over, I thought the exterior represented the castle. Guess we'll see when the Orange Bird is released what they choose to do with the tin design!!

I'm a bit concerned that you are actually correct, in that it can also represent the castle. If you look at this picture, (http://wdwnt.smugmug.com/Walt-Disney-World/VinylmationShowcase/13542437_Cp3Z8#986898574_KGkz7-A-LB) the shield on the tin is orange as opposed to the purple shield on the Toad tin. This indicates that this is a tin for the Orange Bird. Perhaps it's just the inside of the tin that is different. :(

No one knows yet. It depends on the edition size. They could release more to WDW than DLR, make the numbers equal, or just release them all to WDW. And just out of curiosity, are you a WDW person or a DLR person? That would play greatly into whether you would be interested in this or not.

I didn't even know this guy was a walkaround character until earlier this year. Plus the start of the song for a few notes sounds very similar to another Disney song, I can't quite put my finger on which one though. The chorus is totally different its just the start of the song. When I think of what song it is I'll post it.

yeah sounds like it'll be at both parks! I just wonder when it'll make its way to DLR?

I don't think they want to deal with doing park exclusive AP vinyls!! but if you were going to do one this would be it... of course when I saw this one and Mr. Toad I wondered if the former would be at WDW and the latter at DLR. I know MR. Toad has cross appeal, but the WDW attraction was removed years ago!!

I love this ride and I'm always disappointed that they removed it at WDW... the fact that it wasn't a mirror version of the DLR version made it just different enough to enjoy both separately

WDW release is 11/6, so if it'll release at DLR, it would be either same day or within a few weeks. Again, this is the first AP vinyl that is more specific to one coast than the other, and there's a Silly Symphony Swings AP exclusive coming along after Orange Bird.

Let's not forget that Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was at the Magic Kingdom for a really long time, too. It was very popular, although it closed in 1998. Passholders are those most likely to have a connection to the character and ride.

The Orange Bird doesn't come out in DLR or WDW until Nov. 6th, which is this Saturday, not the Friday.

Thanks for the correction. I just noticed that today too. Thanks WDWgirl.

Isn't it going to be like Mr.Toad and only be sold at both D-Street's in California and Florida?

I don't remember seeing an announcement as to where it will be sold but I am just assuming that since Mr. Toad worked out so well at D-Street that they would keep it the same for the Orange Bird!

Orange bird looks cool... keeping with the bird theme, it's a lot less cheaper than that Trade City bird set, without going too cuckoo.

I was able to get my Orange Bird vinyl this morning (thanks Disneyaddict!!!) and figured I would share some pics and information.

Here are the pics:

http://i51.tinypic.com/xprm09.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/210m3y1.jpg

Also, to note, the outside is the same design as Mr. Toad's but the inside is really cool. I wish they had made the outside different as I feel this will cause some confusion between the releases if they are the same. It does state on the little gold shield on the side that it is "Annual Passholder #2", but if the Cast Members are not looking closely they could easily pull the wrong one for people.

Here is a pic of the side:

http://i56.tinypic.com/2i8eiv6.jpg

Also, there is nothing to indicate that it is a limited edition like Mr. Toad was, so my guess is that it is limited release??:shrug:

It is a super cute vinyl though and I love the artwork used inside the tin.

I didn't even know this little guy was out. I was at WDW last weekend and swore up and down that I wouldn't buy any vinylmations this trip, because I had just spent almost $50 on them a few weeks prior. But then I saw that this vinyl came out and had to jump on it.

The price tag on the bottom is $16.99 but of course this is an AP exclusive so everybody should be getting it for less thanks to the passholder discount (10% off with my FL Seasonal Pass).

I also ended up picking up the Osborne Lights vinyl because I LOVE that light display. I also caved and got a Park #5 figure which ended up being Great Movie Ride's Anubis (one of the ones I wanted from that set!).

I was talking to one of the CMs at Festival of the Masters and we were both geeking out over the Little Orange Bird figure. He heard me explaining the origin of the character to my friends and then we talked about all the cool figures on display at the festival for a bit.

They still had some today, so I picked one up. I like him. I wouldn't have minded if they would have stuck to the clear plastic wrapper like with Mr. Toad rather than the foil wrapper. But other than that it's a nice vinyl. Love the card and the tin, too.

The inventory seems to fluctuate pretty often there. I would imagine they're just selling out and getting more in on a regular basis. When my orange bird was purchased last week they said they didn't think they would be getting any more Mr Toads in stock. Who knows if they're right though.

I've decided I really want the orange bird vinyl so I got on ebay to see what was available. Long story short, I almost bought one for around $20 and then I noticed a difference. The one I almost bought didnt have a black hat on the bird, it had white ears with a leaf or something on it.

Why are there two different versions of the orange bird vinyl on ebay?
I'm fairly new to vinylmation so maybe ive missed something.
can anyone clarify for me???

The AP Orange Bird (the one without the mickey ears) was released around this time last year and is only available to Annual Passholder members

The one with the Mickey ears is a cast chaser and was only available via mystery trade boxes at the Florida Project event

Hi!

As a non-Florida, non-AP holder, I had to get mine off of Ebay, but I think it is worth it. He's a cute little guy! My friend can remember when the Orange Bird was used in Florida advertising, so the Orange Bird reminds me of my friend. This month I hope to get the Milk & OJ set, and I think Orange Bird would look cute next to the OJ. It is a good thing the secondary market is there, because I have to rely on it for my acquisitions. It's not extremely far beyond the release date, so the Ebay price I got was reasonable. But he would be worth it, even if he cost more. Currently I have him next to my Mary Poppins Penguin and they are keeping each other company. It's interesting the different combinations that work for displaying! Orange Bird is so cheerful and I'm glad they produced him this year. Have a great day!
